Watched "The Golden Compass" and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" today.
"The Golden Compass" was not so bad as I have feared - a nice entertainment for a rainy afternoon, if you don't start comparing it to the book.
From "Elizabeth" I expected much, much more. I liked the first movie a lot and was looking forward to the sequel, but now I have to say it was the most boring movie I've seen in a long time. Mr. B and I both fell asleep while watching it. Not even Cate Blanchett's brilliant performance could save it...

Finally watched "jumper" on the plane. Overall impression not that bad really. I'd put it around the same place as butterfly effect (first one). Not incredibly impressive, but there have definitely been a LOT worse movies made. It had some original stuff going on, cool gadgets and solid fight scenes.
Thoughts
Thoughts
- I would have liked it if they went a tad more sci fi with it and added some more explanation about how the jumping works. Since the ending suggests a probable sequel, hopefully we'll see more about it.
- The plot that they got going at the first about the jumpers teaming up and taking out Sam Jackson together kinda got aborted in favor of fight scenes and a cliché'd "rescue the girl" theme at the end.
- the second jumper turning evil was out of place. Kind of like anakin turning evil in the space of about 3 secons in Episode 3. Poor plot device to segway into the jumper v. jumper fight.
- Paladins were too mysterious and omnipresent. I mean, sure they're hooked up politically and are very dangerous, but there just wasn't enough backstory. The "nobody should have this power but god" thing just seemed too hammy to be a motivation for wiping the jumpers off the face of the planet.
- There could have been more rules to the jumping. Like only jumping someplace you've been before...and what happens if you materialize inside a wall etc.
- I really liked that there was a traceable wormhole thingie that the paladins could get through using a machine.
- The part where the bad guy gets thrown through the portal and the second jumper comes back through with the portal opener machine. They all think they're safe and then the whipcord comes flying out of the closing wormhole and snags the chick. Good move Sam Jackson!
- the epic jumper vs. jumper battle near the end was pretty darn cool even though the reasons for it were lame.
- nice but not over-the-top effects.

yeah...Christiansen is a fucking weiner, but he didn't fit the role too terribly. Definitely not as badly as he portrayed Anakin. Jesus christ that was bad.

I watched The Oxford Murders with Frodo Wood and some other actors whose names aren't familiar to me. It was pretty lame. It was funny to see Frodo act like he enjoyed making out with a girl. And there were some boobs, which never hurts. The plot, however, was terribly lame...

I liked it. It had a eerie, creepy quality to it. At least at first, the last half hour I sort of lost the plot.
The part where "old philospher dude" is talking about his friend who went insane was incredibly awesome. As a short story that would had been an awesome read. Mathematician examines crazy people and goes crazy himself. Finally deciding he needs a labotomy like his subjects to be able to understand them... well, that was just insane.
Then when they come and visit him lying there naked, with only one arm left, scribling nonsense... *shudder*

I made my friend watch the greatest film ever yesterday and she loved it. Yes!
This film being Wayne's World, of course.

Sarah pulled me out to see the Visitor, which was surprisingly enjoyable and quite touching. Not a single cliche moment, which made me glad considering the type of movie I thought it was originally. Good acting, enjoyable characters and excellent editing.
Also, there was quite a substansial political message, but it never got overpowering. You can watch this movie and enjoy it no matter where you're leaning on immigration issues and all.
Also, now I can force her to come with me to watch the new Indiana Jones movie

So I finally watched Live Free or Die Hard last night, definitely not up to par with the first or third of the series. The villain was just a super nerd with an emo "oh noes! the world has screwed me" reason for doing whathe did.
The chicks were hot though.

What are you talking about. Just like one and three, the bad guy used terrorism and fear as a ploy to get what he really wanted - A SHIT LOAD OF CASH. He didnt really care about Americas security, he just exploited it.
I liked the film, the truck vs fighter plane on the freeway may have been a bit over the top but generally the action was excellent. I especially enjoyed the bruce vs chick fight. Just awesome.

The villain was lame. I didn't say it wasn't good but it wasn't te bad ass flick that th first Die Hard was....nor was it as funny as Die Hard 3 with awesome action.
Decent movie, just not up to par with those two.

We saw Indiana Jones last night. Not as good as Raiders or Last Crusade but certainly better than any of the Mummy movies or National Treasure.

I thought it was actually funnier than 3....
the 2nd was the worse by far (but it wasnt that bad)
I loved the 4th and thought it was better then the 3rd even... (the 3rd was great but had a lame(ish) and ubrupt ending, kinda of rushed)
DieHard 4 had some great funnies(if you didnt watch the rated R version make sure you do next time xander)

The third had Sam jackson in it and by that rationality was the best 1.
Watched the new Indie move last. Was good very Indiana Jones but was clearly just paying homage to the others in the series like all comebacks (Rocky Balboa)
Also watched Iron Man and thought it was ok. I really like Downey JR but thought the film was average. I was forced to wait till after th credits and was rewarded with a minute long Samuel Jackson cameo setting it up for the sequel

Interesting on the new Indy film - I've heard six or seven people's thoughts now, and they've ranged between absolutely awful to incredably good, and pretty much every level in between...
Odd.

Saw "The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford" yesterday. It was pretty good although a slow builder. The slowness seemed to be a device to build the right atmosphere. It could still have done with moving a tad faster. It's another one of Pitt's films that make you chaffe at all the rubbish he makes when he's such a good actor. Casey Affleck seems better and less annoying than brother Ben too! Anyway, I knew nothing about the plot or history beforehand, other than Jesse James was an outlaw so it took me a while to get the context of the title. I recommend it for a quiet rainy Sunday afternoon.

New trailer for the latest Pacino/Deniro teamup Righteous Kill. I don't know whether to care about this because these two guys are capable of such quality or to be terrified it's a turd in the blender...almost ready to serve....

Pacino, Deniro, and...50 Cent? Really? From the plot summary, if this didn't have Pacino and Deniro, I would never watch it. Sounds like a fairly cliched plot. Those two might be enough to make it good though.
