Hehe, yeah, good man. I remember seeing him in Casino Royale and thinking "Hey, isnt that the guy from Green Butchers?" They had some cool stuff coming out of Denmark in the late nineties/early 2000s, with In China They Eat Dogs as well.

Not to mention that Mikkelsen is a good pick as a bad guy, though perhaps he gets typecasted a bit too much in these roles.

But who cares if you're likely to be connected to one of the biggest movie franchises and earn a fortune over the next decade.

Yep, he was at the top of my list for picks to replace. He's a spectacular actor, and a really cool guy (met him at TIFF once, and he shook my hand and thanked me for coming to the screening)....super humble.

Having said that, I'll wait for it to be available on telly. The second one was.... well, mediocre would be generous.

The main problem I had with the second movie was that they neglected the bromance between baker-guy and Newt. Experiencing the world through baker-guy's eyes and seeing him adjust to everything and falling in love with what's-her-sister was fun.

I feel so weird because your stance on this is pretty much the status quo of most viewers, but I think the second film is leaps and bounds better than the first and I actively enjoy it enough to rewatch it often. Is somehitng wrong with me? What am I missing?

I thought it was a total car crash. Unless you are a die-hard fan (like my wife) the plot was just terribly confusing and jangly (and unengaging). Half the time I was struggling to follow what was going on. Thet just seemed to assume that any average film goer is spending all their days knee deep in Harry Potter trivia. I have seen all the films, including the first incredible beasts, and I was exposed to all the books throygh my wife, but that still wasnt enough the make sense of this jarring mess.

I think you have the same problems I have when people made the wrong connections and assumptions off of the LotR movies, they were books I knew inside out and so every little thing I picked up and understood instinctively, I feel your, self confessed, potheadness leaves you in the same place with these movies, you dont need anything explained, you know the lore

Rowling's been mostly quite careful to avoid publicly saying anything obviously pointable to as hateful, but here is a massive twitter thread rebutting the essay she wrote defending herself back in June. She's also had a history of promoting very, very anti-trans people, some mentioned in that essay but also moments like this.

Huh? Sometimes I feel as if there is a whole parallel world of stuff, largely through social media channels that I don't engage with (Twitter, Facebook, instagram) where weird stuff happens. I thought JK Rowling was a nice lady who did a lot for charity and women's rights and such? How is she suddenly the bad girl? What did I miss? It is so hard to keep track of public outrage these days.
