So Tehol has recently broken leg and with said broken leg has had to move her belongings up the stairs and evacuate her home?

Tehol, have you acquired a weird foreign looking coin with the image of twins printed on it recently?

I am beginning to have serious questions as to my luck lately!

As to the moving of stuff from my basement, it wasn't pretty trust me! I'm now in a half cast that allows me to partial weight bear so I'm a bit more mobile, but it was still difficult. I basically dragged and pushed stuff while sitting to the foot of my basment stairs, then sat on the stairs with the stuff in my lap and went up a stair at a time. Some stuff I was able to carry up the stairs kind of hopping but it took forever. I've known this was a possibility for a few days though so I've been doing it slowly, and my dad was able to come help at one point although he's been busy sandbagging his house. There was alot of stuff I left in the basement because I just couldn't get it up the stairs. I also moved my animals to a boarding kennel a few days ago so they would be safe and out of the way.

@bwgan I am calm and collected now my dear, but trust me I had a moment of sobbing hysterics and a bit of felling sorry for myself! I got over it quickly though, as it wasn't helping me get things done! I may seem like super tehol, but I'm not! Clearly I've had a run of extremely bad luck lately, I'm really hoping this is the end of it and things will start to turn around.

@Dktorode The province did dynamite the ice, those pictures are after they had blasted it. Orignially it was just one giant mass of ice coming down the river.

Does the flood way have reservoirs along the way to cope with heavy flows?
And why weren't they ready for ice?

The floodway opens via a series of gates, it diverts the water along the way and does hold a tremendous amount. They had just finished expanding it to hold more water. There are also culverts ditches and gullies along the way but they are completely full and overflowing onto the highways and streets. The problem with the massive ice floes is that they were in danger of jamming the gates and completely flooding the city. So they had to dynamite the ice and break it up with machinery to let it pass through, but the temperatures were low so it kept freezing up again. Added to that we were getting water from the US plus rain of our own and snow storms. So there was all this water rising and backing up but they wouldn't open the gates. They opened the gates gradually but there were still jams, the ice was so massive and moving so fast that it was ripping out huge trees like they were matchsticks. There were even some some houses that were completely destroyed by the ice smashing into them. I have no idea why they didn't ever think of ice as being a problem, but they honestly had no plan for it. Some outlying communites of Manitoba are completely destroyed. The floodway only helps the city, but it backs water up for everyone out of town until things start flowing properly. The floodway has done some good, because without it the city would have 2.1 metres more water than we did for the worst flood in our history the crest would have been 9.1 metres. We would be completly underwater at this point without the floodway. Clearly though it's still not good and our "flood experts" fucked up.

Excuse me young lady, but how were you 'getting water from the US'?

As far as I know, rivers flow south while you are in the northern hemisphere.

Wow.

I can understand the drainage gullies, but when you first mentioned the risk of a flood a month ago I checked the flood way and I surprised to find that it had no reservoirs.
Still a great idea though, the execution leaves to be desired.
Hope they fix the problem for next year.
Have they called in the the Army?

Well both the Mackenzie and St-Lawrence flow northwards, and so does the Red River. It flows into Lake Winnipeg.

Umm excuse me Obdi but the Redriver flows north from the US into Manitoba before emptying into Lake Winnipeg. All of the flood waters from North Dakota come our way!

Here's an article from three weeks ago describing how North Dakota flood waters were going to affect us

You're right DW their only plan was this floodway, they had nothing else in the works, they were relying on it completely. They were so sure of it that they kept saying we had nothing to worry about, don't panic, we would flood but not any more than usual. The execution leaves much to be desired! Everyday the flood experts were changing their stories and they weren't prepared at all!

Unfortunately they can't really say "Fuck! We screwed up! Sorry, we didn't mean it."
They're in a position where saying anything is bad.

Though now that I have more info, a reservoir or 4 may have helped but with the ice and no way to drain them a flood may have happened, though chances are maybe a few metres less.
The reservoirs would need to be able to drain, gradually to avoid spilling.

Though of course the fact that they bet everything on the same horse was rather stupid. Sod's law is a constant and they should have still put in place the traditional flood containment protocols as well.

I hope there haven't been too many casualties.

There have been surprisingly few casualities so far, it's part of the reason they want people to evac as quickly as possible. Believe it or not there are people who ignore the evacuation orders and stay in their homes. Several people have been stranded already thinking they were going to be okay. The water just comes up so quickly, one minute you're fine and the next there's nothing but water for miles around.

It doesn't surprise me that some people were silly enough to stay.
Good that not many people have been hurt.
Remember when we had a massive snowstorm here last year, dumping a good 150 cm of snow in one night, and some people still tried to drive. Abandoned their cars and sought out the nearest shelter. The cars were buried in the morning.
Granted not as bad as a flood (where the cars would be gone).

Well then my public schooling has failed me again.

Does northern go north and southern go south? Which way does the nile flow?

The Nile flows North... From some mountain range far down in Africa somewhere.

Is it sad that I had something like 3 classes about the nile river in my egyptology class and I can hardly remember a damn thing about the place? :D

Meh, a lot of comics can have one or two good strips but otherwise be crap.
And I think I've seen this one in the past and it wasn't that good.
