How to lose friends and alienate countries

Seemed appropriate for this thread.

There are a whole lotta pissed off Canadians from this (myself included). It's particularly bad as it came out just as the bodies of 4 more soldiers came home from Afghanistan. I realize this is Fox News but when you consider it's the most watched news station in the US....

What the hell is this program? Is it supposed to be satire? Fuuuucckk I am angry now. I think I'll go to sleep angry tonight :D

I don't want to take that seriously but it is just such a horrible trainwreck of ignorant idiots that you can't help but be angry.

@Ano - Yeah, that's pretty damn offensive. Fox News is a bunch of asshats, no secret there.

It may be the most watched news station, but please, do not confuse ratings with agreeing with what they say. Many times watching Fox News is like a car crash - you know it's awful but you can't look away.

Also, this whole thing is getting ridiculous. Somebody lock this thread so we can go back to be friendly book geeks.....

It's supposed to be satire, but clearly they fail. I like how Rick Mercer (one of Canada's best known satirists) summed it up:

"If you're going to do satire, three of the most important rules are you have to tell the truth, you can't be a bully and don't be an asshole,” said Mr. Mercer, who hosts his own show on CBC. “Being a bully is not satire.”
And so the First denied their Mother,
in their fury, and so were cast out,
doomed children of Mother Dark.

Wow, I heard about this in the paper, just checked the clip.
No surprise really it's fox, they also support Coulter.
It's blatantly insulting, though being prepared for it I'm not surprised nor shocked.
Oh and Russia would invade.

Alrighty. I feel I need to chime in again as i was a part of the whole ruckus to begin with. Mezla, I think you're being a little over sensitive. You've referred to what I said about you as a "character assassination" and a "personal attack." Wow, I must have said something awful! No, wait a minute, I said I didn't find you to be polite. Go look at it again. That's all I said.

Now I'll give my reasons for saying such a hateful thing. It was in response to you implying that all americans are stupid, and then saying something about how this trip has reinforced your idea that middle class americans are somehow awful. Not a polite thing to say. Not horrible, not going to mak me cry, but it's not a polite thing to say.

This was on top of your thread about your roommates. I would never have said anything about it at all if I had not been ticked off about your comments because the whole thing is silly, but it is my opinion that you are not handling that situation in a polite manner. To me, the polite move there would have been to simply say no in the beginning, not to say yes with every intention of ditching them. I don't think this makes you an awful person, I don't think you've done anything most people haven't done in some form at some time, I just don't think that was polite. It's not good manners to accept an invitation you have no intention of fulfilling, which i found ironic since the subtitle of the thread was about how you need to learn bad manners. No need for the peanut gallery to tell me to get off my high horse, no horse here, I never would have mentioned it at al if it wasn't relevant to my impolite comment. I'm not slamming you for how you handled it, just think that if I was was in that situation and wanted to do the most polite thing, I would have gone a different route. vThat's all.

So there you go. No personal attacks, no character assassination. All I said was I don't think you're polite. This is based on the inpolite things you said about my country and the(perceived) trivial impoliteness of how you dealt with your roommates.

I have no grudge against you, I typically find your posts enjoyable, and am a little surprised at how this blew up.

So in other words, the whole thing was based on you guys reading things into my posts that weren't there. I did not imply that all Americans are stupid, I said that the movie industry can be stupid. And I didn't say that this whole trip has reinforced my idea that middle class Americans are somehow awful. Read my posts again, anything you think is implied is being put there by your own personal prejudice.

The middle class comment was a half formed thought as I was planning on making a thread about my whole trip when I left last week. Clearly I should have left it out or fully explained my point in that post, but I wasn't aware that forum members were waiting to pounce on every off-the-cuff remark I make. Naive, I know. I was essentially going to say that I have had a really good time, I really like your country, the people here are considerably more kindly to strangers than in my country, in some aspects the cultural integration is much higher, intellectually people are a lot more organised about making progress, yadda yadda yadda. The reinforced middle class stereotype I was alluding to was that they are relatively internationally more naive compared to Europeans and the culture of fear is quite astounding. By that I mean how the middle classes seem to be so mortally afraid of the poorer areas of the country (warning me I am going to get mugged or held up if I take the bus etc) where in fact, the poorer people are just as friendly and helpful, if not more. From what I see if has formed a social barrier that is holding the country back as a whole.

And I still see a personal attack. Just because it is the internet, shouldn't mean you can go off at the deep end without waiting to garner all of the facts. The "character assassination" post was meant as a joke in response to Obdi being funny. The whole thread had clearly lost its sense of humour by that point however.

Back to drinking.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

oh sorry, back to serious

Just want to say that I'm pretty sure Mac was referring to the Eastern front here, and not the actual western or southern front where Americans/Brits/French/Polish/Pendantic Bears were present. Also, how can you possibly expect anyone to overcome Polish Warbears.

Never get involved in a land war in Asia. Hitler failed to take heed of Vazzily.

Fair enough. However well intentioned they were, your comments came off a little hostile. Chalk it up to misunderstanding. I'm over it. We can all be friends again.

"Time counts and keeps countin', and we knows now finding the trick of what's been and lost ain't no easy ride. But that's our trek, we gotta' travel it. And there ain't nobody knows where it's gonna' lead. Still in all, every night we does the tell, so that we 'member who we was and where we came from... but most of all we 'members the man that finded us, him that came the salvage. And we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of them that are still out there. 'Cause we knows there come a night, when they sees the distant light, and they'll be comin' home."

But what they don't realize is that home is... Aptland.
