0. You can go without water for a day. 0-1-1-1-0, 1-0-1-0-1.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

So its not 5?
Here cuz I didnt see anyone else had posted:
Edit: No its just 5.
You and 1,2,3,4,5.
End of day 1 - everyone has 2 days left.
1, 3, 5, give their extra 1 day to you, 2, and 4, and head back.
in the middle of day 2, number 2 has 2.5 days left, he gives .5 to you and 4 and heads back on his 1.5.
End of day 2 and both you and 4 have 2.5. four gives you his extra .5 and heads back.
That leves you with 3 days of water and 3 days of travel to go.

You need the same amount of water, day or night.
Obdigore: You can do it with less people.

you start with 4 people each carrying 3 days worth.
travel for 1 day, 2 people give the other 2 a days worth each then head back. This leave you with 2 people each carrying 3 days.
Travel for another day, the second person then gives , you 1 days worth, which will take you up to 3 days and allow you to get through.
He then travels back with the days water he's got.
On this third day one of the people who came back should head back out into the desert with 3 days worth of water. and he will meet the person coming back, they then share the water evenly and theyll both have one days worth, and they can get back

You didn't send the last person home with enough water, despite the fact they are being met. Riddle states they can either accompany you or be sent back with enough water to get home.

They have enough water to get home once the person meets them and gives them more

The riddle stated 'they can be sent back with enough water to get home'

If it said 'they have to get out of the desert safely' your answer would work ;p

Well, then it's my fault. Baudin is right.

What I meant is that you are not allowed to let them die. And if they can share their water with you they can as well do that between each other.
Edited: for those people interested: There's a formula for the helpers needed:
3^(n-4)+3^(n-5)+...+3^(n-n)
where n is the amount of days you need to cross the desert.
