sweet. Probably want that turned off then if I'm trying to keep them firing at non-engaged enemy units while hiding behind the wall of spearmen.
Had my first 2 victories by starvation.
Wow, all games before this one I was 100% assault. Starvation is a way cheaper way to go for the piddly rebel castles.
I got the scots on the ropes too. They will soon find out their english "allies" aren't so much allies as they are conniving warmongering bastards.

well, some of our guys decided to back Napoleon. Mainly because he promised them a restoration of the polish state. Bastard. Anyway, we did some dirty work for him, like at Somosierra and Haiti. Cool thing, crushing independance movements underfoot to support your own movement of the same category. Hi irony.

I'm playing an Empire game, as the dutch, and Poland-Lith annihilated Austria, and fought Prussia to a standstill. Very interesting.

Didn't you interact with Prussia and/or Austria though? Or did all that happen completely independant of your play?
In Medieval 1, in every game I ever played, Poland just stuck to their 2 provinces and fortified with hordes of heir bodyguards, same as Denmark, when played by the AI. They didn't even strike anyone if I mauled their neighbours...
What is odd is that Russia and/or Sweden didn't ride tight into PLC backs.

So I am DLing M:TW2 right now. I think it has an expansion pack with it as well.
I haen't played a strategy game since TA and Starcraft, lets see how this goes. (Last night when I went to bed the torrent had 3years and 42 weeks left, this morning it had 6 hours. nice to find someone with a reasonable connection instead of the 24k dialup the other person was using.)
Are the controls pretty easy to get a handle of, or am I going to need to run through a tutorial section?

Point, drag and click to select, position and move your troops, mostly.
Clicking on the campaign map. Mouse wheel to zoom in and out, WASD for camera movement over the map.
Of the starting nations, France and Germany are good nations to start off with, as they start out with all arms reasonably represented, plenty of wealth and a few easy to take rebel cities. When playing as France, prepare for the Milanese, though.

Anyone play the lord of the rings mod for rome total war?
Best campaign I had so far is the silvan elves, having a whale of a time defending mirkwood from mordor.
My 2000 elves have conquered all of mirkwood and I@m planning on taking back lorien.
But you can play as the fellowship though.

This looks interesting, if it's actually finished... Can you play as Mordor, Harad or the Easterners?

The easiest starters to play as are by far England and Spain. Portugal are pussies and 3 forts with decent stacks in the right place can block every entrance to Iberia, since the AI rarely uses fleets. England it's the same but with the Scots, and longbowmen are beasts in the early game.
But you don't want easy since it's too easy anyway (even though it's awesome mowing down hordes of cavalry as England). HRE are fun because it's one of the more difficult of all the factions. Surrounded on all sides, very easy to get excommunicated (fuck the Papal States anyway) and cash flow can become an issue if you're at war with too many people. But Zwei-handers, Reiters and Teutonic Knights? Yes please.

Version 2.08c has all the factions. It also includes city maps for unique cities but considering how rome total war imagines cities don't expect amazing replicas. The city battles like helms deep, the model design is like a 5 year saw the two towers and rebuilt it with lego, maybe because the total war egines rely on buildings being square.
But the battles are something, each good warrior lost is a real loss, they feel irreplacable. Like the silvan elves their basic units take 2 turns to train, the elven scout cavalry which is some god of war I mean, 4 units of them (so 240 of them) can fight an army of mordor full up to around 3200 which includes trolls can do some major damage in one battle when used wisely, or if you do more like my model for taking on full stacks, hit them 4 of five times and then march my army in to wipe out the survivors in two seconds flat. The silvan elves campaign works solely on killing from a distance and ensuring your forces are not tied down on holding cities which is why I hate Dol Guldor. As in my current game it has tied up my main army (and read only full scale army apart from my cavalry force).
The mod is still being worked upon but the newest version is quite stable.

The expansion pack Chaos Rising is coming out next week (it is for Dawn of war2). Anyone going to buy that? We might be able to figure out some play together. Could be fun gathering a few malazanites to play with

So I lost an army as the Holy Roman Empire, but I killed 4 venician generals while doing it. Didn't Expect the counter-charge to my already engaged spearmen by general 3 and 4 and bodyguards. (that I didn't know existed)
But they sued for peace after they realized they had no more heirs. And the pope is all like 'crusade, lol', and the some-thing-or-other is all like 'Jihad on Bahgdad'. I'm like, w/e.
So what do I have to build to get some heavy infantry that can cut through spearmen, enemy spearmen seem to be my only problem right now.

In the original game best army units are generaly from the castles when fully upgraded. There are some exceptions like Scots can get armoured pikemen from cities. The milanese most of ther lineup is from the cities the last time I checked.
For medieval 2 the mnod I woul suggest would be The Long Road mod. More factions, more provinces on the map, bit more acurate in terms of what can be recruited.

Although I must say that the mega package offer of Empire, Medieval II and Rome* + expansions was decent.
I just noticed something. This month I spent almost half my salary on stupid shit like these games and an N7 hoody from Bioware. I guess it's bread and butter till the 1st...

Damn the elves are dangerous, my 2000 strong elven force and may I say these elves are the silvan branch of elves supposedly the weakest have been holding back the odd 20,000 - 40,000 orcs that mordor has sent my way. I have captured Lorien which had been under Mordor control and am about to fight off another invasion. You would think that Sauron would allow me to have mirkwood just to myself.
Unfortunately my success on the field hasn't been emulated by my allies Dale and Dwarves are just surviving against the Easterlings.
Rohan is fighting off Mordor and Isengard and thus are weakened.
Gondor has lost cair andros and osgiliath. But it looks like they are strong enough to have made mordor to go for weaker nations.
The Free people have preserved their territory but that it. The Noldor attacked the bloody dwarves, Idiotic AI the worst possible time to do it.

Question for TW players: If you make an alliance with a small provincial power (like an italian state, or in Empire, one of the german states) do they ever kick ass and take names like they do for me?
I've got a Dutch Empire game going, and my ally, Westphalia, has taken Alsace from the French, Bavaria and Wurtemburg from the Prussians, and still hasn't run out of gas.
