Don't know why they didn't do this instead of Empire, cause the 1700s just aren't interesting in comparison.

I'm just getting into Empire- and I have to say that it's extremely fun. I like it on par with Medieval I and II. Though there are some quirks that have plagued the game since the beginning.

You're very lucky then... supposing you fully updated you missed out on a pair (or maybe a trio) of truly atrocious patches that lobotomized the AI. If you haven't patched, unless you can't spare a gig and some of bandwidth.

that should be sick. That's the epoch Cossacks dealt with, and that game was immensse. Plus, with the completely broken down Germany, there should be a lot of fun options to choose from amongst German principalities..

hehe... oops. I think my brain was a little hungover and probably still drunk when I wrote that. I read something like "what total war game do you want them to make next". So don't get your hopes up. :) I do think its a much better idea than a rehash of rome or shogun, but they haven't said anything about a new game at all yet.

You are SOOO wrong (imho). Shogun 2 would be awesome, especially if they added naval invasions and Korea. The unitmix there was near perfect, and proved that very little unit variance isn't bad per sé.
Rome 2 I'd be a little bit more biased about, mostly because they'd have to fantasiasize Egypt again. China: Total War would be great, too, set in the Rot3K period.

CAVEMAN total war.

You could have rock throwing units
and stick whacking units

and towns upgrades would be

  • fire
  • Bigger cave

That would be SWEET

One: Naval invasions were not a common thing to japanese warfare, korea was the only one in the shogun-game timeframe, and neither was naval warfare.
Two: Somehow I don't think sega's marketing morons would let the designers get away with only a dozen units on the game roster, rather than "more than the last game (empire)" and that'd likely ruin it on both the gameplay and historical front.

Also: Little unit variance??? The differences were huge... it was like a 15-way rock-paper-scissors game.

One: I do not mean naval warfare, but strategic landings. Yes, they were highly uncommon, but let's pinch history in the butt for a bit of strategical variety :(
Two: yeah. Well, let them create slight variants of each unit, tied to provinces. Japan had plenty of regions/ clan provinces/ monasteries that were famous for their warriors/ horses/ equipment.

Three: I meant between factions. The roster itself was indeed very diverse and specialized, but apart from seeing more cavalry in Takeda armies, Uesugi packing more archers and Mori with more inkyo than the average army due to their faction's discount advantage, all the stats on every unit were equal amongst factions, iirc.

I just saw the best idea ever.

Quote

1. Buy 2 top-of-the-line computers
2. Buy 2 copies of Empire: Total War
3. Buy a copy of Original Risk (with soldiers, not arrows)
4. Play Risk
5. Replace every dice roll with an Empire: TW LAN battle.
6. ???
7. Have the most awesome week of your life

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Beats my idea of immigrant children with muskets on a giant world map...

But thats exactly what they did. Sure, the units looked the same, (which is actually historically accurate... more-than-less, anyway) but the stat differences from where they were recruited/what faction made them resulted in huge differences, the +2 for warrior monks for Mori (1 for province, 1 for Mori) made them able to slaughter an inexperienced monk unit from somewhere else with ease going head to head, and were that much better against the units they countered. And the exp. bonus for tokugawa's Ashigaru made them able to actually stand and fight since units got a +2 morale/exp instead of breaking and running like the ashis from every other army with the first volley of muskets or a unit a mile off on their flanks. Takeda cav could beat melee shock troops without being massacred doing it, satsuma no dachi were unstopable against yari troops, whereas regular no dachi would take heavy losses or even break first.

3D would be nice, but I don't think its worth SEGA's research division mandating that superwtfzorsAWESOMZ! ninja assassin monk no dachi (with a small filipino man on their shoulders holding a musket) from -this town- being on the roster, with every faction getting some variation of idiot-unit which will of necessity be the idiot-unit staple of their army.

All this ye' ol total war talk reminds me of these play-by-email wargames I used to do... ah memories.

Wasn't the faction bonus only economical, and the region bonus only stars? Otherwise, the Hojo with their discount for fortresses was off a bit sucky. Uesugi started out with the +1 cav region (next to the Takeda main fortress of Kai), and iirc the ashigaru region was one of the unaligned ones, albeit close to Nobunaga territory.
I could be completely wrong though...

As for the assassin monk no-dachi... the kensai, when released with Mongol Invasion, was stupidly strong and fits the bill. Also, he was three times the size of a regular sprite :( Was a must for bridge battles, too...

I think they have the whole total war collection. I know rome and Medieval 1 are only like 5-10 bucks now.

Yeah probably, but I'm too lazy and cheap to buy a game I already own. Plus it'll probably twig out my processor and I don't feel like tracking down ancient drivers for my video cards either.

that's the thing with steam. I dunno if its an emulator or what, but it runs old shit on new comps just fine.

Or do you mean your comp is too old for Steam?

Cos otherwise...c'mon...its like five bucks.

my video cards don't (properly) support the graphics for a good number of old games. Not sure why, but there's a LOT of neon green pixels all over. Works fine for some (System shock 2, earthsiege 2, starsiege, MW 2) but others its just wacked and a little scary (Cossacks, medieval 1, and to put the boot to your steam-emulator the 'updated' AvP from steam crashes and wigs out like a crack whore)

Plus I don't see shogun on the steam list.

about 30 turns into a rousing game with the spaniards of M:TW2

Crushing the everloving shit out of the moors at the moment I'm about to kick their heathen asses off the peninsula. Permanently.

Then on to the portugese...oh the pitiful portugese.

You think I'm your friend, and I've enjoyed the regular tributes, but all good things.....

16 days till Napz... I couldn't resist the feeling it may be good and bought it. Steam is bad for me - could have spent that money in a million better ways.
