Almost done. Forgive my tardiness but Fantassy's incineration took a while to think around :p Mine will be up tonight.

Partial incineration, thank you.

Some bits just have third-degree burns. Or possibly fourth.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Pretty nifty. I appreciate you not using the sonoluminescence thing again, as much as it is what the actual mantis shrimp achieves when it strikes with its claw (yes, they can create temperatures that match the surface of a star, why'd you think I picked them for my character?) it is a little overpowered. Everyone likes restraint. Obvious cough.

I chose to ignore the likelihood that his skeleton would have disintegrated too :p If I get through, I am banking on full rejuvenation (including lost limbs!) between rounds! Otherwise, he's a one armed walking scab......

Good show Illy!

Oh, the winner gets completely rejuvenated (or an MOT for mine) for the next fight, even if you die. No worries on that score.

And cheers, HIGH FIVES to whoever wins and whatnot.

High fives?! I say the loser has to give the winner alcohol if we ever end up at the same UK meetup!!

I've just been reading through all of the finished fights. I can't believe how difficult it is going to be to vote on most of them. I think I'm only clear which way I am voting on one so far!

I know it is frustrating waiting for others to finish once you have posted your own entries, but I don't think we should push people overly, what with RL commitments and wanting quality entries. When it comes to voting though, we should set a deadline for no more than a week after the last entry to stop it from stagnating.

Hi finished the Morgoth vs Me match. I must say that I preferred the last piece when I had it in my mind. Anyway I'm catching up.

aha, a worthy end indeed ;) .. Well done Bauchelain, I think this fight turned out great. Good luck :D

Hm, I guess I can slip in a couple of votes at this time, unless people find they prefer votes to be given when all the fights are done?

Well, fuck it

Tapper vs JA - This fight was brilliant, and very funny at times. I am curious as to how you will continue making your characters interesting, but I trust that you will find a way. When it comes to prose I'm having difficulties deciding. JA I think had parts that were very very good and some parts that were not so good, whereas Tapper was much more stable in the quality of his prose.

Humour was good on both accounts, though Tapper generally seems to share my sense of humour more than does JA. Something I'm sure can be argued to be both good and bad :o

As for the characters, JA falls behind because of the originality of Trouble compared to the Duke, who after all is a predeveloped character. I wouldn't say it is cheating, picking such a character, but to my mind it demands a lot of the writer making that character his own, and not just a copy. JA did that to an extent, and if he gets to continue in the DM I am sure he'll move even further in that direction. For this fight though, my vote goes to Tapper.

Alt vs Shin

There's nothing wrong with the prose of either of these contestants. The writing flows well and the overlapping is well done and does not cause uneccesary breaks in the story. I have however always been fond of Shin's writing, which I guess is a disadvantage for alt but there's little to be done about that. Tiss a subjective opinion after all.

When it comes to the characters themselves, I find them both excellent. There's no lack of great characters this time around either, and these two are both very interesting. I must say though that I find it hard to see how there can be further developments when it comes to Alt's character, at least compared to Shin's. I find myself much more intrigued by Shin's little boy (reminds me perhaps a little of John, which is my favourite self made character) which means I guess that Shin wins overall for me. So my vote goes to Shin.

I'll just continue my voting because I'm bored and sick and Grief doesn't like me.

Illy vs Mezla

I love the quality we've had so far, and you two have not dissapointed in any way. Your prose flows well and you're good at building on the post of the other.

Illy's character is pretty interesting, and very original in some ways. IT holds a lot of potential and opens for many interesting matches. Mezla's little boy is also awesome and I really enjoyed how he was used this fight. I find myself less interested in his development however. There's not much to his fighting but his sword, which can make writing against him somewhat dull I fear.

I actually think this is the hardest fight so far to decide on. I loved both characters, I loved the prose and the vicious, bloody violence portraied. In the end my vote ends up on Illy.

D'rek vs STD

I'm very impressed with STD and his choice to write in first person. I find this way of writing fiendishly hard myself and I can't help but be impressed. Charcter vise, D'rek has the more amusing character but apart from the humour aspect, I find STD's duo to be the more intriguing all told. At the same time, it's hard to come up with ways to fight someone like the sand lady. Punches for hours to tire her out is not the most interesting of matches and as such that becomes a challenge. Still, StD is my favourite here and my vote goes to him.

So, votes so far

JA vs Tapper (Tapper)
Shin vs Alt (Shin)
Illy vs Mezla (Illy)
D'rek vs STD (STD)

Actually my original plan called for soaking her in beer and lighting it on fire with lightning, but... yeah... it would taker a better writer than me to pull that off...

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Haha, that would have been awesome :p. I realise I've made my character quite difficult to fight against conventionally...kudos for finding a way to fend it off so well!
Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

fight 1 - illy.
fight 2 - JA
fight 3 - Morgoth
fight 4 - D'rek
fight 5 - shin

comments

fight 1 - was very impressed wiht the fight, i thought you were both relentless in the destruction of fantassay though :p and i especially like dthe nods toward eddings by mez, but i think out of the two illy just pipped it with a slightly more flowing prose and his characters depth (pun intended)

fight 2 - this was for me the toughest one, jas use of duke grates ever so slightly given that its not an original creation but i felt out of the two his writing was slightly more daring and just pipped tapper. both look strong going forward though so for me this was a real close one. i liked the way it ended though, it was so unexpected and downright hilarious.

fight 3 - i felt both players struggled after a strong start and at one point morgoth used the same description three times ina row :p but overall the writing flowed better in his sections, whereas bauchelin fell into a tell not show trap. Both characters seem to have promise, but of the two i felt that morgoth did better in conveying a strong driving force behind his character.

fight 4 - a much more diverse fight than any other and i appluad st's first person writing, i defo couldnt do that. but the story suffered slightly as a result as i found it lacked as much heart or drama as the pieces by drek. character wise both are developing well with a suitable conflict growing in each section. there was plenty of action in the writing and plenty of future promise for both characters.

fight 5 - alt did a great job here, building depth to both characters withhis writing, but i just felt shin had the edge toward the end and the cliffhanger ending was top notch. again a great development of character on both players parts and they worked well using what the other gave them.

Illy vs Mezla - Mezla
Morgoth vs Bauchelain the Evil - Morgoth
D'rek vs STD - STD
alt146 vs Shin - shinrei no Shintai

Reasoning:

Fight 1:
It was fun, it was thorough and it was mostly about Fantassy - I felt development for the Mantisshrimp lagged a bit as a result, although the minibar scene and the tennis thing were hilarious.
The character concepts are fun (although I do wonder at the growth options of both - Illy probably has a transformation or 2 up his sleeve, and the sword will probably become stronger for Mezla) and I thought that this particular match up was a hard one for either of them, as they're both ideal opponents for the typical fantasy champion murderer, but not so much for one another. Illy's Shrimpmech should do a bit better against other weird opponents, I think, like Shin or alt or Duke.
Writing wise, it was feisty and a pleasure to read, but I think Mezla showed a lot of improvement in her second submission over the first, and that decided my vote.

Fight 2: nothing but compliments for JA, it was a fun match!

Fight 3:
I think Morgoth employed a very distinct writing style in his first piece, and slightly less so in his second, I loved that. In contrast, Shade is here for the fighting only, it seemed, and is very liberal with his power all the way up to the fight, too. He is bad-ass, that's for certain, but a bit too unsubtle for my liking :p
Props to Bauchelain for the ending, I thought that was great and the matched symmetry in injuries was cool.Overall though, Ben Doran and Morgy as his writer carried the fight.

Fight 4:
The duel of the duo's.
I love Lippmer and Catherine, the combination is interesting in fights and gives a nice refreshing bounce of convo and mutual sniping. With STD, I miss this lightheartedness, but he clearly chooses a different style and one that reads well and is admirable in its quality. That said, I think Lippmer and Catherine are the best fleshed out and have the most potential. Love the reference to Anomander Rake in the first piece of D'rek.
However, what swung the vote for me here was STD's chosen perspective, although I do hope his fighter(s) will allow a more flashy fight next time.

Fight 5:
Two of the odd ones again. Shin's horror approach gives a very nice atmosphere to the fight - if he ever has a match up against Morgoth, I think it will spectacular in the feel that's going to be created. I love his fighter. Alt146s monster is a cool one, but he's balancing on the edge between a tad bit weird and possibly overpowered, based mostly on how fast that genecode can alter itself. I felt that all in all, Shin shaped the fight and alt adapted to it, turning it now and then but not enough to make Chanfar's actions memorable. I found this one the hardest to judge because I felt so biased in favour of Shin's character.

1Illy vs Mezla(Illy)
2Tapper vs JA(JA)
3D'rek vs STD(D'rek)
4Alt146 vs Shin(Shin)

1) I liked them both and they were both funny pieces although Illy became a bit more serious in the second part. While I think that he has exagerated a bit I think that the shrimp mantis robot is one of the best characters in the contest.
2)This match was also very funny and I liked both characters. However I loved JA's ending and , despite having never heard f Duke Nukem before, I liked his character just a tad more.
3)This was very hard because I had no idea who to vote but in the end D'rek's ref on Rake won me.
4) This was probably my favourite match. You both wrote excellent pieces ana had great original characters. However I incredibly liked Shin's description of how the boy would have killed the four men so I decided to vote him although I feel sorry for Alt146 especially since he was the only one who voted for my introduction.

P.S. I don't really think I'll fight another round.
