About as well as the people telling my wife today that she's wrong and a poor feminist for feeling the Doctor should remain a male?

Apprently having an opinon on this casting throws you one one side or the other with zero middle ground, and no subtlety to said opinions. It's either be completely on board, or you're awful apprently.

Even my more moderate opinion of "I'm fine with this, and I'm sure I'll get used to it...even if it's not what I wanted" puts me in the "you're awful" camp I guess.

Hey "wholigans" or are fans called "whovians"? (dunno). Anyway, check this out.

Damn, I still have two episodes to watch to wrap up Peter Capaldi's run. His final season has been really mediocre to be honest and those episodes have been stagnating in my DVR.

I love this! I absolutely do! And it's not just because a lot of crying manbabies are whining about PC and SJW and having meltdowns and whatnot and we can all have front row seats to it thanks to the Internet.

I love it!
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Side note: know at least five women who dropped the show previously due to bad writing now excited/thinking about watching again due to this news. So there's that.

Then you should tell those five women that the casting of a female Doctor should NOT be the deciding factor in returning to a show they stopped watching due to bad writing...the writers should be that factor. The fact that they are thinking about watching again becuase of the gender of the main cast member...feels disingeniuous. It would be better if they trusted Chibnall more than Moffat, and like Whittakker's existing body of work...not that she's female.

Again, I'm not saying I'm against this personally. I like the actress. I didn't want it to be a woman, but I'll get used to it I'm sure.

I'm MUCH more interested in what Chibnall is ready to bring to the table to be honest. He needs to pull it out of the fire that Moffat has let it languish in for like 4 seasons now.

Except that's not really how this works. I can see what you mean by disingenuous, but it's different. In a world where most lead TV actors are male, being excited for one of your favourite franchises casting a woman as the lead is not sexism, or disingenuous. Being *against* a woman being cast, is. (IF, of course, your objection is simply because it's a woman. If the woman is a poor actress, not right for the role, or straight-up just doesn't make sense (this is where James Bond and the Doctor are two characters who have a lot more plausible leeway on the who of the actor than, say, Jack Bauer, due to their constant reincarnation and use of different actors in the past).)

I'd also contend that most of them left because the writing was shit. I doubt they're going to stick around if the writing remains shit, just because there is now a female Doctor. But I suspect that they will give it some leeway to start while they find their stride, as with previous showrunners/writers. They can be excited because one of the longest running male-led-with-no-real-reason-for-it series in science fiction is getting a female lead, by itself, and call that a good decision, by itself, while still reserving the right to drop the show if the writing doesn't pick up. I mean, seriously, dude. XD

I should also clarify that none of my previous post was directed at your post. It was entirely about the whiny snowflake manchildren who can't take a perfectly justified in-universe reason for casting a woman as the actor. Hell, I actually *like* your reason for being a bit disappointed, I agree a non-violent male role model is in short supply. But hey, the Doctor regenerates all the time, I'm sure that will come back, and it's not like the other three seasons of New Who will go away just because a woman is now the Doctor. In the meantime, bathe in the tears of sexists and MRA's everywhere.

Well, those people are dicks. If they are in-person people you should probably cuss them out. But logically and eloquently. If they're on the internet, bear in mind that it's the internet, and a lot of feminists are used to being on the defensive about this stuff because MRA trolls and genuine racist/sexist/general bigots are still the "norm" in internet discussions. Said trolls have made a really solid campaign out of being obnoxious enough that they've got people "on the other side" defaulting to the shaming reaction, which sucks because it's giving said trolls everything they want. But hey, generally you don't get that here, at least?

On the other hand, there is ZERO in-universe justification for the Doctor remaining a male. None. Like I said earlier, I'm pretty sure he's referenced being a woman at some point in the past, implying it's happened before. But more than that, because the regeneration process is described so broadly, there is no reason this can't be the first time, either. So continuing to make him a man becomes increasingly hard to justify without it being "just because". Which is a terrible reason when he's the perfect character to do something like that with. So, again, while I like your take on him as a great non-violent male role model (and I agree there is definitely a gap in the market for more of those), he's a body-changing alien with the message that all life matters...pretty perfect for a progressive icon, no?

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

So ... is the new Doctor going to be a bit testy in every 4th episode, or at 1200-odd years of age is she well past that nonsense? Do Gallifreyans even have that? Especially with the whole wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey thing.

As if the Daleks needed any more reason to be terrified of her ... :)

Actually, thinking about it - is the Doctor simply a character and the flesh wrapping is unimportant? Or does it have an effect?
We've all seen the slight differences between male doctors, so what is a female Doctor going to add to the mix?

But please, for gawd's sake, let's have no more shitty scripts! Such a shame the best Doctor since Tom Baker was hamstrung by lousy writing far too often. ;)

Still bitter that they didn't go with Judi Dench.

You said they bailed because of the writing. I said that coming back because of a casting choice is the wrong reason to come back if the writing sent them packing. That's what's disingenuous in that statement to me. Ignoring all the socio-political stuff that might come associated with the casting, if you stop watching a show because of poor writing (in my case, it's TWD which I recently gave up on for that very reason), then coming back should be about the idea that some fresh writers are about to come on board. If the Walking Dead killed off Rick and replaced him with another actor or actress to lead the team..that would not bring me back as long as it was still the same writers room. That was my point. Chibnall is show running...but who knows if he's going to pen the eps himself or utilize the same writers who did it during Moffat's run. The latter of which would mean the writing won't change much.

That's not how you framed it, or how I read it. That's why I took issue with it. If the decision has more to do with than just writing, then that's a different thing, and fine by me.

They are FB friends of hers. I don't have them on my FB otherwise I'd already have torn a strip off them for it.

Just had a thought - anyone think that River Song's gonna show back up during Whittaker's run? It would certainly make for an interesting dynamic! Can you imagine the look on River's face when she realizes that she's with yet another incarnation of the Doctor?

They've done that reveal more than once though...and she's been bashing around the older Doctors now on Big Finish audios as well (and not letting on who she is or that she knows them)...so it would be kind of a lacklustre reveal. That said, I like River a lot, so I'd be fine if she showed back up with Whittaker...but I'd rather River just knows who the Doctor is.

And we need a Captain Jack with her.

I'm still rooting for a Captain Jack/River Song spin-off show.

That would be great. I would imagine that since BOTH have worked for Big Finish seperately (River Song Diaries and Doom Coalition; Jack for Torchwood) that would be the place to look for that, and I could see it happening quite easily and soon.

as much as i like River, i think her time with the Doctor is done, or at least it should be.

The only way you could bring River back now is to have 13 save her from the Library somehow.

After all, if she had met 13 prior to going to the library, she'd have known the Doctor has regenerated after 11, and so the big reveal of 12 in "Husbands" becomes moot.

They could do an episode where they're working together and she just never tells River that she's the Doctor.

I'm going to make more of an effort to watch it due to the female doctor. Loved Dr Who growing up but I stopped watching it a few episodes into the Tennant era because it was on at the wrong time of day and the family friendly slant bores me. Once I got the technology to record episodes I was too far removed to bother getting back into it and the John Barrowman matinée idol schtick pained me. I'm super happy they have a woman in it. It's an iconic role and why the fuck not? I do however find myself wishing they had cast an "ugly" woman though.

Bloody women, never happy!

New Doctor. New outfit!

I like this a lot. Gives me vibes of some of the Classic Doctors, the striped shirt is kinda of Four, the suspenders are Two and Eleven, the boots are Twelve. Also note the multiple earrings.

BBC America is running a "sneak peak" at the Christmas Special - Twice Upon A Time tonight. It's only four minutes long so it's probably just a glorified trailer, but it might be worth setting your DVRs for, just to check it out. Have fun, and smile.

Damn, I still haven't watched the final two episodes of Doctor Who from the most recent season. I gotta get on them before the Christmas special airs. This last season with Peter Capaldi as the Doctor just didn't resonate with me. I felt a lot of the episodes were weak and a slog to get through.

It was fun seeing the actor who played Walder Frey on GOT in the "sneak peek" that aired on BBC America. I'm guessing he is playing the first Doctor? Is that right? Any of you "whovians" know?
