I'm shocked at how poorly MT is doing. Since the topic is now spoiler free, I was considering leaving it in the inn, but the TTH section is probably best for it seeing as its a malazan book poll, and the polls sections is a cold deserted section of the forum.

Anyway my vote

The Lether-based books haven't really done much for me. TtH is a tough one; while about 20% of the book was totally kickass, the rest, though very well-written, just kinda meandered. I really want it in my top 5, but I can't justify it. Interestingly, my ranking of the first 6 books has undergone only one change between my first and second reads: specifically, the overtaking of GotM by HoC (which I thought was okay the first time, but found much improved on the second pass.)

1. Deadhouse Gates - 5 pts
2. Memories of Ice - 4 pts
3. The Bonehunters - 3 pts
4. House of Chains - 2 pts
5. Gardens of the Moon - 1 pt

For those curious:

6. Toll the Hounds - 0 pts
7. Midnight Tides - 0 pts
8. Reaper's Gale - 0 pts
9. Night of Knives - 0 pts

Cumulative totals (including Imperial Historian's votes):

1. Memories of Ice - 40 pts
2. Deadhouse Gates - 28 pts
3. Toll the Hounds - 16 pts
3. The Bonehunters - 16 pts
5. Gardens of the Moon - 11 pts

6. Reaper's Gale - 9 pts
6. Midnight Tides - 9 pts
8. House of Chains - 8 pts
9. Return of the Crimson Guard - 4 pts
10. Night of Knives - 1 pt
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I think some people may have some left over bitterness while reading Midnight Tides, I sure was fretting through most of it, "Damnit where is Fiddler! WHAT ABOUT PARAN! NO KRUPPE OR QUICK BEN DAMNIT!"

Thank god for Tehol or it would have been insufferable. I've been a fan of intrigue but it was an Erikson first to have economic intrigue. The Beddict's were great, I didn't care for the one who was walking in the woods all moody, or the guide lady that helped the merchants through the woods(I forget her title...), and Trull wasn't very fun. I liked Udinaas, despite me hating his crush. That is one of the characters in this book I never sympathized with, that Witch lady.

Sixty, I'll include yours but after this, ties are no longer allowed since nobody is doing the tie thing right.

Actually, you had it right when you assigned the values, but also you can only assign points for two(which means: 5,5,3,3,1). Don't worry, I kept your original, there are no more ties now, so you're the last, no big deal.

;)

I'd have to say DG, because it was great to be introduced to the rugged beauty of Seven Cities, the pure awesomeness of Coltaine and the 7th, and the storyline of one of my all-time favourite characters, Duiker!

Pencil me in.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

That's still not fair because most people only have the power of 15 points (5+4+3+2+1). But anyone who would try to use ties would have more sway over the total points (5+5+3+3+1=17 points). A fair way would be 4.5, 4.5, 2.5, 2.5, 1.

I know this isn't my topic, but I think everyone should only be able to contribute 15 points to the total.

Uh, guys, this is a tough one. This could take a while. Let's see...

Deadhouse Gates - 5
Gardens of the Moon - 4
Memories of Ice - 3
Midnight Tides - 2
House of Chains - 1

Took me half an hour to figure this out...

Reapers Gale - 5
Midnight Tides - 4
Memories of Ice - 3
Deadhouse Gates -2
The Bonehunters -1

I don't know if alterations are being made... so how the score would stand if things stood this way:

1. MOI - 50
2. DG - 37
3. TB - 21
4. RG - 21
5. MT - 18
6. TTH - 17
7. GotM - 11
8. HoC - 11
9. RotCG - 4
10. KoK - 1
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I've put together a spreadsheet to automatically calculate the totals, here:
http://chawks.brinkster.net/files/malazan votes.xls

I've corrected tying errors (I'm looking at you, Mentalist), though I left the original points-for-tying system (5,5,3,2,1, etc.) intact. Note that the values listed in the spreadsheet are rankings, not points. Points are calculated off of the rankings given. I'll try to keep it updated. You can play along at home, too, if you wish.

The totals as they stand currently:

1. Memories of Ice - 53 pts
2. Deadhouse Gates - 43 pts
3. Midnight Tides - 20 pts
3. Reaper's Gale - 20 pts
5. The Bonehunters - 18 pts
6. Toll the Hounds - 17 pts
7. Gardens of the Moon - 15 pts
8. House of Chains - 10 pts
9. Return of the Crimson Guard - 3 pts
10. Night of Knives - 1 pts
11. Blood Follows - 0 pts
11. The Healthy Dead - 0 pts
11. The Lees of Laughter's End - 0 pts

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.
