I reckon the Ho storyline amounted to little.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

I was little confused by the geography of this. Ryllandaras was a First Hero of the First Human Empire of Dessimbelackis, on what is now Seven Cities. Previous encounters with Ryllandaras have been on this continent. But now he's the ancient enemy of Li Heng and god of the Seti, which are now apparently on central Quon Tali?

It's been mentioned in the main series that Ryllandaras has changed from wolves to desert jackals (or was it the other way round?).

Well, seeing as how he is soletaken & d'ivers it is entirely possible that Desert Jackals stay in seven cities in d'ivers form while soletaken "Man Jackal/Man Wolf" went off on his own to Quon because there really isn't much "he" left at all. The d'ivers probably wanted him the hell away from them.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Has there ever been another D'ivers-Soletaken pair? Like Ryllandaras.

Has it not been confirmed that he was only one to use both disciplines (rather than graduating from one to the other)?

edit: Thinking about it, does it even make sense to be both?

Soletaken are people who turn into animals. D'ivers are people who turn into lots of animals.

So D'ivers + Soletaken = ....people who turn into lots of animals?

Yes, the full name of a d'ivers is d'ivers soletaken, like draconean soletaken, not just D'ivers. I believe that when Mael takes a talk with the Pack in Lether the Pack has assembled to one slithery thing and when the Guard crash its hidding place it becomes many.

Well, he doesn't talk to the Pack face-to-face (or faces). He talks to the entity in control - which doesn't tell us how many bodies the Pack is currently in.

I kind of like the Ryllandaras and Ho issues and storyline. We've spent a lot of time talking about Soletakens and D'ivers here on this forum and now we have more grist for the mills.

I like how Ho, Ahl and the other two brothers being D'ivers Soletaken subtly reminds us that super-strong and immortal humans are animals too.

The obviously connotation is that the "Man Jackal" is no longer a part of the whole and is a seperate spin-off of Ryllandaras. We have d'ivers Ryllandaras whose animal clones all work together towards a common goal, and then we have Man Jackal sole-taken of whom Ryllandaras (proper) no longer has any control and does his own thing. I would wonder if this Ryllandars isn't trapped in his soletaken form like Treach was before he ascended.

To me, the quoting of the poem showed that Ryllandaras wasn't as lost as Treach was. He had enough mental faculties to be aware of his surroundings and the unusual circumstances, but was completely insane and overcome with bloodlust.

I still think he got tossed into Serc and may pop up again later.

i believe this is the case with the manjackal, he's been running around on quon, slaughtering people and being worshipped by the seti for hundreds of years, its no wonder that he forgot he was once part of something bigger

We did indirectly find out that the Jade Giants buried in the Otataral mines are sentient. And that Blues may be the next character to try and fix their problems.

Yeah, we learnt more about the Jade Giants, we were re-introduced to the first Crimson Guardsmen we came across back in GotM (Blues and Fingers), we discovered a little bit more about the D'Ivers ritual. It allowed us to work out what the deal was with those three brothers in Li Heng, learnt a bit more about how the rents between warrens are made and we also got a new Wickan Elder (Su) back in the game.

I'm not buying Blues, or Fingers for that matter, as ones to go off after the Jade Giants. More than likely they'll stick with the other Avowed now that K'azz is back.

I wasn't buying Blues as a mage. From what I remember in GotM, he was portrayed as a blunt and simple swordsman.

And where do the Avowed go, now that they've left the Malazans alone? To save the Jade Giants, of course!

When Ho and Su find out that Blues is a mage too, he basically goes "Shhhhh... it's a secret. Be vewy vewy quiet about it."

also blues is regarded as the premier finesse swordsmen of the guard, hardly a blunt and simple swordsman

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Ryllandaras also the fellow in DG who turned into a bunch of rats? He killed Baudin, right?

Gryllen was the rats, I believe.

I laughed when she and the other mages landed smack bang in the midst of the battle and started yelling and bossing Nil and Nether around...and they called her nanna. Needless to say, I ROFLBANSHEED!

On the Jade Giants; what's this whole shindig about saving them? explain pl0x.
