So the chick Seguleh that is to be an opponent of Rhulad chickens out right? Thats her we see sneaking out of the city when Fid and company are sneaking in? Doesnt this seem strange? They duel their entire lives righ? They mention that Icarium is missing but not her...

I have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter at the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain...."

I thought they mentioned that Icarium and one other was missing. I might be wrong though. I was a little weirded out by this too. I thought it would have been way better and more realistic to just have the seg duel rhulad and die. Instead, for apparently no reason, we see her leaving the city in the MIDDLE of Karsa going to fight Rhulad. Why didn't she fight? I have no idea. It seemed to me like SE realized for some reason that he would rather keep her alive and didn't bother to explain why.. though I'm sure HE had a good reason, right? Right?!

Plenty of speculation on this is prior threads. The most likely reason is that Seguleh differ to their superiors. Karsa bestet her and that means she's going to let him face Rhulad, her tittle of Seguleh 11th? was already lost.

There's also the thing that she believed that Rhulad could not beat Karsa after fighting Karsa herself. So there was no interest in it for her.

Seguleh are still human despite the strictures of their society.
Maybe she was simply a pragmatist and not dumb enough to let honour and pride lead her to a pointless, unavoidable death.

The thing I found a little odd was how did she know about the tunnel at all. Seems rather implausible a complete stranger to the city/continent would know about it's secret exits, especially one that doesn't talk to strangers.
Maybe she wiled away her non training hours in the palace library and stumbled upon a book about city layout/secret exits? :p.

Maybe her only reason (per Erickson) for leaving through the tunnel was to clear a path for the Malazans

She went looking for a way out. Walked along the outer wall, found the exit... maybe shanked a couple of unlucky guard... then left. Not really that improbable.

I just read this part, and Fid went in first and he found three bodies with their heads cut of so it sounds plausible... And that tunnel wasn't really supposed to be an escape route, but a trap for invading armies as it was supposed to flood with water after someone breached the door and entered the tunnel...

She probably found out that Rhulad is a cheater! :( His power would put him more in the category of sorcerer and we do see before with Lady Envy that Seguleh won't necessarily attack if they know their opponent can use magic against them.

I'm totally not one for spoon feeding, but it would have been nice for SE to have explained that one just a little bit. I like what you guys have said though so I'm good now

I'm with Apt here - she fought Karsa and lost, also losing her status as 11th so for her the games were over. She's not chickening out, she just doesn't have the status to be a challenger any more so might as well bug out and go home.

Do keep in mind they picked her up lying fevered in a little dinghy around Callows or something like that, she didn't come to them from the Seguleh islands or anything like that. This bit means she *might* not be still following the entire Seguleh code or some such. [TtH:]

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

I recall it being said Rhulad had defeated all but 2 opponents. And if i remember correctly, didnt it say something about the Segulah being injued and thus maybe "disqualified"?

Aye. She had to recover because Karsa had broken her wrists, leaving her unable to fight.

Uhm, no. There were palace healers present to heal any injury, including her broken wrists.

The challengers were encouraged to fight so that the palace officials might gauge the groups strengths. Weaker ones fight Rhulad before the strongest.

I think Samar sees it: Karsa wouldn't care, Taxillian is a possibility, so is Senior Assessor, & whatever the Gral's name is... It certainly isn't the Malazan soldiers, because I just re-read that part.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

The Malazans thoughts are (I read this earlier today) paraphrased: "Did you see who just came out of there?" "Yeah, I did." "I looked down the entire time." "Me, too, that's why we are still alive. Find the Fist and tell him we have our way in..."

I thought she was the 13th actually.
