The ironic thing is that the writer is actually a woman. I agree though, that review was patronising and insulting on so many levels. Completely unwarranted. She could've just trashed the TV show if she didn't like it, but no, she had to insult fantasy, its fans, especially its women fans, and topped it all off with a Sex and the City idiot fan stereotype. Impressive blast radius, all told.

That review has stirred up quite a bit of controversy. Female fans of Martin flooded the comments section so much and so fast on that article that NYT had to shut it down. A guy named Troy Patterson from Slate wrote a rebuttal, along with Daniel Abraham. Then last night, GRRM posted something about it on his Livejournal. All told, it really seems like this woman stepped in it.
What's curious to me is that she could have taken a lot of the same potshots at, say, the Sopranos. It was a genre show, one that is stereotypically regarded as drawing significantly more male fans than female fans. She could've whined about the fact that nearly every episode features extensive scenes in the Bing, or with Tony and one of his mistresses, etc... But she actually cites the Sopranos as an example of what HBO can do right. Her argument basically just seems to be "HBO can take genre and make it into something great, but not with fantasy - that's just too far." If she actually bothered to cite content from the show to back this up, I might be more inclined to concede, but as it is she just comes off as lazy.

Even worse! What an idiot. Besides it seems very unprofessional for a critic to bash a series because he/she doesn't like the genre, that should be irrelevant.

I got the impression that she has never read the books. Her description of the Series does not really match my memory of it, though it has been a long time. I won't be able to watch to find out how the show actually is, so I will rely on the people here to see how off (hopefully) she is. The Slate review was also terrible, the guy started by saying he hated fantasy, and yet continued to review it, so I have yet to see a review that is not from someone who hates the entire genre.

So fucking awesome. nearly all the actors are perfectly spot on. viserys, catelyn, ned, jaime. wow. that stare down with ned and jaime was INTENSE! and the total casualness in the shove jaime gives bran. just brilliant acting all around.
the only thing that i found slightly odd was the mixing of caucasian and black skin tones among the dothraki. its not a big deal but it seems strange to have such diversity among a nomadic tribe. it would be all right if the books made some mention of say, travellers joining the dothraki, but iirc, the dothraki are pretty antagonistic toward outsiders

I thought it was great, though to tell you the truth seeing Dany naked and knowing how old she is in the books kinda tripped me out. I'm over it. BTW, the Hound looks SICK

Mayhaps this thread should be retitled into a more generic "Game of Thrones on HBO" thread for discussion?
PS: Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean were perfect in every way.

Amazing, amazing theme! Wow.
I didnt really like the beginning of GoT and I didnt really like this episode, but I cant wait till we get to the politicking and scheming of KL. And Bronn! People who havent read the books will be screaming for more Bronn. You just know he is going to carry this show.
Makes me kind of sad that Chain of Dogs was never picked up for anything. It would have made an absolutely wonderful miniseries.

It's gonna be up on HBO PL tonight, but I'm not home to watch it. Got to tell dad to record it, and watch it on friday evening.

No idea when it's coming here, I haven't even seen any adverts for it in NZ media. We don't have HBO, we have national networks that buy most of their shows from foreign networks. Sometimes we get shows within weeks of their overseas release, sometimes it takes months or a year or more. I watched BSG season 2 on DVD well before it screened here, same with season 3. And the Walking Dead still hasn't aired here. And I don't watch it but apparently we're two seasons behind on Drop Dead Diva.
But I really don't want to wait a year to see this, so I might have to resort to other means.
