I know I probably should read the series, but I have to say that I might be, let us say "able" for lack of a better word, to better enjoy the tv series simply because I won't be expecting some, like Ulrik said, crucial scene like Eddard taking a dump on the throne or whatever.

That's the problem with most book, game, comicbook, whatever adaptions. There's always the rabid fanboys screaming and shouting that some ultimately irrelevant detail wasn't included.

Spoiler

In any case, I think I'll be better able to enjoy it without having seen it. ASoIaF is, I am told, nowhere near as complicated as Malazan book of the Fallen.

I think they're both equally as complicated, but ASoIaF doesn't skip around as much and explains things a bit more deeply than Malazan usually does.

I've forgotten - did Eddard really take a dump on the throne?

If the Kingsguard aren't all in white, what would visually denote them as different from the knights around them? Perhaps we'll spend more time with them on-screen, instead of them being bit-players...

If I remember correctly, they'll have gold cloaks trimmed with white. Which, I think, is a horrible choice because it would be rather difficult to distinguish them with the City Guard.

white was removed because it was shitty to film wasnt it?
Anyone who comp[lains about an adaptation because of costume alterations like this need slapped.
I'll listen to legitimate complains involving plot lines but seeing as GRRM is so heavily invovled they can be put to bed as well.

Very sad news: Margaret John, who was cast as Old Nan in GAME OF THRONES, has passed away at the age of 84. She can be heard in voiceover for one of the trailers for the show. She is best-known for playing Doris in GAVIN & STACEY and has also guested in DOCTOR WHO (both the old and new series).

All of her scenes for Season 1 have been shot already, so she'll still appear in Season 1 of the show. Her character has a small role in the second book so I assume they'll either recast or simply drop the character for the second season.

Is it sad that the first thing I thought was "At least they filmed all her scenes"?

OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

You're right, but there's still been no shortage of turds on the Iron Throne. :)

I hope the show succeeds as it will be a very good swansong for her to have been involved in at the end of her life, as her last role. Very sad news though indeed.

Pronounciation guide for the TV series. Mostly it seems the same as the books, although 'Ser' is prononuced 'SAIR' for some reason (it's just an earlier spelling of 'Sir'). Harrenhal is also pronounced oddly (HAIR-in-hall). Generally, not too bad.

Flip... Massive GoT billboard near my house. Makes me regret cancelling Sky. Does anyone know if Sky Atlantic is available on FreeSat?

Sky? Never heard of it.

Sky = Fox.

Also, just stream if off the web. Surfthechannel will have it up pretty quickly after release.

I very much doubt it. What with Sky advertising it so heavily (seriously, those posters are EVERYWHERE!), there's no way they'd let one of their rivals have it. They're pushing this as their major differentiator from the other TV providers, and it sounds like it's going to be awesome. Unfortunately I'm stuck with Virgin for the foreseeable future...:(

This show looks AMAZING. I read A Game of Thrones just so I could watch this, thus violating my policy to avoid ASOI&F until it had been completed. That way, I wouldn't be stuck waiting forever on ADWD, and then the next two volumes, like everyone else. Oh well at least I have three more books to get through before I reach that stage. I'll just ration them over the next 50 years and I should be sweet.

Will probably have to re-read aGoT before it starts to remind myself what the hell actually happens in the book... but quite excited now!

Sky showed the first two episodes of BOARDWALK EMPIRE on their Freeview channel, Sky 3, to try to hook people into subbing to Sky. It's possible they'll do the same for THRONES. Beyond that, Sky and Virgin are currently in discussions over getting Sky Atlantic onto Virgin Media. I think it'll happen but probably not until quite late this year or early next. Maybe in time for Season 2, but definitely not for the first season unless something drastically changes.

Sky have announced that GAME OF THRONES will air in the UK on Monday 18 April, just 1 day after US transmission (and thanks to the time difference, rather less than 24 hours). Huzzah!
