I didn't realize most of the early books in this series are out of print. Guess I'll have to wait longer than I expected to read it. How long is this series anyway? Do they all read like standalone books? How big is the world Stover creates?

It's all available in ebook.
No you don't.
Four glorious books.
No 3 and 4 are essentially one story.

Another great interview just went up here. Including this bit (relevant to a couple pages back in the thread):
The Stove said:
I never intended to make you buy more books to find out how one of my stories ends – the only reason Act of Atonement is in two volumes is that it is actually two different stories that combine to make a larger one (kind of the way the two narratives combine in Caine Black Knife itself), and I couldn’t think of a way to make it all work as a single volume. Not to mention that it would be longer than Blade, and thus be a bit of a handful in paperback.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

In CBK, did anyone else see this: Marade, Knight TARTHell. Strong, blond, loyal, not-quite-pretty knight, Tarth. Is she a tribute to Brienne or is it coincidence?I

Finished these up before Christmas.
just recalled there was a thread for them somewhere.
not reading 10 pages of OMFG ITS AWESOME.
the first two books? Yeah, entertaining stuff, Caines a bastard, a bastard who get shit done. My kinda guy.
Third book was good too, not as good as the first two, but getting the long retreat from boedecken was awesome
Fourth book can go fuck a goat. Drawn out crap.
Now, as a whole, stover has created an entertaining setting, earths fucked, dystopian future (correct word?) That settings been done to death, but stover gives us a great window out, we only look back on fucked earth to see why such escapism that over world provided is so profitable. I loved that.
I loved the cast for the most part, the story just dragged its balls over broken glass in the final quarter. It was unnecessarily convoluted and at times painful to read.
Profanity.
Anyone who knows me knows I have no fucking problem whatsoever with cursing. Its an effective way to add emphasis to a ststment and catch someone's attention (people who cant say a sentence without every word being fucking annoy me, I work with a guy who uses the word fucking as the French use that irritating 'aåuhjjhghh' between all their words)
But Caines cursing, whilst inventive, is fucking stupid at times. In a stress situation you scream fuck, you don't produce a lengthy overcomplicated, possibly physically impossible, statement. It just read at times like a kid who was given leave to curse in a school report and was getting inventive.
if its a threat or a conversation, throw them in, its part of his character. But mid fight or explosive rant it pulled.me out of the narrative, shout fuck as you fall off a cliff, not fuck me in the ass sideways, there isn't fucking time.

So I finally started the first book--finished "Day 1". So far the writing is smooth and the story has kept my attention the whole time. I am intrigued by the villains Ma'elKoth and Berne, and want to see more of them. It definitely seems like the pieces have been set for a kick ass FUCKING story.

The first book is one of those rare masterfuckingpieces where everything comes the fuck together to create a story with a great build up and an extremely satisfying mindfuck of an ending.
I have trouble thinking of any real flaws in the first book and anyone who says there are any can go fuck themfucks. It's just a really good self contained story.

Finished Heroes Fucking Die. Just excellent, completely lived up to the hype.
There were several little twists and turns along the way, but nothing too out of the ordinary for this kind of novel. Except one thing that I did NOT see coming at the end was
One minor complaint
And regarding the next book (which I won't read right away; I just don't do that with series), I'm aware of the general reputation of it. BoT is probably the fan favorite, but it's also more divisive than HD since it's supposedly much longer and more tedious at times. I read the blurb and they make it look like
Anyway yeah, good fucking book.

Fear not. BoT is much more fantasy-oriented than HD. (Stover, in fact, considers HD to be sci-fi, while BoT is epic fantasy.)

I pushed the CoCaine onto a Dr at work few months ago.
She came up to me yesterday and couldn't stop talking about it, and it totally made me want to go and start a reread. So far I've got her into Dresden, Stover and Caine... I'm building up to MBotF.

Glad you liked it EoDO, i've been pimping it for years here and it's always nice when someone new tries and likes.
Also if you didn't like it we'd have to fucking fuck you the fuck upfuck.
But there is a lot of RAFO to your questions and BoT answers some of it.

Yeah, BoT is a radical shift from HD in many respects, and it doesn't work for some people. I personally loved it for exactly that reason.
Also because it's fucking awesome.

21 chapters into Blade of Tyshalle, a few things I just have to say:
1) The Blind God: This reminds me of a book named "The Sum of All Men" . the blind god is that. It is such a great concept as a metaphor and when it becomes a real god that's just so .... AWESOME.
2)Magic vs assault rifles and nerve gas : Soooo much win.
3)Crippled Cain fighting makes me want to go hit some random person in the street.
4) Faith: that's just so damn dark, and so realistic it makes me want the human race extinct.
5) I don't understand what philosophy Stover is advocating, if you look at the surface of things, it seems like he is advocating anarchism, but there some bits in the book (for example the part with Ma'elKoth and Duncan arguing when Harry calls Ma'elkoth's arguments logical and Duncan's arguments just quotes) and it really makes you think. Sometimes Authoritarian governments are really better than "fair" ones.
Anyway, great book so far.
