Sadly, i'm blanking on the mirror thing. Fuck. Can you add a detail?

That was the device Raith used to torture Caine, right?

I think he's talking about the device they use to communicate. Basically Facetime.

And I'm not sure; I remember at first thinking it was Earth technology, but the way they described it made it seem more like magic.

That was a fucking "Artan mirror" that they used for fucking communication. I thought the fucking "Caine mirror" was another fucking thing entirely.

Fucking Google motherfuckers:

BoT said:

The Caineslayer had a device.

The Caine Mirror, he called it privately; a box shaped roughly like a medium-sized valise, filled with tangles of fine cabling and a bank of transparent glass bulbs, powered by a chip of griffinstone smaller than the nail of the Caineslayer's little finger. On its front were a pair of handgrips covered with thin-beaten gold; between the handgrips was a mirror of silvered glass. To hold those handgrips, to direct his disciplined mind into that silvered glass, was to enter an intimacy so extreme that it transcended obscenity: as though he'd gouged out the man's eye and fucked his bloody socket.

It let him inside the man who had been Caine.

You can find a couple of Stover's Caine short stories online. One about young Hari and a meta thing involving Conan and Elric I think. After that, you're just as fucked as the rest of us I'm afraid. Sorry man.

I recommend, if you haven't already, the Takeshi Kovacs books by Richard Morgan, Ash: A Secret History by Mary Gentle, and The Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence, all of which have similarities to an extent to the Caine experience. Takeshi Kovacs most of all despite being the least similar in setting.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I'll second PG on that. Morgan nails a similar tone to Stover and his Kovacs books are noir/mil sf candy.

I'll also add that the Land Fit for Heroes trilogy by Morgan (The Steel Remains, The Cold Commands, The Dark Defiles) is also similar and a lot moreso because of the fantasy/SF hybrid mash-up setting.

Totally true, but worth reading KOVACS first.

Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, Woken Furies is the order. You can also add in Black Man/Thirteen (alternate titles in the UK/US) anywhere you like.

The books aren't temporally next to each other - as considerable time passes in between each installment - yet Broken Angels and Woken Furies are indeed direct sequels to Altered Carbon.

I felt compelled to post here, after all the "hype" :p .

I finally got round to reading the first two (e-)books. In my opinion, the first one was ok to good and quite enjoyable. The second one, however, was only decent at best (somewhat trite and poorly written). I'll still give the third one a go and hope for the best.

Today's (tiny little) ray of hope, courtesy of Twitter:

Matthew F@#$ing Stover said:

Let me be clear: The Acts of Caine is over. (A trilogy in four books.)

However, there is (still to be written) The Age of Caine.

Someday.
