Huh, isn't that weird.

In Canada the books have all maintained the original style all the way up to and including HEIRS OF THE BLADE...the only difference is that the most recent one is a big trade paperback (the rest are MMP only)...but the style and design is identical.

A couple of things...

1. I TRULY hope that the spines of the books stay the same (The scripty font) with a solid colour backdrop. The covers can change all they like, but I swear to lucifer that if books 1-7 on my shelf have one style of spine and 8-onwards (Have only seen the THE AIR WAR cover, not spine yet) have another, there will be fucking hell to pay.

2. 150 pages into DRAGONFLY FALLING now, and I'm truly enjoying it more than the first book. It seems like there are more characters running around doing things, and it's like being dropped into the middle of the war, which is cool. So far the only thing I have issue with is Stenwold being stupid enough to fall for Arianna's OBVIOUSLY staged affectations. I'm hoping that Tisamon is bright enough to run her ass through with his badass arm claw.

3. You can't help but like Thalric for some reason.

4. Because she's half-bred, Tynisa has no arm claw right? The best she can hope for is the ganutlet blade thingie? Is that right?

5. I've really warmed up to this series and I'm excited to have so many volumes of it yet to read!

6. The mosquito kinden...quite unexpectedly interesting.

7. Are Alvic (sp?) and Seda the only wasp royalty left? Am I to understand the rest of the royal family is deceased?

Okay cool. I assumed.

Nearing the 200 page mark and still going strong. Really settled into the world now and I find that Tchaikovsky really has a knack for pacing and breaking up each characters sections.

Might pick up BLOOD OF THE MANTIS for my trip to Boston next weekend.

Just randomly noticed that HEIRS has come out in a smaller version...but it's not the MMP size that all the others are, it's the fucking medium sized square new size that books are all becoming. It's not going to match on my shelf.

Nearly done DRAGONFLY FALLING (on the last 100 pages)

So far it's been well done throughout. If I had a complaint it's that everything nearly flies pace-wise up until the attack on the Collegium by the Vekken ant army VIA the Wasps...at which point I feel he spends a little too much time on that attack...and I feel he does so to give weight to the eventual betrayal VIA General Maxim of Thalric (which is an awesome scene BTW), but that the actual attack could have been done in less chapters as it got a BIT trying for about 20 pages or so. That said, everything in amongst that has been cream so I'm not complaining much. Highlights so far are Tynisa and Tisamon going to Parysol and then to Faylal and getting to see the Mantids in their natural habitat, Tynisa becoming a Weaponmaster (I assumed she would), Every scene with Felise in it is awesome.....though I'm still a little lost as to why she so frequently loses her memory about what she's doing (did I miss something?)...with only hunting of Thalric bringing her back...this was most obvious when she fought Tisamon in the alleyway when he was hunting Arianna. Does this get revealed later?

A really solid outing and I picked up BLOOD OF THE MANTIS on the weekend, so I'm ready to continue the story. I may take a BRIEF sci-fi book break before starting it, but it will definitely be read soon as I'm really into this series now.

The Battle Of The Rails was really well executed, but it was REALLY unfair to have to watch fucking Drephos and Totho come in and use the unfair advantage of the snapbows to decimate the Sarnesh numbers...especially when Scelae and her Mantids had come in to the rescue a few chapters before. I swear to the gods I fucking HATE Totho now. That little shit has no goddamned spine and is taking out his lackluster performance as an Apprentice at the Collegium on his old allies. I don't care if he initially did it to save Salma...the brave thing to do in the face of Drephos request was to refuse to make the snapbows. Sorry, but you side with the evilest fucker in the books Totho...and the Wasps to boot? I hope someone kills him....and part of me hopes it's Che...but another part would love to see Tisamon or Tynisa take him apart piece by piece. I don't give a shit how conflicted he is about what his purpose is, VS who his friends are...nor how sick he feels for creating terrible war machines...he's a coward plain and simple. The Tark Ants VIA Spider-ship rescue of the Collegium came at the perfect time, things looked bleakest and they'd lost a lot of people (Kymon, Nicrephos and Scuto being the foremost), so that was glorious...fave line from that bit was Parops said to stenwold "I hear you have a little Vekken infestation." Awesome. And to get to see it from the other side through the Vekken Leader Akalia (sp?) as her attack crumbles around her as the Tarkesh re-enforce the wall breach...that was excellent.

This book started strong, and for the most part stayed that way (aside from a longish 30 pages in the middle), and so far has truly finished strongly. LOVED it.

I was going to take something else to Boston with me, but I think I WILL actually start BLOOD OF THE MANTIS tonight...really want to see where things go next.

that's funny about totho. one of the best characters in the books for sure. i've read up to book five, and seeing as how you're only at book two i'll just say that totho's development is still in act 1 in that book, and i don't think i've reached act 3.

Yeah, Totho really grows as a character, in some ways. His development is not always what you'd expect.

2/3s through book 2, and it's way better than book 1. The first half of book one just jumped around so very damned much I half lost track of who was what doing where with whom. Book 2's much tighter in it's pacing. Damned glad I noticed this thread and was like, 'Oh, so there's alot of people talking about this. Might want to give it a looksie.'

hehe, I actually thought Book 2 quite weak, tbh. 3 was where it really picked up for me.
But it's a good series, so far, and i'm glad its getting more exposure.

Not as weak as book 1. It just jumps so much, when it needed to pull you in (Especially for the start of such a large series).

I'm up to the breaking of Collegium's walls and Kymon, just an unknown before now, is coming into his own. And you've got some really good shit going on every which way.

Although, I do wish a few of the characters who 'seemed' to die did actually factually fucking die. That'd up the stakes, imo. It's the one thing that makes me criticize the series.

Finished DRAGONFLY and really enjoyed the ending a lot! Great book, all told.

I've started right into BLOOD OF THE MANTIS, and loved the opening chapter on the ship with the new character Taki.
