Finished Dragonfly last night and I really enjoyed it. Blood is alot smaller then the 1st 2 so it shouldnt take long to read it and I like the new map of the Empire and Spiderlands.

I need to get into DRAGONFLY myself. It's in my TBR pile, but it may not happen till after Christmas at this point. I keep seeing that large softcover trade of HEIRS OF THE BLADE at Chapters/Indigo with that gorgeous cover art and think to myself, man I want to get that far in the series!

I've got about 50 pages left of Dragonfly. Think I'm going to take a break and read something else before starting book 3.

That's the thing. There's so much out there to read. Why spend time to read, two three or even four books of a series in the hope that maybe it gets better later?

I don't have to HOPE, I've heard from more than a few people now that the latter half of the series (and second story arc) is MUCH better, and I already like the world and insect-aspected characters. So if it gets better as I've heard in the later books I am willing to wade through the earlier ones.

hmm
I did struggle through those books, 'tis true. may not have been the most rational thing to do.

However, the thing was, I read both dragonfly and Blood when I was on a 1-week vacation, and they comprised my only real reading material.

also, say what you may about his characterization (esp early on), but Tchaikovsky can write some awesome battles.

How many pgs is it if you looked? 3 and 4 are very small compared to 1 and 2. My tpb of 3 is exaclty 300 pgs and 4 isnt much bigger.

I haven't
but it looked close to RG/TTH in thickness, iirc.

EDIT: and yet amazon tells me it's 320 pages.

which makes it all the odder why it's not out in mmpb.

Not just the format, but the price is one size larger as well. :s I haven't bought it yet, I really don't have space on my shelf for these big ugly tpb books and they are awfully impractical to drag around in my purse. I guess I'll wait for mmpb next year...

you get a short glimpse of the Spiderlands in The Sea Watch.

And Heirs of the Blade features them as well, I think (but don't quote me on that)

So I started book 5 and Im liking the new direction its going in after finishing up the 1st arc. I didnt see alot of those characters outcomes at the end of 4, he reminded me alot about Martin with that book 4 lol.

Book 5 was a bit strange. it felt weak at the start (after the pure awesomeness of Salute the dark) but the new setting got pretty cool as the book went along. The final battle was EPIC.
oh and *minor character development spoiler*

I didn't notice the slowdown you guys talked about in EiBaG, though the constant skirmishes got a bit old.

100 pages into Dragonfly Falling and it's awesome. The battle going on is fantastic. Such great imagery with all of the Kinden and beasts. This is one reason I love fantasy.

the teenage love triangles were what did me in in the first book. that and the emo-ness of certain people in book 2.

The battles and all teh war-stuff is fantastic. but those few people.... sigh.

Good Im glad your liking it. It gets fucking awesome once you get to Bk 3... From what Ive heard most people dont really like Bk 2 but I didnt find that to be the case at all. 1 was the hardest for me trying to wrap my head around Insect people.

Im currently waiting on Bk 6 from Europe right now. I ordered it Feb 24 and it only just shipped 2 days ago...

6? Sea Watch?

why not just order from Canada? I've read it in mmpb last.... November? I think.

Currently waiting for "Heirs of the Blade" to become an mmpb.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but I noticed in Waterstones that the UK publishers have 'done a Malazan' and changed the size of the books halfway through the series. Unlike the Malazan books (so far) they're also re-releasing the earlier novels in the new size and with new cover art:

I think I prefer the older covers.

I like the new ones better but it sucks that they changed the size, and that there is no longer a US publisher. I'm going to have to order books 6 onwards from the UK and I don't like that new size they use.

I honestly don't quite understand what was wrong with the oldschool MMP size of books.

They've redone the Sharpe books in that weird new size and even the Jame Rollins books.

I think the new design is British in origin (as when I was over there a lot of the books I picked up had that shape)

Yep, pretty much all books over here are the larger size now.
