Started SALUTE THE DARK this morning, and I'm about 40 pages in...wow, really excellent stuff! The most compelling the series has been thus far....and it feels like the last book was a table dressing for this...all plot lines interesting and everything is moving forward.

Oh and does anyone else picture Thalric as played by Michael Fassbender? I just do.

you know, i never thought of it, but fassbender would be pretty damn near perfect.

hmm what about say... tisamon? i could see a cold and brutal ralph fiennes fitting the bill. he does cold and brutal so well, and this time he gets a nose.

can't wait to indulge myself in this series, as i already have bks 1-2, then i picked up in advance 5-6, put up reservations for 3-4 & 7- Heirs of the Blade PB, good thing this thread doesn't have much spoilers, as i avoid reading threads with too much spoilers,

speaking of actors, the one on the cover of Salute the Dark TOR PB new Ed, looks like the one on the movie Eragon, i don't know, that's who i first thought when i saw the cover, ;)

Question, I always assumed from afar that the cover of SALUTE THE DARK was a fly....but now that I have the books and see the white eyes, he's obviously a moth...but is it meant to be Achaeos?

well, I have 1-2 tor new pb, then 5-6 tor mmpbs, I may pick up bks 3-4 & 7 by next week,
good to see Tisamon again, I picture him the way I do with Kalam, though he's a Mercenary he's also an Assasin, and they are both badass,,
Tynisa's my favorite so far, her and Salma,
just met the scorpion-guy, nothing spectacular so far, he's mostly just on the background,

Oh,, and Achaeos.. Posted Image

down to the last 100 pg, will immediately follow Dragonfly Falling, then a short break after as i still don't have Blood of the Mantis

i'm beginning to like Achaeos a lot, would like to meet the other Kinden mentioned by Salma, i think, like Slug, and others,
i feel a little pity for Totho, he was Friend-zoned, :) haha,

Dragonfly Falling is awesome. I didn't like how Empire just had a whole bunch of small skirmishes...Dragonfly changes that. I also really liked the new characters that were brought in. They were interesting and unique within the series.

That whole part of Book 1 read as a bad teenage romance to me. good thing Tchaikovsky's characterization improved considerably... eventually.

I still haven't picked up "Air war" (i've been restraining myself to mmpb purchases. I buy too many books as is, so I have to not spend as much money). Glad to hear people think it's awesome, though.

finally finished Dragonfly Falling, with after all the christmas celebrations and visiting of relatives, i'm finally finished and it's good, the real positives are the battles, esp The Battle of the Rails, i'm reminded of Malazan, as there are many battles taking place in just 1 book, though not much as emotionally epic as Malazan,
my faves:
still Tynisa and Tisamon - their father/daughter tandem is good
new fave - Felise and Thalric, as read from upthread, their back story and personalities is good reading, and Thalric really grows on you,

question: since they are developing weapons artificers Drephos and Totho, i'm curious if they'll be able to create something like Malazan's munitions?

-- Edit --
just remembered, Drephos had something that could soften walls and they have airships that drops incendiaries, but i still would liketo see them develop munitions, gotta love sappers and munitions,

is anyone still reading this series? i just finished the ninth book, War Master's Gate, and it sets the tenth and final book up to be a serious rip-roaring affair. the depth of the series gets literally and figuratively ridiculous, though i feel like tchaikovsky is just a little less articulate than he's wanting to be. but then, this very much allows you to step into his world and work it out for yourself. this is entirely possible too, because imo, his world, while slightly smaller in scope than the malaverse, is vividly realistic and fully imagined, sometimes almost dripping off the pages.

Started book 3, Blood of the Mantis. Pretty good so far.

It's come to my attention that there are several short stories related to this series. Does anyone have a list, and the order in which they should be read?

There are many short stories on his website, they definitely aren't crucial though. There is a reading list on his website somewhere. As I recall most of them occur after book 4.

So, reading "Air War" and.... holy shit, Tchaikovsky writes war well. I mean, I knew that from Tark back in Book 1, but seriously.

Just read past the

I read book and did not like it, seems some of you really enjoy the series. Does it improve? Should I give it a second shot?

From what I've heard the series gets better as it goes a long but I read 3 or 4 books and there were more things I hated about the books than I liked to I cut my loses.

Are these being sold in American stores again, yet? I was able to buy up to Scarab's Path, but then it's like Tchaikovsky just dried up on the shelves and I haven't been able to find anything, since. I know I could just buy the UK ones online so I can catch up, but I was hoping to hold out and give money to the US publisher that picks up the books as a reward, haha.

I checked on Amazon but didn't find all the books. For example, I only found the Kindle version of Sea Watch. bookdepository.co.uk has all the books, though, and they ship everywhere for free.

Prompted to re-pickup the series, I have restarted SALUTE THE DARK (since I was only about halfway through and I forget what happened)...I hope to finish this arc, cause I hear the next arc that begins in Book 5 is pretty damn good.

Also, as to the new covers (all of which are available on the shelves in Canada)... the HEIRS TO THE BLADE is easily the best art-wise....but THE SEA WATCH gives it a good run for it's money tho.
