"In the evolution of R-less pronunciation, Boston led the English-speaking world," Richard Bailey of the University of Michigan writes in 2012's "Speaking American: A History of English in the United States." Dropping Rs was a feature of the language in rustic Britain, Bailey writes, and the more settlers that came to Massachusetts from southeastern England, the fewer Rs were enunciated.

It even shows up in 17th century documents written in Massachusetts, before English spellings were standardized. It's not uncommon to see "Geoge" for "George" and "fouth" for "fourth" in documents from the 1600s.
Why Do Bostonians Drop Their Rs?

Obviously Boston wasn't "leading" the trend if it was getting it from rural southeastern England; but perhaps the author means "leading the urban English-speaking world"...

My Nan always talked bad about that even though she routinely did it. You would never get her to admit it though.

Grandma had her funeral today. Bummer.

I have been in full blown out of control eating mode since Christmas. I have put on 75 pounds in that time which doesn’t look like a real number. Back down I go.

I’m sorry for your loss.

On the weight gain, it happens. You know how to take it off. Don’t beat yourself up over it.

Sorry to hear about your grandma due.

Spent the evening in the pediatric accident and emergency department. Seven year old with a football injury. Pretty sure it's the first of many. I was also pretty sure the swollen ankle and dramatic limp and needing to be carried everywhere were just a bad sprain. But you start doubting yourself and second guessing. And then you think well it's better to be safe than sorry. Four hours sitting waiting to see a doctor and then you think maybe it's better to be sorry in the comfort of your own home.

Anyway. X-ray confirmed it's only a bad sprain and the doctor says "So I think you can probably stand up on it". And like feckin Lazarus rising - up he gets after saying for hours he can't possibly stand up.

Kids! You can never tell if you are giving too much sympathy or not enough. And he has to stay off school tomorrow to keep it elevated. He had two days off last week with a vomiting bug.

This is the bit where I should say that the important thing is that he is ok...

I just objected to Meta using generative AI on my Facebook account. It was accepted. Messing with my groove that I had to object at all and it was a faff. And that it will make not a blind bit of difference. AI messes with my groove immensely. I can see the potential for good. But come on - we all know where this is heading.

My industry is heavily involved in AI and I've been to a few conferences lately with people spouting off about how it's going to be great (but yes we have to control it properly). It strikes me the people spouting off are all going to make money and/or careers off this stuff. My job isn't at risk from AI in the short to medium term but my job will definitely change. Long term you won't need as many me's to get the job done.

Have been operating in too many pharmaceutical and AI circles lately. Feels like I'm hovering around the axis of evil! Really interesting to see people justify their jobs as saving humanity. And from an angle they are correct - they seem like nice people, working hard on innovative products that can do a lot of good. But they neglect to mention the "and making a bucket load of money for my employer while I am at it". As a Regulator I'm also making a career out of what they create but I feel I can spin my placement on the right side of history with fewer mental leaps. Feel tainted though.

A big part of me wants to just go and live in a tree somewhere. Tree houses have bills too though I suppose.

It’s really odd that people don’t realize how bad AI is for us. Seeing what people are using it with creating child porn is disgusting, especially considering that it is ruining lives, but on the big picture has no one seen War Games or read a Gibson novel? Our Gen should know better.

I'm optimistic that in the long run AI will make it so that no one makes any money. Well, one way or another....

I’ll admit, I have never made it through the matrix because I’d fall asleep in the middle. Plenty of good cyberpunk books out there.

Clearly the best way to persuade people that AI is going to be a force for good is to have them watch this movie:

Quote

Atlas review – Jennifer Lopez learns to love AI in silly Netflix mockbuster

The star plays an analyst forced to see AI's benefits in a brash sci-fi adventure

Well, at least it's progress...

For the new generation I guess it will have to be condensed into whatever takes over short-form video after the TikTok ban goes into effect (since ByteDance appears genuinely determined not to sell). Or maybe the AR/VR TikTok equivalent. There have been iirc some promising studies on the potential of VR/AR for more effective propaganda. But let's make it pro-future propaganda, eh?

But AI still has a ways to go:

Quote

Recent examples of [Google] AI Over[Lord TM]views going haywire [...] include claiming Barack Obama was a Muslim president [...] and that people should eat "at least one small rock per day."

On another occasion, when a user searched "I'm feeling depressed," it responded: "One Reddit user suggests jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge."

Google's AI Overviews Being Laughed at by CEO of Perplexity After the Glue Pizza Fiasco (businessinsider.com)

I confess I lol'd at that last one, but... as an investor I'm not thrilled. (Well, not in an ultimately good way....)

Even worse, GOAT Tommy Lee's prediction that Nvidia's massive earnings beat would initiate a massive inflow from money markets into the stock market has not materialized---yet. OTOH that presents a bit of an opportunity...

I hate ok thx, Ok or any of the variations there off as tetxreplies. To me they seem dismissive, disinterested or rude. A lot of Americans seem to use it all the time and they dont seem to mean it in that way or do they?

I dont know if this a cultural thing or a me thing but I hate it.

Speaking of AI, can anyone recommend a free AI resume app? A recruiter recommended that I update my resume with one. Hopefully something relatively easy to figure out this weekend.

Supervillains say "excellent", superheroes say "kthx".

There's really no excuse for not texting back a very polite, considerate, empathetic, personalized, situationally fine-tuned, and verbose response now that we have generative AI to do all that automatically (and if you occasionally tell people to make glue pizza, eat rocks, and jump off the Golden Gate bridge... well here's hoping they don't take that as authorization to waste your company's money on it!).

As Stephen Wolfram says,

Quote

It's a sort of a new level of human interface.

[...] A typical use case might be you are trying to write some report for some regulatory filing. You've got five points you want to make, but you need to file a document.

So you make those five points. You feed it to the LLM. The LLM puffs out this whole document. You send it in. The agency that's reading it has their own LLM, and they're asking their LLM, "Find out the two things we want to know from this big regulatory filing." And it condenses it down to that.

So essentially what's happened is you've used natural language as a sort of transport layer that allows you to interface one system to another.

Stephen Wolfram on Artificial Intelligence's Future (reason.com)

Incidentally... many people in GenZ apparently consider it rude to use periods... from the New York Times:

Quote

No More Periods When Texting. Period.

[...] To younger people, putting a period at the end of a casually written thought could mean that you're raring for a fight.

Spoiler

No More Periods in Texting. Period. - The New York Times (nytimes.com)
