This is most of the problem, unfortunately.
Vancouver, to an extent Montreal have similar issues.

We need other cities in the province, north, south, and in between to start getting industry....we can't all keep pretending like Toronto is the only worthwhile hub. If you built up like say London and Barrie into more city-like places with bigger industry then you could feasibly get people to movie further out of that core and spread across the province better, but we are all crammed into the bottom 1/8 of the province because all the "work" is in the GTA. It's insanity.

That would help, but it's a housing thing. Knock some of the individual houses down and build big apartment buildings where people wanna live. This decreases sprawl, serves a population who wants to live where they already are, and eventually, enough housing gets built.

Yes/no. You get more housing but also more people living in less space, and since it's still desirable space the prices tend towards the higher end for condos or rentals and meanwhile things get more crowded and trust me TO is already plenty crowded.

An alternative solution is better infrastucture - mass transit and better commuting roads (and sufficient parking), but those are mostly municipal or provincial costs and compete w other priorities, while someone's always willing to bulldoze a block or two to put up more condos for private sale.

Telecommuting is a possible solution - let people work wherever they live. Still a problem if the job doesn't allow for this tho'.

There's lots of 'middle class affordable' houses in Southern California....just not in the western half. Live a little, folks, move to Needles, Baker, or Barstow.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

But don't you have sand instead of grass?

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.

Depends on what you mean by 'space'---replacing houses with much taller buildings will provide plenty of additional usable 'space'. But at risk of increasing exposure to pathogens... though some of that could be mitigated if everyone has access to fire escape stairs from their windows and is willing to walk down (and up) 100 stories (or perhaps some sort of open-air outdoor elevator?...). The staircase should also be mostly transparent to minimize the blocking of windows (wire stairs maybe? or fully transparent even---either way, looking down would be fun)....

Telecommuting + remote control of robots with good AI (humans helping to train the robots) would be best.

And for people who don't need so much space allow for micro-housing solutions---a pod to sleep in (some big enough for two people, maybe a VR helmet and a laptop too). Storage space for belongings....

For people who don't need a pod, perhaps a vertical stack of slide-out beds....

Just increase the vertical stack, and add some ladders or scaffolding. (Maybe you press a button for a ladder? AI regulated to avoid collisions.)

Skyscrapers full of these....

Not ideal of course....

Also: people should be allowed to live where they work (so long as they're not pressured to do so). Zoning laws forbidding that seem a bit ridiculous. Workspace can be leisure and sleeping space too.

'Elon Reportedly Wants Its Most "Hardcore" Tweeps to Sleep in Beds at Twitter HQ

[...] bedrooms come packed with unmade beds, orange carpet, and "drab" curtains.

[...] Earlier this year, Musk's other big company Tesla had reportedly told workers at its Shanghai, China factory they would need to sleep at work to continue production during lockdowns amidst the covid pandemic. The company reportedly brought out sleeping bags and mattresses for them to sleep on the factory floor. Earlier in November, there were more reports of Twitter employees using sleeping bags inside the office after working late.'

Counterpoint: beach

If Tatooine had been a beach planet the entire story would have gone in a completely different direction.

Don't worry, TeslaBot will raise their children (that or a remote control electroshock device and some AI driven cameras and sensors... best way to keep them from sneaking out, or call 911 if they're in need of assistance).

Did he buy all the houses for three times what they're worth then remove all the insulation and have nautical engineers check the work?

Sounds pretty efficient. They'll be able to buy pickaxes, kerosene, and food rations using company scrip.

Probably not worth noting that Elon terminated the entire janitorial staff at HQ this week.

They came with white hands and left with red hands.

If I were going to live in Baker, Barstow, or Needles, I might as well live in Death Valley and regularly light my house on fire. If I plan to live in SoCal, then I'm going to live on the water. Otherwise, Vermont, here I come!

He's preparing them for Mars... oh right, that's how he's going to solve the housing crisis (and maybe make back some of what he spent on Twitter...).

'San Francisco investigating Twitter over complaint it added beds to office rooms

[...] has not applied for any permits to use portions of the building for residential purposes

[...] an inquiry that has drawn scorn from Elon Musk.

[...] “So city of SF attacks companies providing beds for tired employees instead of making sure kids are safe from fentanyl. Where are your priorities @LondonBreed!?” he said on Twitter with a link to an article detailing an account from a father who says his baby overdosed on fentanyl after being exposed to the drug at a city playground.'

[...] Employees [said ...] “It’s yet another unspoken sign of disrespect. There is no discussion. Just like, beds showed up.”'

San Francisco investigating Twitter over complaint it added beds to office rooms

Mixed feelings about this... some people would almost certainly be fine living where they work. ('If you can work from home, why can't you home from work?'... lol.) Most people, maybe not. The problem with making it voluntary of course is pressure from employers to make it de facto mandatory (though employee backlash would I think make that unlikely... so long as the labor market's strong enough). It would eliminate the commute and help the environment though. And all that space going unused during the night could be used for something---sleeping quarters at the least. If not for the homeless, then for people willing to do a time-share arrangement... in spaces where there's no serious risk of theft or corporate espionage etc.....

The solution to "I have so much work that I have to sleep at the office" is to hire more people. Guess what donk decided to go the complete opposite of that and put pressure on the saps who stayed to put in more work than they're paid for.

Friends, do you not realise that we are witnessing the glorious American Dream in action? For what could be greater than to die at your desk in pursuit of making money? Papa Elon knows this and wants you to share the joy!

(In case you're wondering, it felt dirty to write that, even in jest...)
