My child still seems to think night time is for constant feeding or being awake. Or if he does go to sleep he really doesn't want to sleep in his Moses basket and will wake up and cry after a short time. So right now I'm sat awake with a sleeping baby on me so my wife can get some sleep.

I know there's a million different opinions about self soothing, co-sleeping and all related topics but we just don't really know what to do. He is such a lovely baby but it's really tiring. He used to stay down in his basket for quite a while but for whatever reason he isn't at the moment.

I don't like giving baby advice because they're all so different and what works for one won't for another. The only parenting advice I like to share is not to get too hung up on any one thing the baby does because by the time you get used to it he will have changed his habits! Just try anything sensible that comes to mind and otherwise ride it out. I think it's pretty normal for them to sleep well at first and then be terrible later :( Good luck!

My groove - I'm staying at my mother-in-laws house and "sleeping" in the same room as my 2 year old. Argh!

Yeah that's kind of how we're seeing it... He's only 6 weeks old and he's changed so much already, I reckon it'll be fine and we'll get there. Just flipping tired in the meantime...

Cluster feeding is very common(and rough for mummy to deal with), and our son was initially a cluster feeder too. Query: Are you swaddling him? With both our kids swaddling was the life saving key to getting them to sleep and away from the cluster feed...both in the bassinet and the crib. You can also buy pre-made swaddlers like Summer Infant’s SwaddleMe

https://www.summerin...y-change-1pk-sm

Our daughter slept in one from age 2 months until she was at least 1. And our son is in one now, though my wife also swaddles him in muslin cloth too as he claws at his face Nd it wakes him up, so the muslin keeps his arms down. And he sleeps soundly now.

May not be the case on your end, but worth a shot? Whatever happens, the cluster feeding will stop...it will either take time, or some other soothing method to get him to sleep, hang in there, you can usually measure these things in weeks.

————-

On my end, my daughter spiked 103.5 fever on Christmas Eve, and though it’s come down since, she’s still getting low grade fevers, so I’m going to have to take her to the walk-in and see if it’s viral or not...in case it’s not and she needs antibiotics. Sigh. Winter and daycares is such a cesspool of illness.

Sounds like a plan to me. We were living off sandwiches for every meal at the 6 week stage. People told me this and I didn't believe them at the time but once they stop sleeping on you you really miss it. My son is going through a phase where he likes to be cuddled for 10mins before bed and I secretly love it because he won't sit still enough for a hug the rest of the time. But yeah sleep deprivation is a bitch. The ability to string sentences together is over rated.

From just over 30 years distance, I can say that the good news is that is really just a blip but boy does it suck at the time. I think my daughter failed to sleep consistently at night for maybe 18 months - woke up at 11 wide awake and ready to party. For us the only solution was to attempt to do shifts otherwise we would have gone under with sleep deprivation.

Thanks all he's definitely getting better and the last few nights have seen improvements. We're off the opinion that we just take each day and night as they come. Sometimes it won't be so good but other times we can take heart from the victories haha.

Messing with my groove is the realization that the coming years will have many bereavements and illnesses.

Last Saturday, a friend lost his father. He is the first one from my group to lose a parent.

Yesterday I was with my SO as her father had an operation. A minor one, but its another reminder that everybody is getting older and more vulnerable.

I look at my parents and I know that eventually it will be me sitting in the hospital waiting room. They are in better health than a lot of their peers, but still it worries me.

Another thing I have realized that of my circle of friends, some have matured, acquired life skills and coping skills, and some have not. As in there is not a point where you are a full adult. They have jobs, good jobs, taxes everything, but in many ways they are still painfully immature and naive.

Yah I been thinking about that death thing regarding siblings. My grandma was one of 12, and the last two of them died in Nov and Dec. Makes me kinda wonder what order we are gonna go in.

Remember when I said my car wouldn't start the other evening?

https://forum.malaza...ost__p__1357603

Well, the mechanics got back to me. Broken fuel pump AND associated wiring loom. Which have to come from Brisbane. $1100. :(

So I took back the hire car today as I can't cover both the hire car AND pay for the repairs. Plus the power bill is due - and oh, did I mention how hot and shitty it has been lately and how with only one power company up here the prices are about double what I paid down south?

2019 is off to an auspicious start. :p

I don’t know how things are done down there, but mechanics normally mark up parts 30-40% over what you can buy them over the counter. Some will let you buy the parts and they’ll just charge labor. Might save you a couple hundred if you can find one that will let you.

Nah, not that bad. This is why I have savings to dig into. But it still sucks, eh?
Could be a lot worse though, so I guess I can still count myself lucky.

Yeah, true. Trouble is the parts have to come from Brisbane as there's none up here apparently. And I don't know any mechanics or have a regular dude I go to because I've been lucky as far as mechanical problems go so far I guess. Turns out this is a not-uncommon problem, but the mechanic said he normally sees it in Nissans, not so much with Fords.

Ah well, live and learn.

Our holidays were an utter shitshow from start to finish. Poor daughter sick with a fever that spiked on Christmas eve of 103.5, and was (understandably) inconsolably miserable for the days following including Christmas Day where instead of interacting with family, she maintained a death grip around my neck and refused to open presents. This also seemingly set my two month old son off-kilter as well as he was grumpy and fussy for Christmas Day. All our plans for the whole break were shot to hell by this, and then compounded by my wife coming down with the virus herself and feeling constantly run down...which would be easier for her to deal with if she weren't still breastfeeding an infant (I, sadly, haven't the biology or milk production to do so for her...and she didn't want me using formula to offset it as she was afraid he'd reject the breast afterwards). Trying to entertain two kids, while sick, in our cold Canadian weather (staying inside was not an option after a few days) AND travel to the various far-off places we did get to as the week wore on... with those kids crying in their respective carseats...my gods...

Talk about getting near two weeks off and having none of it feel like a "break" for either of us.

I had 2 weeks off work for the holidays.
The only day I didn't do any work was boxing day.

Yay for holidays!

I feel your pain. Both the boys came down with gastroenteritis two days before my break and recovered a day before it ended. In that time we saw relatives a minimal amount to avoid trying to spread it but still managed to get 3 of them. It's been a long tiring couple of weeks with the washing machine running every night and sometimes in the day too. I went back to work and it feels more like a break that Christmas did. We tried staying in as much as possible as where can you take sick kids that isn't relatives or going to expose a load more to the same bug?

You cannot change your display name back for thirty days?! Dea Gods, what have I done? I'm locked into perpetual festivity! The horror. The horror.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.
