Have a slight feeling I might have bought a dud - mentioned in the happy thread that I found a limited edition copy of Fiends of Nightmaria signed by Erikson and the artist. I've just had their email saying it's "pre-ordered" and needs to arrive from their printer.

Um, why are you printing it? Your website says it's in stock (still) - either you have a certain number of the 300 limited editions or you don't. Surely you're not printing them from scratch?

Ugh, hospital transfer at 1am. To Nottingham.

A lithuanian chap decided to light a cigarette while his shirt was soaked in diesel. And for some reason they wanted to take him to a place 3 hours away, so we had to tube him and take him ventilated in the back of an ambulance.

I don't get on well in these things. I fell out of the back as soon as we finally got there and was so close to chucking up - I managed to hold it together but I must have looked bad as the paramedics took pity on me and stuck me in the front for the trip back. I'm still getting flashes of dizziness two days later. What a stupid job, I really need to go back to the digging.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

@TheRetiredBridgeburner.

Did you order it from the PS Publishing site?

I have ordered the unsigned version from there back in April and thus far nothing.

Send a mail last Friday that I still had not received my order and they replied on Saturday that they did not have it in stock yet....

As far as I know the site stated that it would have been released in April.....

Abbas Kiarostami died yesterday, he was one of the only good Iranian directors. I was talking about his movies with my mother and she mentioned another great Iranian director. A guy named Jafar Panahi, who is banned from writing screenplays, writing books, directing movies, appearing in movies, or exiting Iran because he was trying to make a movie about government torture. These violations of his civil rights are disgusting, but what really makes me mad is that I've been so disconnected from Iranian media since I moved to Canada that I just had no idea something like this was happening.

Having to work super hard while struggling with a rubbish public transport commute can definitely cause a bad day.

Having to work super hard while struggling with a rubbish public transport commute while wet can make you just want the day to end so you can collapse.

Doing all of the above while on an empty stomach can make you want to embrace death

Nah, if it's from PS Publishing, it's legit. They're just notorious for being reeeaaally slow and have a dendency to pretend a book's in stock when they haven't even sent it to the printers yet. Then they email you newsletters telling about how they're just making sure of the quality and having extra proofs printed and shit, just to cover up that they started selling a book even before it was in print. Fiends was supposed to ship in April, I pre-ordered in March, and last week's newsletter said they had just received the signed pages back from SE (which means that NOW it CAN actually go into print, as the signed papers need to be bound together with the other pages). They're a small-scale publisher, so some shenanigans are to be expected, but this is really driving me nuts, them selling a book when it hasn't even been printed yet. At least be honest about it being a pre-order.

Basically, if you ordered from PS Publishíng you'll get your book. At some point this year. When they finally do have something in stock, they're pretty quick with shipping.

Yup, I did. Stated in stock and released in May.

Cheers Puck - I'll hold out for a little bit then and see what happens. Birthday's on the 22nd though so I think it'd be wishful thinking to assume it would be in time.

And yes, that's the most annoying thing - I ordered it based on the fact is says in stock, thinking if it's in stock arriving for the 22nd shouldn't be an issue. *shakes fist*

The only Kiarostami I've seen, sadly, is Ten and it was pretty darn good. I definitely need to catch up on his work, and luckily a few are in the Criterion Collection. That said, I have seen a few Panahi movies, and they're also great. Actually Crimson Gold, directed by Panahi but written by Kiarostami, is one of my all-time favorite movies. I highly recommend it, though it's grim and leisurely paced so your mood would have to be right. Offside is another great Panahi, and quite a bit more accessible. The restrictions placed on him are indeed disgusting and frankly cowardly.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I never was much into Nepali or Hindi popular movies as my older brother, but as I got to be about 22, any time invested in them went to things I found more challenging material and/or physical activities. My overall movie watching rate cratered right about then, but the rate at which I watched South Asian movies took the biggest hit. The modality rarely changed and I got bored.

Iranian cinema has a long history of being challenging and wonderful, despite much greater government restrictions. I can understand the confusion a slow slide away can create within one's self identity. Maybe you'll get the spark back if you try to watch one Iranian movie every couple months - make a mini event of it.

I actually promised my mom I would watch a couple of movies a month with her (she is a big fan of the aforementioned directors' and their style) and I think that's going to be pretty fun.

Split up with my other half. Six and a half years.

It's mutual, and it's very calm and amicable. We've just essentially lived like friends for the best part of a year, and it's taken the frank discussion for us both to admit it. Nobody's fault and nobody's done anything terrible - nothing immediately is going to change. While there'll be some weird for a bit whilever we can do the amicable flatmate thing, we're paying a cheap mortgage on a nice house and the spare cash we're not spending on otherwise more expensive rent gives us space to save and build up a buffer before we take the plunge and sell up.

I am well aware there's going to be some real emotional trauma and it won't stay this calm in the immediate future. But I'm not strictly unhappy. Sad for what it was, but it could have been sadder in so many ways. Seems like the right decision for us both.

Cheers guys - and for the rep messages :Rodeo: much appreciated! Had a terrible night as to be expected so it was nice to wake up to them this morning.

I think now I've had time to process it I'm angry and disappointed, but still not "heartbroken" in any sense and I think that's probably very telling. Work and horse riding class tonight, keep busy!

I'm glad for you that it isn't too traumatising and I hope things work out without too much upset.
