Also.... Fuck.

Apparently it's NEAR a PP place, but the shooting apparently started in a place that helps the developmentally disabled.

I mean what the actual fuck!?

Yeah, I mean a social services place which helps the disabled. That is an extra level of kentucky fried WT-fuckery.

Automatic?? Hadn't heard this. I heard long black rifles.

The police scanner is up...and the reports are disturbing if true with what you said.

Waiting for more information and it to be confirmed.

Media coverage isn't exactly a hotbed of accuracy. Death toll now reported as 3,elsewhere as 20.

Whoa, this, too.. What a surreal day.

Came to gripe about something else, but whoa..

In other news, we got told today at work that our department manager unexpectedly died yesterday. From the flu, possibly. That sounds just bizarre, but while I had nothing really to do with her at work, we'd often talk about how she was not well suited for the job. As someone at work said today, with such news coming in one tends to rethink the stuff one had been saying.

Then I managed to run into my favourite teacher from back at uni at the train station but did not recognize her... We laughed it off, but I wanna dig some big hole and disappear into it.. Especially considering how I've really been sad about not being able to keep in touch with her anymore after graduation.

And now I can't sleep. Such a weird day...

One of the first things I see when I check the news is another mass shooting in the US. I don't understand why the FBI doesn't classify these incidents as domestic terrorism. They clearly are.

So according to the BBC 14 dead, 17 injured. Is that correct? And they shot up a centre for disabled people? That is just dirty.

It's nuts. San Bernardino is the seat of my county, and a lot of people I know are heartsick. One friend even happened to have worked at that agency, though many years ago. But it doesn't feel surreal, really. It really does feel like "more of the same". Which is horrifying.

A question to the Americans here. Given the frequency of shootings in the US, do you feel unsafe when you go out to public areas like malls, cinema halls etc.? I see a large section on the internet responding that the frequency of these things have desensitized them. Is even fear gone?

Despite living in an area that's probably average in the fixings for this kind of stuff*, I have zero day to day fear whatsoever about this. I don't interact with people who I'd piss off in a major way due to my job and my personal life usually has me going to parties and places where the people lean heavily left and are of minority groups.

*I live in upstate New York, which is very white, has tons of guns, and not the best filters on mental health/gun ownership.

As far as I know, not a lot of mass shooting victims know or have antagonized the shooter - for example the theatre shootings. So when you go to the movies, you don't think of that? Interesting.

I am comparing this to two phenomena we have a lot of here - sexual violence and traffic accidents due to rash driving.
From what I have seen, sexual violence si never far from the minds of women especially if they are returning home a bit late.
Regarding traffic accidents, I have often been ona bus that is racing another bus and I remember thinking "Ok, so this is the day I am in a bus accident. Will I die, or just be injured?"

I definitely feel some mild fear in movie theaters, but in general the answer is no.

Assault and sexual assault is probably never far from the mind of an adult woman anywhere in this world. It was a huge "change your view of the world" moment when I truly realized this. I listened to my best friend explain how she picked a place to live and how she walked home at night, while realizing I basically never did any of that outside of some really, really sketchy areas of Kathmandu, and that this series of patterns and way of thinking was nearly baked into her (and most women's) view of the world.

I think what makes it slightly different in the Middle East/South Asia is the speed and frequency with which a person assaulting a woman can become a mob assaulting that woman.

As for shootings at movies, I go so infrequently - and almost never to the big gala movies - that I don't fear that at all. It seems like the shooters target the big movies and I'm always going to things like Inherent Vice or Crimson Peak, which will probably never get attacked. Art house movie people aren't worth the assaulting, not even for deranged mass murderer wannabes.

I do occasionally worry about a paranoid redneck shooting my father when he's on his civil engineering inspection tours out in the countryside of New York. He's kinda white/Iranian looking because some Nepali are like that, but he's got a name that's not "white American" for sure. We've only had one "incident" in which a landowner objected to a beaver dam being pulled down and slightly flooding his land (pulled down because it was blocking a culvert's water flow) and had irate words with another engineer of our company.

What annoys me more are the people on Facebook etc still justifying why their guns shouldn't be taken away. I saw one guy trying to stir up support to boycott a restaurant because they had a no guns policy. A restaurant.

Well obviously. How else are you going to guarantee the rareness of the steak unless you have to shoot it to get to hold still?

But of course. Brown people are always the problem. Hence why we're now going to bomb a whole bunch of them. Pip pip, for the empire and all that.

When Aurora happened it was to far away to worry me at the time however the Lafayette(next major city over from me in Lake Charles) is insanely to close for comfort for me. Thus when we go see SW in a few days it's going to be hard to sit comfortably without wondering if I'm in a show with the next nut job in it. My friend has his permit to carry and I'm considering bringing my .380 since metal detectors aren't installed yet just incase. I'm not saying this to get in debate on if this is effective having armed citizens and I won't respond if I see any replies but it's more peace of mind especially after Lafayette. Who wants to sit in SW wondering if shit is going to go down?

All that said even with the increasing violence day to day I don't worry about this stuff constantly every time I go anywhere. That just wouldn't be healthy but it is always good to be observant and know where your exits are.

Gun Free Zones are deathtraps...

@ Worry: With these stadium seating at movies theaters all ours switched to one fire exit out here in Phoenix in the last decade. Genius!!!

So a girl I know through my job just disclosed today that she has been victim of months of domestic abuse. She is secretly moving out next week and freeing herself from his influence but some of the stuff she told me (controlling/coercive behaviour & some physical abuse as well as emotional manipulation etc) has made me so furious! I'm thankful to be in a job where I can point her in the direction of some help and also use resources to help her move on/protect her from any repercussions, but man I want to go round that douchenozzles house and stamp on his gonads repeatedly.
