Actually messing with my groove: My mom had to take my grandfather to the hospital yesterday around midnight, b/c his hernia popped out. They spent most of the night waitng there, during which time he somehow popped it back in. So when they got to see a DR, some 5 h later, they were told there's nothing to do.

He's seen a surgeon, who referred him for a CAT scan about a month ago, and there's no telling how long that'll take still. Sigh.

Mostly, though I feel terrible for my mom, b/c she's the one doing most of the care for both my grandparents, as their daughter.

There's a place in Toronto that are world experts at the hernia netting operations thingie...which would prevent it from popping out. My mom had a hernia and was referred there (she was denied by them because at the time her lung had recently collapsed and she'd spent too much time in the ICU for them to take the risk on the Op) and they are apparently great. Might be worth a look? You're in the "Saug right?

I do not understand people that overwrite when writing essays and other writing assignments. I have to sell my soul to the devil to reach minimum word specifications and for some reason Professors see the need to have maximum word limitations.
What is wrong with people.

Few people in academia are actually taught the value of concise writing, and when you actually get into the writing "zone" it's easy to just spew your stream of consciousness onto the screen. Also, lots of people don't really edit when they're younger, and a lot of basically redundant stuff gets left in.

As far as I remember, we generally had pg limits, so I'd type my entire paper in single-space, and then when I was done I'd double-space it, instantly making it look like I've written so much more. It was a good feeling.

Mentalist, recalls not so fondly sprinting to campus to hand in freshly-typed stuff for a 4PM deadline. Multiple times.

My dissertation supervisor had an excellent method to teach concise writing. When we were doing coursework, she would assign us weekly readings and on the day of the lecture we would have to hand in a write up exactly 1 A4 page long, font 12, Times New Roman, and no margin shenanigans. She had us email it in. The course grade would be decided by the cumulative grade of all the write ups. After the first two or so lectures everybody had to start learning concise writing. It has helped me immensely

Vet came back to us. They didn't find tumours but it looks like renal failure. He has bladder stones, and fluid build up on the chest and abdomen. Prognosis is 'guarded'.

I suppose it's better than lymphoma at least but still. Being this powerless is maddening.

That sounds almost as scary as the old-school psych methods tutors. The faculty myth was that in the elder ages, to teach proper APA formatting they'd fold your title page in half... and if you didn't have the title line on one side of the crease and your name on the other, it was an auto-fail.

Not to mention the "not one word over 200" in the abstract...

Scary? Oh yeah it was really scary at the beginning. But the class itself was awesome. My supervisor stipulated that the write up could only contain critical opinion, no summaries of the text. Then in the class she asked us to share our opinions. We often got into spirited debates, while she smiled and mediated. Then at the end she would summarise, give her input and finish. By the forth paper I had gotten a hang of the thing, and by the end of 5 months I had seen my writing improve by an order of magnitude. I owe a lot to that course and the hard labour I put in

If you spell the word as "labor", you've saved a character.

Great, now Paris. will this ever end?
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

To answer your question: no.

But yeah it's really awful. Makes me queasy for everyone. The concert being held hostage is apparently an Eagles of Death Metal show. Very surreal.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

40 confirmed deaths, I believe, but the true number is likely higher. Just had big explosions in or nearby the concert hall a minute ago, so I dread to think what happened there. This is just too awful. Sickening.

Additional explosions or the 1st that went off during game?

You've probably read about it elsewhere by now, but, yeah, multiple explosions, suicide bombers who first emptied their guns.

I think the official death is now 127 and most likely to rise.

I've just received word from friends visiting Paris, speaking of a surreal atmosphere with the army presence on the streets and in the city centre.
'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master — that's all.'

Paris.
Social medias reaction.

People.
Western Media.

Jihadi John got pinged yesterday, news all over it. Paris gets attacked.
Why would the military tell the world a figurehead of IS has been hit?? Go about it quietly, don't create more martyrs.

Some people reactions ranging all the way up to 'just nuke the middle east'

The media needs to stop the scare mongering and start reporting actual facts, if every muslim was evil and wanted us dead, we'd be dead, I think the religion has over 1 billion adherants.
This is the crusades in reverse, religious preachers are twisting a religious text to justify murder, with a target audience that probably have never actually read the original.

One post on facebook had quite a good take on it
" Imagine we found life on another planet, and the aliens were all killing each other over who's imaginary friend was better, what would we think??"

All of that. It's becoming something like a car crash I can't stop watching. I am in utter despair at just how little thought people apply in this country, they'd just rather believe everything the fear-mongering media tell them.

Lotta IF's
I can add stupid IF's as well

IF 6000 "assholes" killed 10.75 citizens each (reports say there were 8 terrorists and 129 people died) ONLY 64 500 citizens will die.

No Touchy.
