Install uBlock Origin. I would never let my parents use a computer without an ad blocker.

This one time my dad saw a random ad for teeth whitening strips and decided that that was the best time to make a purchase and get some whiter teeth.

LOL, my mother is the WORST for that. You know those malware pop-ups that tell you to clean your computer cause it's got a virus, or some junk? Or ones that mimic windows warnings? Yeah she FULLY buys into those and phones me asking what happened to her computer and that a "window" said she had a virus and asks if she should pay to have it removed. I told her to touch nothing, click nothing, and I installed an ad-blocker next time I was at her place...and did a malware/adware scorching of the hard drive. But yeah, she's beyond clueless a bout this stuff. I hope she never falls for email phishing scams...but...

A few days ago she phoned me to ask me if "I'd ever used a site called ...aaaamazon to order things?"...I'm pretty sure she could HEAR me facepalming through the phone.

I'm opening myself up to nasty replies but dammit a gum ulcer is giving me nine kinds of hell this week. I haven't had one in like 2 yrs so this one just feels aweful and why do humans constantly feel the unconscious need to bite them? It doesn't help heal and I find myself gnawing on it drawing blood... Grr

Chewing or biting that will only make it worse. If you are getting a lot of ulcers, you may have a vitamin C deficiency. Been eating any fruits lately?

Fruit could be contributing towards them (slightly). I notice that if I eat a lot of sugars in a day (compared to a normal day's intake), they spring up everywhere. Fruit isn't much fun then.

As a preventative, seems like a good idea. Get in those four fruits and six veg a day.

This. ^^

I get them when I OVERINDULGE in Citrus or fruit in general.

And BK, I had one for a week last week, so you are not alone. According to my sister-in-law who is in the health industry, you can get them if your body is fighting off a virus as well. But I am pretty sure this time it was the excessive fruit I was eating (and drinking; Apple juice).

I actually haven't had any fruit regularly in about a month. This is 1st ulcer in yrs and it just seems to hurt way more then what I remember from past ones. It's right next to my canines to so if I'm not gnawing on it my sharp teeth slice into it when I eat or talk.

Actually, it's more likely these are Herpes related ulcers. Herpes virus, while better known for genital warts, also causes "apthous" ulcers in the mouth (aka stress ulcers). Just like the virus that causes the chicken pox (and later gives people the recurring disease called Shingles), Herpes virus hides until you give it a chance to escape (like when you are immunocompromised or just stressed).

Nope. Canker sores have NOTHING to do with the herpes virus. You don't have to have the herpes virus in your system to get a canker sore in the mouth.

EDIT: BK said mouth ulcer. A Mouth ulcer is a canker sore INSIDE the mouth. Different from and caused by a different factor than a cold sore (herpes), and can happen to anyone as opposed to a cold sore.

EDIT: Info from Web MD.

What Causes Canker Sores?

The exact cause of most canker sores is unknown. Stress or tissue injury is thought to be the cause of simple canker sores. Certain foods -- including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (such as lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes, and strawberries) -- can trigger a canker sore or make the problem worse. Sometimes a sharp tooth surface or dental appliance, such as braces or ill-fitting dentures, might also trigger canker sores.

Some cases of complex canker sores are caused by an underlying health condition, such as an impaired immune system; nutritional problems, such as vitamin B-12, zinc, folic acid, or iron deficiency; or gastrointestinal tract disease, such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease.
Are Cold Sores and Canker Sores the Same Thing?

No. Although cold sores and canker sores are often confused with each other, they are not the same. Cold sores, also called feverblisters or herpes simplex type 1, are groups of painful, fluid-filled blisters. Unlike canker sores, cold sores are caused by a virus and are extremely contagious. Also, cold sores typically appear outside the mouth -- usually under the nose, around the lips, or under the chin -- while canker sores occur inside the mouth.

Um, see below from the NIH:

Herpes - oral
Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Oral herpes is an infection of the lips, mouth, or gums due to the herpes simplex virus. It causes small, painful blisters commonly called cold sores or fever blisters. Oral herpes is also called herpes labialis.

Causes
Oral herpes is a common infection of the mouth area. It is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Most people in the United States are infected with this virus by age 20.

After the first infection, the virus goes to sleep (becomes dormant) in the nerve tissues in the face. Sometimes, the virus later wakes up (reactivates), causing cold sores.

Herpes virus type 2 (HSV-2) most often causes genital herpes. However, sometimes HSV-2 is spread to the mouth during oral sex, causing oral herpes.

Herpes viruses spread most easily from individuals with an active outbreak or sore. You can catch this virus if you:

  • Have intimate or personal contact with someone who is infected
  • Touch an open herpes sore or something that has been in contact with the herpes virus, such as infected razors, towels, dishes, and other shared items.
Parents may spread the virus to their children during regular daily activities.

Symptoms
Some people get mouth ulcers when they first come into contact with HSV-1 virus. Others have no symptoms. Symptoms most often occur in kids between 1 and 5 years old.

Symptoms may be mild or severe. They most often appear within 1 to 3 weeks after you come into contact with the virus. They may last up to 3 weeks.

Warning symptoms include:

  • Itching of the lips or skin around mouth
  • Burning near the lips or mouth area
  • Tingling near the lips or mouth area
Before blisters appear, you may have:

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Swollen glands
  • Painful swallowing
Blisters or a rash may form on your:

  • Gums
  • Lips
  • Mouth
  • Throat
Many blisters are called an outbreak. You may have:

  • Red blisters that break open and leak
  • Small blisters filled with clear yellowish fluid
  • Several smaller blisters that may grow together into a large blister
  • Yellow and crusty blister as it heals, which eventually turns into pink skin
Symptoms may be triggered by:

  • Menstruation or hormone changes
  • Being out in the sun
  • Fever
  • Stress
If the symptoms return later, they are usually more mild.

Exams and Tests
Your health care provider can diagnose oral herpes by looking at your mouth area. Sometimes, a sample of the sore is taken and sent to a laboratory for closer examination. Tests may include:

  • Viral culture
  • Viral DNA test
  • Tzanck test to check for HSV

Treatment
Symptoms may go away on their own without treatment in 1 to 2 weeks.

Your health care provider can prescribe medicines to fight the virus. This is called antiviral medicine. It can help reduce pain and make your symptoms go away sooner. Medicines used to treat mouth sores include:

  • Acyclovir
  • Famciclovir
  • Valacyclovir
These medicines work best if you take them when you have warning signs of a mouth sore, before any blisters develop. If you get mouth sores frequently, you may need to take these medicines all the time.

  • Antiviral skin creams may also be used. However, they are expensive and often only shorten the outbreak by a few hours to a day.
The following steps can also help make you feel better:

  • Apply ice or a warm washcloth to the sores to help ease pain.
  • Wash the blisters gently with germ-fighting (antiseptic) soap and water. This helps prevent spreading the virus to other body areas.
  • Avoid hot beverages, spicy and salty foods, and citrus.
  • Gargle with cool water or eat popsicles.
  • Rinse with salt water.
  • Take a pain reliever such as acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Outlook (Prognosis)
Oral herpes most often goes away by itself in 1 to 2 weeks. However, it may come back.

Herpes infection may be severe and dangerous if:

  • It occurs in or near the eye
  • You have a weakened immune system due to certain diseases and medications

Possible Complications
Herpes infection of the eye is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. It causes scarring of the cornea.

Other complications of oral herpes may include:

  • Return of mouth sores and blisters
  • Spread of the virus to other skin areas
  • Bacterial skin infection
  • Widespread body infection, which may be life threatening in people who have a weakened immune system due to atopic dermatitis, cancer, or HIV infection

When to Contact a Medical Professional
Call your health care provider if you have:

  • Symptoms that are severe or that don't go away after 2 weeks
  • Sores or blisters near your eyes
  • Herpes symptoms and a weakened immune system due to certain diseases or medicines

Prevention
Here are some tips to prevent mouth sores:

  • Apply sunblock or lip balm containing zinc oxide to your lips before you go outside.
  • Apply a moisturizing balm to prevent the lips from becoming too dry.
  • Avoid direct contact with herpes sores.
  • Wash items such as towels and linens in boiling hot water after each use.
  • Do not share utensils, straws, glasses, or other items if someone has oral herpes.
Do not have oral sex if you have oral herpes, especially if you have blisters. You can spread the virus to the genitals. Both oral and genital herpes viruses can sometimes be spread, even when you do not have mouth sores or blisters.

QuickTidal does have a couple of good points about which I am wrong:

Canker sores (non-Herpes sores) do seem to be more common within the mouth, and are called "Aphthous" Ulcers. I misused that term in relation to herpes as far as I can tell.

Thanks for double checking me QT. I did get some things wrong, and I appreciate having it pointed out so I can be correct in the future.

Just don't eat any chilly or extra spicy stuff. It will feel like you have put a lit matchstick into your mouth. Trust me, Indian experience here

Depends on your situation. When I was at uni we'd often be round at someones house making a racket and think nothing of it. When my neighbours a few years back started pulling all nighters in their garden when I had work and a baby to look after... not so fun.

I hope Kansas City is happy getting into the World Series because one of their fans interfered with play.

Seriously, their entry into the Series will forever be tainted because some shit decided to reach down past the wall and catch a double (forcing the NYC reviewers to call it a HR) and then fucking LIE about it. Goddamn, never was a baseball fan so reviled as this guy.

I will now be rooting Hard for the Mets in the WS.
