There are good possibilities for a career where I work and my position is considered, all told, to be fairly low in the system. Trouble is, I don't think I want to have a career here. Further up is basically the same work but with marginally better pay. I need to get out, but I have no idea what I really want to do and this is safe and the pay is good.

The person I'm seeing is having a nasty case of insomnia, it's been going for 3 weeks now. I think it might be a symptom of her anxiety, which is also quite frequent with her. Anyone have any advice? Besides going to a doctor-I realise anything else is a long shot, but she's not well off at the moment and probably couldn't afford it. She's also not interested in trying sleeping pills so yeah, looking for anything at this point in time.

This is good advice. See if wherever you are offers anything. It's not something that you want to be dealing with alone if you don't have to (obviously don't involve others without her knowing though).

If you're talking to her about it, make sure she knows you're trying to understand and help and that if she thinks what you're saying is missing the point then she should tell you, but it's just difficult for someone not in that exact situation to know what it feels like. There's a lot of misunderstanding about things like anxiety and it can so easily make things worse - good communication is pretty key (which includes knowing there's a time and place and not making people feel pressured etc).

Seems pretty obvious written down, but I've seen people fuck this up so much compared to people getting it right.

You might also want to check out Amph's advice about counseling in regards to yourself. They can help you know how best to be supportive. As well as that, stuff like this can be really taxing on the supportive people like yourself, and it can be hard to find people to talk to about that aspect of things. It gives you someone to talk to who will really understand that, and it can save a lot of stress and exhaustion.

Hope everything works out for her and for you :)

Oh, and you should ignore Abyss' advice, but that's a given :)

In these few weeks I have grown to intensely dislike psychology and how it represents the human experience. I think I'll stick to cultural anthropology and statistics.
