Given that you live in Canada and it's friggin' winter, the $500 leather jacket should only see usage if it's a special occasion. Slips, falls, stains, salt and tears are all too common in the winter and can beat a nice item of clothing like that to shreds very quickly.

Get a Carhartt or a ski jacket to wear around most days. Almost everything slides off or doesn't get through to damage the jacket.

in my defence, the jacket was a gift.
and it's warm AND decently light.

and I velue the lightness of a jacket first and foremost. I absolutely despise those winter monstrosities that make you feel like you're covered in levels of styrofoam.

My data for this experiment is AWFUL. I mean, sure, the detector we used is cheaper, more efficient, but IT HAS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE, JUST GOD-AWFUL, JANEANE GAROFALO ON HER PERIOD, ON COCAINE, WHILE DRYHUMPING KEITH RICHARDS, AWFUL RESOLUTION.

So basically what I'm trying to say is that I need to start over.
