OK, what was it in regard to then? Is there some sort of back story to the remark?

By the by, that's one thing I really can't fathom about facebook - why the hell connect/friend/whatever with people you don't like? Can't you just set your profile up to only be accessible to people you accept?

Yeah, it's about Vicroads not marking the minute-silence for our soldiers:

VicRoads U-turn on 'shocking' Remembrance Day policy
Megan Levy
November 11, 2010 - 12:21PM

VicRoads has been forced to make an embarrassing apology today after it was revealed the organisation did not mark Remembrance Day for fear of offending people.

VicRoads chief executive Gary Liddle said he had personally asked staff to hold a minute's silence at 11am today and made an "unequivocal apology" for any offence the policy may have caused.

Earlier today, the organisation said in a statement that it did not observe a minute's silence because it was "conscious of possible different cultural issues" and didn't "wish to cause offence to anyone".

The revelation was met with astonishment by the Victorian branch of the RSL and Felix Sher, whose son Private Gregory Sher was killed last year in a rocket attack in Afghanistan.

"I'm absolutely shocked," Mr Sher told radio station 3AW.

"I can't believe that any organisation would behave in this way.

"In most countries overseas there's a minute's silence to observe and people stop dead whatever they're doing and just contemplate and consider those who have given their lives to allow us to have the freedom that we do have."

Roads Minister Tim Pallas said he was "aghast" to learn of the policy this morning and ordered that it was reversed immediately.

Mr Liddle took responsibility for the decision. He did not specify whether it was feared staff or customers would be offended by holding a minute's silence.

"We never intended to offend anyone by this practice and if we have we sincerely apologise," he told 3AW.

"I guess we saw that we were trying to respect everyone's right to make a choice how to [commemorate] the day."

Mr Liddle said his grandfather had fought at Gallipoli and he had taken the public criticism to heart.

"We've clearly heard the community and what they've said today," he said.

Victorian RSL president David McLoughlin said he was astounded.

"Remembrance Day is not only Remembrance Day in Australia, it's all around the world," he said.

"The 11th day of the 11th hour of the 11th month is when the Great War stopped and irrespective of whether you're on the coalition side, the British side, the Australian side or even on the German side, it all came to an end.

"I just cannot believe that there would be a group of people, particularly in a government department, that would decide that we weren't going to do it for fear of offending people.

"Those people have come to live in our country because of what we've got and what we can offer to them as a way of life and all of that goes back to where it all started in the contribution made by our people and we remember that on Remembrance Day. I'm amazed."

Mr Pallas said he had taken steps this morning to ensure VicRoads properly acknowledged the country's war dead on Remembrance Day.

"I was aghast and in fact I just couldn't believe the suggestion that this practice was occurring," he told 3AW.

"As a consequence of that, I've taken steps to make sure that the practice is stopped.

"For whatever reason, no matter how well intentioned it was, it's wrong."

I agree that it is ridiculous that people don't observe a silence for fear of offending others. That's just stupid. If it is part of your countries thing to do something like that, just do it if you want to. If someone gets offended because you are choosing to remember and honour those who fought for the country you live in, they have the problem not you.

However that guy on Facebook went about it completely the wrong way...

For fucks sake, we observe 11/11 even in capitalist, god-forsaken America. What do we have to do to actually recognize the millions that fought?

Perhaps their causes were untrue (Soviet Russia...) but ultimately these men were the pinnacle of bravery. Shall we hold a moment, even in holiday, for them? Yes. Were they upholding imperialist ambitions? Who the hell cares? They were patriots regardless of the side they were on. November the 11th is a day to realize that the squabbles we may have exceed our capacity for malice.

Novermber 11th, for the Allies, for the Central Powers, who cares? Men died, and that is reason enough.

Men died valiantly, in service of their ideals and their nations. In the millions. And not honoring the cessation of that bloodshed is criminal at worst, and delinquent at best.

Fuck those guys, sincerely, with a rake.

Is tired of Australian culture and tradition being walked over due to Political Correctness. Somehow it's okay to celebrate Chinese New Year, hanukkah, ramadan and other non-traditional/non-Australian holidays in the name of multiculturalism but we can't celebrate and acknowledge our own bloody holidays because it may offend some people. Screw you Vic Roads! And before anyone tries to tell me it's because it 'glorifies war' how the hell is remembering the poor bastards that have died for our country equal 'war is good'? You're logic is astounding!

....also on a far less significant note - I regret connecting to Xbox Live - the new update has turned the dashboard white and super bright. Gamer eyes are adjusted to dark, dim light - the white light, it burns!!! Damn you Microsoft!

Having found out, in a very depressing way, that my stomach has fortitude of a six year old's. If someone asks me why I went vegetarian, I'll tell them it's because of my convictions rather than admit I'm a sissy.
Kif: Sir, remember your course correction?
Captain Zapp: No.
Kif: Well, it's proving somewhat more suicidal than we'd initially hoped.

Performance art.

I have only very rarely been so disgusted with humanity as I was tonight.
I saw the end of civilization tonight, and it was a bunch of pretentious art grads.
Seriously tonight I have seen:

-People holding eggs in one hand and a heavy object in the other while blindfolded while someone else put ice cubes in their shirts.

-A girl having thrown nuts and bolts on the ground, look pained, rearrange them. Apply lipstick, then floss her teeth, to pull out eggs from her pantyhose to break them on her face.

-Another girl who sat four people down. Took a plant with closed flowers that had hand lotion in them. Crush them, and smear them all over the faces of those she sat down.

-A video that was nothing but a random collection of scenes badly put together.

-A guy with a camera that made different screeching noises based on the colours it registered.

-A guy in a shower that got covered in water mixed with mustard and ketchup.

-A girl who made origami swans while putting pebbles into her mouth and then passing a thread through her hand and the swans to hang them from her flesh.

I left after that.

I had enough. I was angry. I wanted everyone in that place to die. I wanted all to know what kind of disgust, hate, loathing, rage they had brought out of me.
I wanted them all to suffer.
I'm bloody serious. These people are performance grads. While being a historian has been deemed useless by Dolorous Menhir, I'm sure even he would agree that you do not need to go through 3 to 4 years of university and pay thousands of dollars to do what I saw tonight.
That this is common place is bad enough, that they're pretentious enough to think what they did was artistic or worth any form of merit is beyond me.
Had I not left then and there I may very well have ended up ruining the evening (as mine is ruined) just to make a point, which is what was lacking all night.

Never again. I don't care if they promise me godhood I'm not sitting through that kind of crap again.

Just showed up for work and instead of the lady who was supposed to be here training me, it's some guy who has never worked this shift before and doesn't really know what's going on. Shit. I'm training so I don't know what is gong on either.
