The horror, the horror...

"I was just scrolling online, trying to find somewhere to escape the heat," [...] "By the end of the day, you're delirious," she said. "You don't know who you are anymore."

She said staff had been getting through shifts by draping cold, wet towels around their necks and huddling near portable fans.

Wife's surgery got pushed back to tomorrow.

Dunno if I mentioned but she's snapped basically every ligament in her left foot so she needs a pretty big pins and plates op to sort it.

Does she have proprioception issues?

There are so many hidden costs with buying a home. What we thought we could buy a month ago is VERY different than what we can actually buy once every. single. thing. is mathed out. It is...sad.

You're also human.

Oh and wouldn't you believe it amidst all of this those stupid Reform bastards are trying to 'undeclare' the climate emergency.

102 degrees Fahrenheit here (about 39 C here). I still haven't turned the air conditioner on this year. Day two of my Fourth of July fast.

Turn on the ac! Spoil yourself.

Well turns out it wasn’t just hot, my ac is broken so that’s why it wasn’t cooling, apparently it’s considered an actual emergency (it’s not that hot) and I could have demanded they repair it last night, which seems crazy to me. Anyway they showed up this morning to take a look and now the hvac guys are coming to repair it.

AC makes you weak. I am weaker because of it. We didn’t perfect inside for nothing though.

AC has made designers lazy and people's tolerance for heat lower, as well as massively heating cities.

Granted average temps are higher but traditional building design in the hottest parts of Spain (like Seville) from hundreds of years ago kept much cooler than any modern building will be without AC on

Good thing we can build all the new buildings we need to deal with the ongoing climate disaster quickly and without worries of shortcuts and corruption

Oh wait

At least I've seen less people go on about 1976 this time, since it's dropped out of the top five hottest British years ever and all those years are post 2000
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Seems like teleoperation (which can apparently even be safely conducted from overseas), automation, and modular construction could help speed it up and make it cheaper.

Though it seems more likely that people will take the easy and irresponsible path by installing air conditioners...

I've gotten through the heat wave here---despite several consecutive days when the high was 103 degrees---without turning on my air conditioning.

But according to my thermometer the temperature in my new apartment hasn't gone over 72 degrees. And the air actually feels a bit cool on my bare skin. Being half underground helps, and they did extensively renovate the Victorian era building (my old apartment in the same complex used to get very hot, and was also draughty), but I guess I must be benefiting from the air conditioning being blasted in adjacent areas of the building (even though the apartment is adjacent to the outside on three sides).

After being an immigrant for over 6 years I am starting to have to deal with the fact that my South African friendships are not the same anymore. 6 years of long distance have taken a toll and they aren't the same anymore and I don't think they can ever be the same again. Also the new friendships I have made as an adult in America are not the same either. People have jobs, wives, kids, older more important friendships. I have friends but the weight behind them just feels less.

The difference between being invited because someone is having a BBQ and someone having a BBQ because they invited you.

A lot of famous actresses are much closer to my age then I ever realized and it feels weird. A young boy lusting after an unattainable sexy women was just part of growing up. Its not that I am lusting after famous actresses at my age anymore, but now that I realize that Anne Hathaway is only a few years older than me it feels weird even in hindsight. 15 and 20 is worlds apart, 40 and 45 isn't. Im not sure I can express in words why this feels so bizarre but it does. Also I realize these actresses were much younger than I thought at the time and acting in roles that I would now consider inappropriate with hind sight too.

Also why do modern movie stars all look like kids. Bruce Willis was 33 in Die Hard. He felt and looked like an action star. Timothy Chamalet is not out of place playing a 16 year old paul atreides at 30 and Tom Holland at 30 makes a convincing 18 year old Peter Parker. Tom Holland as Nathan Drake in uncharted felt off. I dont think its just that I am older, all modern actors look overly youthful? Angelina Jolie was 26 in Tomb raider, Zendaya is 29 playing high school student in euphoria.

AC has made me weaker its true. Im not sure me not using it accomplishes anything other than my discomfort though.
