David Lynch and Bob Ueker both died.

Both related to their lifelong smoking. But Ueker made it to 90, Lynch was only 78.

Gosh dang. I mostly know Uecker from comedy, not sports, but he was a really funny guy.
Lynch -- dunno what to say. He was a master. TP: The Return is straight up one of the best things I've ever seen, so to go out on that note is as good as one could ask for. I went to college in L.A. and got to see a sneak preview of Mulholland Drive on campus. Aside from Dune, that was the first Lynch thing I'd ever seen (didn't watch Twin Peaks during its original run), and I was mesmerized. And while not strictly horror, it gave me the single biggest jump scare I've ever had.

They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I accept that he was one of the greats, but I dislike ALL his work. I've never gotten the attraction. I've seen at least 4 or 5 of his films and the only one I can come close to stomaching is DUNE. Twin Peaks made me angry.

His movies were much closer to like... alt reality in which aliens attempt to be people than they were people doing story things we're more used to.

Cool things, totally get how people bounce off them.

That's a REALLY succinct way to describe them Amph. Well said. All my film friends are bereft at losing him.

I've just realised I don't think I've ever seen anything he's made (I think I watched Dune when I was a teenager - did it have Sting in it?)

What's a good starting point? Mulholland Drive?

My film friends all say BLUE VELVET is the best place to start.

Fair warning though, it's deeply fucked up....sexual and violence content abound really.

I'd say watch The Straight Story. It's not like a key to his other more art-house movies or anything like that, it's just really good and wholesome.

I’ll bet you don’t even know what truculent means?

Bob: Sure I do, if I borrow your truck, it’s a truculent.

Time for a rewatch of Twin Peaks.

There's a Trumper at my work (remember I'm Canadian) and he will literally spout right wing talking points I see them get fed days after they are fed them...

Anyways, we were talking about his hatred of the Carbon Tax in Canada, and he ranted about us doing stuff about the climate while every other country doesn't. I told him that many other countries have taxes on carbon, he pivoted to telling me places like China get to pullute willy nilly while we are taxed...so I told him that actually China has decreased their emissions drastically with their push for clean energy (which is true according to CREA and the IPCC)...and he said "Oh you're a good little communist aren't you"

I.....dude...like I say another country has been cleaning up their emissions and your only reply to me is that I must be a communist?

What the actual fuck happened to this country and the people in it...the Sinophobia aside, saying anything positive about China makes me a communist? Good gods...

I know a few people who think trump is great - I live on a tiny island in the middle of the Irish sea. Weirdly all the people I know here who like him are African. Must be a conservative Christian thing. They think he's been hard done by and a lot of the stuff in the press is just over blown.

As Cause likes to quote from Trevor Noah's routine... Trump is our first African president.

(And by "our" I now mean the world's---at least in terms of what he can destroy! If not the solar system---quite yet... that might be Go*-Emperor Robo-Trump, the First Infinite Immortal.)

It's just so deeply ingrained in them...and the gishgalloping so he can't be nailed down to one point is always intense:

Example:

He starts about the carbon tax, I ask if he voted for Conservative Stephen Harper, who brought in the carbon tax in form and function, and he dithers on whether he did, I say that the carbon tax was given the full throated approval at the time by Pierre Pollievre (the con guy trying to be our new PM by ranting about how terrible the Carbon tax is) and that it's only affecting the consumers now because the Conservative premiers (ours included; Doug Ford) removed Cap & Trade (which was the previous carbon price system where the Corporations handled the excess cost of their emissions, not us) to benefit their corporate buddies, and he pivots away from that by saying Canadians are too deeply taxed, and I say the carbon tax is rebated (we get checks four times a year for more than we paid at the pump) and he pivots to telling me that groceries are too expensive as a result of the carbon tax on truckers bring food to the stores and I said Truckers are actually exempt from the tax in Canada and he pivots to telling to "say that next time you go buy butter" and I said that's due to grocery barons like Galen Weston gouging us for profit, not the carbon tax, and he pivots to criminals ripping off stores and that he's not going to sit by and say nothing while those thieves make prices go up and that there is no law enforcement on them, and I say that the law in Ontario is run by the Premier, who is a Conservative and he says "Bail is federal!" and then walked out of the room...

That whole back and forth happened in the span of 30 seconds. HE KNOWS how to gishgallop so you can't actually have discussion with him about the accuracy of his statements or mine...

It's wildly frustrating and I usually try to avoid it with him...but my gods he upset me this morning with all that.

Got a smart doorbell for the new house and cannot for the life of me find the breaker that kills the power to it. I know that doorbells are usually wired to a small transformer which I think I have located, but none of the breakers have shut it off. We had an electrician come and do some work on lights in our place and he said that a doorbell is not a high voltage and even still hooked up I would not get much of a shock if I touched both wires...but I have no interest in finding out...it's driving me batty as I'd really like to install this not just for safety reasons, but also because the old doorbell is super wonky and half the time it makes a low drone after it's rung and I have to toggle the button to get it to stop, so I'm sure the connection in the chime box is probably fucked anyways...

Sigh. Home ownership comes with a bunch of extra shit.

He's not wrong

At worst go to doorbell transformer and drop out the dc side

Send me a pm I can talk you through the whole thing if needed

UPDATE: I found the breaker the transformer was wired to. It was attached to the Kitchen Fridge plug (which I hadn't tried, even though I thought I had), so then it was just a matter of swapping out the old doorbell and the new one and the chime box re-wiring.

So all good. Thanks for the offer of support though. It was pretty easy once I started to do it.

The inauguration of Fuckwit and Co has been all over the news this morning. The books and movies lied to us - evil wins. :(

Watching bits and pieces, why is this running through my head? Maybe because it's a song about looking forward and keeping your spirits up during hard times?

Ha! Here is one of the comments:

"This song was created for today 1/20/2025. I just need to keep feeling fine. Be kind to yourself and each other."

As an aside, Americans really should learn to use a proper date format.

QT, NASA just called. Every time your doorbell rings the toilet flushes on the ISS. They ask that you please rewire it.
