IgNobel award here I come!

I will need access to 3 girls for triplicate testing and 3 boys as a control. I will need access to pure cooties as a positive control.

Actually this will be huge. Ill need more human test subject samples children to perform double blind infection tests. How quickly do the cooties spread. At what age does one begin to manifest the cooties. Can cooties be cured? I think I could burn a good few million dollars on this.

I do, occasionally, mourn the fact that I basically cannot drink alcohol anymore, at least not more than half a glass of wine. I work for a company that imports wine and we've got a company meet up/fete thing this weekend. I've always pretended to be busy on this weekend but went last year to test my social resilience and we got served the solid number of 16 wines, first at a tasting and then during dinner. Now, I AM curious and want to try all of them, so it will be difficult to keep it at one or two mouthfuls if they repeat that, which sucks, as due to working there I have developed a taste for wine.

This new team that one of my best friends put together with his co-workers has some really out of shape players.

They all seem like good guys, and there's no attitude problems, which is a blessing. But I'm still kind of frustrated, because even though i'm in decent shape, I can't carry the entire defense on my own.

This could end up a very frustrating season.

Long night shift.

Stabbing victim we worked on from about midnight; too much indecision about several aspects of her care, and other aspects I shouldn't really put online I guess, as she died a short while ago.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Nah. I just came home and the kids were bouncing up and down wanting to go out, so out we went. It took my mind off it a bit, but it's starting to hit the news now and don't really want to look.

Thanks. Work doesn't offer much at the moment - due to government cuts and underfunding and understaffing, the hospital has been put under special measures, while they decide it's future.

One of the delays treating our patient last night was directly because 2 years ago they shipped all our vascular surgery elsewhere, so when we get things like this the choice is an immediate transfer to somewhere with the right specialities - or trying to treat on site with what we have. Transferring an unstable patient isn't an option, but if the process of stabilising takes too long there's little hope of a positive outcome. It's really shitty and little we can do about it.

We don't know if she would have made it if we'd moved her elsewhere. It's too easy afterwards to overthink it or wonder what the team could have done better, but I guess any blame lies firmly with the person that stabbed her.

Yeah. Turns out my asthma meds and alcohol don't get along in the weirdest way. You'd think that since alcoholic beverages contain histamines they would cause me breathing or allergic reactions, but NOPE, my family's genetics say I get leg cramps from hell from that combination. My mother gets it, too, from different meds.

@Traveller: Hope you can find some time to deal with it even without help from work.

The underfunding, understaffing, and increasing outright closures of hospitals over the last decade seems like this totally neglected national emergency.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

It certainly seems part of a bigger plan. This hospital covers a wide area though and if they decide to keep closing areas of it the next closest are 50 miles away. Since vascular moved, your chances of survival if you have a leaking aneurysm are virtually nothing now - we used to get them in, up to theatre and repaired just in time. Now they have to get taken an extra 45 miles, they don't make it at all.
Or worse, they get brought in, are diagnosed in a + e, and are then basically given pain relief and left.

@Puck thank you, I had a few glasses with my wife last night and talked about it and it def helped, she works there too and understands.

Don't guess! Know it for a fact.

Id like to say just do your best and leave everything else behind when the job is done but I know it doesn't work like that. Still its in no way our fault

__________________________________________________________________________

I have realized I have a terrible anxiety over phone calls. I just don't like to speak to people on the phone. Why cant people just text. I was meeting a friend for dinner last night. I was looking forward to it. We had a great chat over dinner no problems. Still when he called me an hour before dinner to finalize the plans I seriously considered letting it ring until he hung up and then texting him back. I don't know why. I just hate talking on the phone. I find texting so much easier and to the point. Maybe its I just don't like giving my full attention to a phonecall.

Forgot to add. My country has entered a technical recision. So government has finally decided to acknowledge the poor economy and high unemployment by announcing a stimulus package. It constist of 6 points. The first 4 points are literally to undo legislation that they passed that harmed the economy and that everyone warned them would harm the economy. They don't phrase it this way of course. Step 5 is to move around 50 billions rand (3% of total government spending) from some budgets to other budgets. Step 6 is to magic into existence a 400 billion infrastructure fund (25% of yearly government budget).

Steps 1-4

1) Remove visa requirements that caused tourism to drop by about ten percent or so. Any minor entering south Africa must be accompanied by both parent's and they must have the unabridged birth certificate. You must show it to your countries embassy before you leave. A country such as India with a billion people and huge land area requires people to go to the single embassy in person. Government was told the requirements were too strict and it would impact tourism. Divoreced parents etc can have problems.

2) Scrapping the idea to separate the petroleum industry from the mining and energy portfolio. Reasons they wanted to unknown. Failed to passs new legislation to govern it for years leading to policy uncertainty and loss of investment. They have reversed the decision and put it back where it was. We ran in cirlces for years for no reason.

3) Government will review the cost of doing business. An incredibly broad and meaningless statement but it basically means removing the red tape they created that weakens new business opening doors

4) roll out of spectrum. We are announcing that we will roll out spectrum nd doing so will reduce data prices etc. Government has been promising this for a decade. We have missed our deadlines and the international deadline to migrate to digital TV. Why? Because government has literally been trying to work out how to benefit the most from the corruption and back dealing that is possible.

I think I bungled the job interview I had today. Didn't have time to read as deeply about the company as I'd have liked to, which I guess always comes off as only wanting the job to have the job (which, to be fair, is true for me). At least they were impressed with my English :( Still, that was supposed to go better. Ah well, we shall see.

I know what you mean, I feel pretty much the same. I try to take phone calls at least from people I know, but the temptation is certianly there. Also, I have in the recent past let the phone ring when I knew the next step would be that they'd just write me an email, which they could've done to begin with, anyway. Though I make an effort to always pick up the phone at work (it doesn't ring very often, anyway), because professionalism hurr durr.

I did have an interesting conversation on that topic the other day though. I ended up sitting next to one of my work's product managers during dinner at the company meet up last weekend, and I don't remember how, but the topic turned to picking up the phone and how he never picks up the phone at work unless he's expecting the call. The reasons was that talking on the phone lures you into wasting time with pleasantries and makes it much more difficult to say no, when emails allow you to get to the point directly and you can just tell the recipientthat you don't want to buy their shit, full stop. In contrast, the product manager whose office is right beside the one I also have my work place in is on the phone ALL the time and keeps wasting his time by talking endless pleasantries, then complains that he never gets anything done. This kind of validated my dislike for phone calls, to be honest.

I'm split on the phone thing. As a rule i pretty much never answer unless i'm expecting the call and/or recognize the caller ID (and feel like speaking w the caller). That said, there are times when picking up the phone is just more effective than spending half an hour carefully wording an email, or firing off a text that just doesn't make the point. Also, less hard evidence.
