Wow 3 people on this forum have had experiences with pedophiles! That is messing with my groove. Another reminder that its more common than you would like to think.
Fantastic that all of you managed to fight against them.
It's disturbingly more common than most prod think, even with the media coverage it usual garners. An awful awful lot of it isn't reported because it's a family member involved or a close family friend
And even then, often it doesn't make news because 1) it isn't high profile, 2) it's not newsworthy, 3) it doesn't make it to court because the child can't say 'penis' or 'vagina' and a person can't be charged for touching a 'woohoo' or 'peepee'.
Seriously, the greatest thing a parent can do to prevent abuse/ongoing abuse is to use proper anatomical names for sexual organs and to teach body safety to their kid from 2 years old. Stats show it drastically reduces the chance of molestation and grooming because the child is seen as 'high risk'. The more vocal the child is about body safety the better. The fact that most perpetrators are family members or close friends means you should actually advertise your child's body safety awareness. We have our family body safety rules on the wall in two prominent places in our house. We also emailed all of our friends and family an email explaining that we were teaching Rip body safety, explaining what our body safety rules involved, and asking people not to use words that weren't anatomically correct.
As for teaching, we have taught body agency since birth, mostly through books such as No Means No, Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept, Who Has What? etc. We never force physical contact and applaud when he chooses to say no to a hug or a kiss.
Seriously, if your kid doesn't say 'vulva', 'vagina', 'anus', or 'penis' you really should address that asap. It's not about propriety or decorum- it can literaly save them from being abused.
Edit: there's a lot of statistics on this out there but it's almost 3am and I can't be bothered going to my pc where I have them bookmarked.
