Make good use of that always dependable surrogate parent - tv!

That only works for so long though!

WHAT?! I've made a serious miscalculation.

My boy has found my Futurama dvds and insisted on putting them on this morning and I wasn't about to stop him, but now they've had lunch they're racing up and down and throwing themselves headfirst into the sofa, so I'm going to have to get them outside to the park in a minute - my girl wants to go and play football.

I've not managed any sleep yet as mrs T took herself off to bed about an hour after I got home. Bit dozy now but a cold trip out should wake me up a bit!

Thanks Tiste. And Maark.
Yeah I've seen loads of work in those places mentioned. Devon and Surrey all seem to have plenty work. There's a mclaren plant in Surrey that I nearly applied for. Bit of a hike though. Some in Devon too. Tiverton I think it was.
Funnily enough Tiste I entered the recruitment process for BAE systems in Newcastle (Washington) when they opened the new facility (ironically enough it's BAE's old factory that we inhabit now) but I didn't see it through. Kind of wish I had now.
Got 4 potential leads on the go now, all local, even if 2 of them are about an hours drive. Fingers crossed.

Also, I got my letter on Thursday night. 29 people in my section, 5 to be removed.
I can almost hear Oponns coin spinning in my head.....

Massively depressed. Been dreading the first day of my 33 year all week long, and now it has arrived, cold and alone with the promise of returning family (and the host of problems associated). Feel trapped by the day, unable to make it go away and just hoping it doesn't hurt as much as earlier this week.

My 14year old cat has stopped eating. :)

Took her to the vet, he took some blood. Waiting on the results. In the meantime she's hungry but won't eat.

We find out tomorrow if the blood work says anything, or if we need to get X-rays or further tests.

Aside from one or two visits to the emerg vet (once for fleas, once because she was throwing up bile) she's never had any serious issues over the years.

I hope she's going to be okay.

Insomnia insomnia insomnia insomnia insomnia. In-som-ni-a. In-som-ni-a.

And between now (6am ish) and 3am my brain decided to make up a song about insomnia that is basically the word "insomnia" sung repeatedly to the tune of "Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree". It is fortunate that I don't have acccess to firearms this Monday morning.

While I do sympathise Mez, I'm also kind of envious - at the thought of being able to lie in bed undisturbed for that long. Not the insomnia part though! Have you tried some decent headphones and some podcasts or music? Whenever I try and listen to anything in bed before going to sleep it sends me right off. (Welcome to Night Vale is great, but it totally sends me to sleep if I listen in bed - it must be Cecils voice.)

I'm just so tired.. I get woken up, every morning, at about 5.45. Sometimes 6. My boy is adorable, I love him to bits, but every morning he comes padding in, and either lumps on me or more usually needs a wee, so I have to get up right away. This morning it was 5.15.

I guess I shouldn't complain, he sleeps through the night mostly; I just can't remember what is like to go to sleep until I wake up on my own. Really, it's been.. months.

My morning coffee is a lifesaver.

QT, hope your cat is ok.

I have absolutely no problem getting off to sleep - I am out like a light, usually by 10pm. It is staying asleep that is a problem. At some point between 3am and 5am I wake up completely refreshed, wide awake, brain on full power and there is absolutely no getting back to sleep. I have had stress insomnia before and it's not that. It would be ok as I am getting enough hours to get by but on work days by early afternoon I'm a mess. If I'm with a client or in the office I get to a point where I can't remember basic words and am a danger on the road driving home. It is better than it was, it was 1 to 2am a couple of months back.

Loads of people have it in pregnancy apparently. I think it is a hormonal shift so that your natural waking time gets screwed up. I may as well kiss sleep goodbye now anyway but it's getting boring tiptoeing around trying to let Mr PigDog sleep.

Weird historical knowledge input here: Waking up and doing something active in the middle of the night isn't actually abnormal. The 8 hours sleep, 8 hours work, 8 hours play routine is a modern construct.

In some countries, in ye olden days, out on the farm, when the nights were long and they didn't have TVs and Radio, it wasn't unusual that people went to bed early, woke up in the middle of the night and spent a couple hours eating, reading, some handiwork, etc. Then they'd eventually fall asleep again. This kind of behavior has also been observed in other animals.

I don't know how strict or regulated your work schedule is but have you considered sleeping during the day? I assume you are working some kind of cushy lab monkey desk job. Get permission to take a 2 hour siesta somewhere dark and calm, perhaps?

Otherwise, maybe go to bed at 8-9 and when you wake up try to not stress out about the awake part and just relax? Half the problems with insomnia is stressing out over having insomnia.

EDIT: Here's something that will put you to sleep: https://en.wikipedia...Segmented_sleep

If you take the articles suggestion you could perhaps engage in a crime spree of petty theft. As a rotund, flat footed burglar tumbling into innocent peoples kitchens and eating pregnant food.

Thanks for the support all, blood work is fine. My wife is now taking her back in to do x-rays to see what else could be causing her to not eat.

Had my truck broken into for the 4th time at some point this weekend while I was out of state. Since I don't keep anything of any real value in there (did I mention this is my 4th break in?) They clearly had nothing to steal. But those little fuckers did manage to spread what little I did have in my truck out in order to verify there was nothing worth taking anyways. Talk about insulting. The one thing they may have taken is my broken fossil watch that would have cost me $100 to fix but wasn't worth $100 in the first place... So there's one less thing to throw out. I suppose this could probably go in the "What's making you happy" thread because i've been laughing at the stupidity of it all but those jerks left my hula girl on the floor where any less picky thief could have stolen it and i'm still kinda bent out about that. Jerks.

Wife is home as of last night after being in Seattle 2 weeks with the kids. I am not sure I like where this is going. My eldest has developed some new delay tactics and insecurities (one of which requires mommy to sleep with him ?). And things around here are awkward. I am mildly worried about the kids, mostly that their mom will allow the instability to weaken their own stability. She is not organized and firm at baseline. Have to wait and see what the week holds as it unfolds.

Sleeping during the day..... looks at commute schedule.... laughs cynically

But seriously, the idea of going to bed early and getting up at unusual times is a good one. I used to do this earlier, where I went to sleep at around 9.30-10, woke up around 5 and used the extra time for work or reading as applicable.

Cat being kept overnight on an IV, and they found Bronchial thickening on the X-Ray which could be asthma or other stuff. They are giving her some steroid treatment to see if they can get her to eat and to deal with this...and if it's asthma then she'll need a pill each day to deal with it. Vet said it could be something else though, so they have to do more tests. He did say that older cats don't normally spontaneously develop asthma, so now I'm of course worried it's something far more serious.

Oh man. Trying to feed pills to an angry cat is just about the worst thing in the world. I remember a cat we had when I was a kid that HATED pills. It was basically just a tornado of claws and teeth.

Couldn't crush them and mash em in its food. It would know. Had to sort of ambush it with a towel and bear hug it while another person opened it's vise like jaws, showed the pill in and massaged its throat until it swallowed it.

Cantankerous old asshole of a cat.

They have pill pockets now (essentially a treat with a hole in it that you hide the pill in)...but I'm not sure how or if that would work.

I've seen a youtube video of feeding one to a cat and it SEEMS pretty simple...but my cat is not the most agreeable to such things (clipping her nails is a weekly ordeal).

I had one like that. Didn't matter how you hid them, he would know. I eventually learned the vet trick of holding the skin on his scruff and holding his head back until his mouth opened - it was still hit or miss whether I'd get the pill down his throat though, and even if I did he'd go outside and eat grass til he puked. Cats can be proper assholes when they want to be.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.
