My mom's pissed about shit again.. so annoying *sigh*

Seems like she promised some friend of hers that I'd help her son with preparing for his english exams/lessons/homework/whatever at school. I'm cool with that, I've done it before, and I like my mom's friend. BUT I have two jobs already, get called out to help her at her shop on short notice whenever AND she's nagging me every second day about finishing uni and getting a proper job already. And yet I get rewarded with sullen silence when I say I can't do that because, duh, I have already enough shit on my mind and calendar to keep track of. 'But she's going to pay you!' Yeah, duh, of course, but that's kinda not enough motivation to waste time on the commute there, sit around an hour, and waste more time on the commute back. And what pisses me off is that she's apparently planning to tag along so that she can chat with her friend.

Oh, she also apparently promised some other friend of hers that I could help out at said friend's shop in the weeks leading up to Xmas. Yes, money, I get it. But then stop nagging about me not finishing uni. I happen to have no time for that between working one job or the other, and trying to earn money by doing what I've studied years for. It's all I ever hear.. 'You need money.' Beside, that is, 'Are you sure you're not into girls? I would totally accept it, you know.' No, fuck off. Isn't life great? Ugh.

Right, sorry for the rant, it's a minor annoyance, I'm used to it, but annoying it still is

I loved die casting. I worked at the point source for all Makita aluminum castings for their circular, miter, and jig saws, among many other things, including all the seats in the Carolina Panthers stadium. Unbearably hot in the summer, cold as shit in the winter, always filthy greasy, the occasional boom from a melt furnace, aluminum spitting past a worn head on a shot arm. I have no idea how far the computer controls have come in the last 15 years, but I suspect that there's still an art to making a die run at optimal output.

My peripheral neuropathy / foot drop means I can never safely set foot in a factory again.

Lol, well good thing Im not a machinist anymore. Die casting is definitely a cool process, but Im certainly past the point where I want to have to do that kind of work everyday. Now I have more of an Engineer/Tech role where I design and implement processes to make the machining process more idiot proof as well as toubleshooting when something breaks. Now if you want to talk about crazy, fairly dangerous workplaces try 1500 ft down in a salt mine. That was fun. Constant temp of at least 110, more when the equipment was working in the area, the threat of 50 lb salt boulders falling from the ceiling and hoping you werent suffocated or blow up by a gas pocket. On the other hand I got to play with explosives

And dont tell me there is yet another Carolina boy in the house.

Well TTT, it's a pain, but you're in the right sector alright. I work in engineering and it's MASSIVE atm. Not just oil and gas either.
I know Rolls Royce go through project engineers like toilet roll, and their HQ is in Derby. I happen to remember driving past the JCB HQ in Uttoxeter a few weeks ago too, and that's pretty huge. They're both in your neck of the woods aren't they?
I think with your experience and qualifications you won't actually have any problems finding something. It's the time frame and distance that will be the issues I'm sure.
So chin up, I always find this situation makes me think "well I'm going to get a BETTER job now".

Also working from home would be awesome, but dangerous for me. I'm too irresponsible.

Funny you mention JCB, thats where I am just leaving, they are having massive cut backs atm so theres a no go. I am currently looking at a few awesome jobs, and so far, all on better money, so I reckon it will be ok, just a worry when you first get cut really.

the JCB is pretty cool, but the money spent on lakes, a 20 something million golf course, and extra floor for the rich directors, kinda makes you feel a slight bit bitter when you lose your job and a fraction of the cost of ONE of these activities could keep you in work forever lol. But yeah, nice place to drive past and walk around on dinner breaks! lol

Well, I'm a linguist and an international relations major doing mostly engineering-related work nowdays (design, in any case). It's not as fun as I thought it would be. I'll go behind a bar anytime, esp. for british paychecks. I'll haul the gf over with me and we've a full staff right there!
