I have a friend who worked at a call centre (*shudder*) for rather dubious credit cards. Fortunately, he was on inbound calls only - but even that was soul-destroying. To be on the sales side, let alone the in-person sales side? Yeah, I don't think I could do that unless it was absolutely necessary to my continued existence. :S I just wouldn't be happy with selling people things they don't need, and are likely to hurt them.

(Bear in mind, I work for a bank. There is a reason I am not frontline staff at the bank - I hate the concept of 'referrals', which is what we call 'sell the customer other products than what they are there for to get your performance index'. I hate it as a customer, I'd hate it more as staff.)

Agreed. I know that when I'm doing my shopping having a guy approach me I know, even I they're being friendly, that they want something. That immediately puts me on the defensive. You sound like a good guy and the fact that you have a moral issue with it shows you shouldn't be doing this job! If you're not too worried about the money I think quitting is the best idea.

However would it be pertinent to stay a bit longer just to save a bit? Only you know exactly what your financial situation/future prospects are like. All the best and keep us updated.

just been given my weeks notice at work, which sucks. Got a line on engine design at Aston Martin but its 90 minutes away and straight through Birmingham city centre which is just a shocking drive. not great timing to need to find another job. Luckily I just finished my degree to add to my 8 years Engineering experience so hopefully something shiny pops up this week ready for next week or the week after! Might be a lean Christmas this year!

So thanks everyone for your support. I really apreaciated it. I didn't end up getting much sleep sat night so i spent most of sunday sleeping/napping.

I informed my supervisor today that I'd be quitting today. I wanted to do it in person however I ended up doing it over the phone. I though my shift was 12-8 but it was actually 2-8 so i was rather early. She didn't seem to mind as driving out to my location would have taken quite a lot of time out of her day and overall took well to it. I also told her I could take my materials to a co worker so she doesnt have to drive out to my end to give the co worker more materials when he runs out. I just need to write a letter of resignation for tonight (i told her i'd email her one if needed and she said yes).

On the other job front. Ill be finding out this week if il be going in for a job at the local GM plant. I found out about it through friend of a friend sort of thing. Gm needs line workers and will accept pretty much anyone. Its not exactly challenging work but it pays quite well for no brain work. It's also good experience for me as my goal once i get my accounting designation and letter is to do cost accountign which is very manufacturing based. As a result having first hand manufacturing experience could do me wonders in an interview in the long run.

Being a contract engineer thats the deal sadly. Its something you take on the chin, you get and give the same notice period as how often you get paid basically. So weekly. I applied for 7 jobs yesterday and told them I am immediately available, one was working at home for an extra £10 per hour cuz I need a CAD PC and CAD license. luckily I have them, so that would be sick! Also Aston Martin and Nissan are on the table, hopefully find something in the next coupld of weeks otherwise I stop eating lol. I just want to avoid having to rent somewhere away from home, 2 hour commutes are not my favourite thing lol

What's the public transport system like in Birmingham? (I'm assuming it's Birmingham in the Midlands not Birmingham in the US somewhere)
I know here in Manchester we have a ton of options that would mean crossing the city wouldn't be too terrible...

Sadly (in a way) I am in Stoke-On-Trent, and while I love living here, commuting to Brum or Manc is terrible. I have done commuting to Knutsford, which wasn't terrible, but the city centre would just be a no go really, unless the money was right of course, I might train it, possibly, or rent a place in or near the city in the week and come home on the Friday, or maybe do a 4 day week if I can get it passed off with a new employer. Being a contractor awards many flexibilities not usually available, so hopefully something comes up. I have a line on a good job near Wolverhampton, which is a nice commute from Stoke, so that could be awesome. Plus alot more money, and on trailers, which is my bread and butter! Fingers crossed though, or you may see me sweeping your street Tiste Simeon!

Well TTT, it's a pain, but you're in the right sector alright. I work in engineering and it's MASSIVE atm. Not just oil and gas either.
I know Rolls Royce go through project engineers like toilet roll, and their HQ is in Derby. I happen to remember driving past the JCB HQ in Uttoxeter a few weeks ago too, and that's pretty huge. They're both in your neck of the woods aren't they?
I think with your experience and qualifications you won't actually have any problems finding something. It's the time frame and distance that will be the issues I'm sure.
So chin up, I always find this situation makes me think "well I'm going to get a BETTER job now".

Also working from home would be awesome, but dangerous for me. I'm too irresponsible.

Yeah not a great thing to hear most times. On the up side its nice to hear that there are fellow machine shop workers on the site. On that note, Ive been working on a project for the better part of a year now and I just cant quite seem to close it out. It seems like there is always something else I need to learn or somebody else I need to wait on to get something done. It damn exhausting.
