Yeah I should not be in this thread really. I am married. We are buying a house. I have had a pay increase in work. Lots of other little things.

"These are the days of our lives" rings true with me at the moment.

I don't want to jinx it though. Touch wood.

I'm 90 to 95% deaf most likely because I got the measles and something else as a baby in Nepal, before most people get immunization shots.

So... You two may want to consider that the effects of non vaccination can also be life altering or even deadly.

It's hard to rationalize the complex feelings and thoughts surrounding an autistic relative, so best of luck for all of you going forwards and may everyone be healthy.

Hey amph, I hope you don't mind me asking this, but just what does it mean to have 90% hearing loss, like in terms of what the percentage represents? Is it 90% of the frequencies on the spectrum of sound that ears normally pick up? Or a matter of volumes that register? Clarity? Or is the percentage thing kind of representative/amalgam of all of that?

He can only hear the first 10% of any given conversation. It is most inconvenient.

Means that sounds need to be "lawnmower noises" loud for me to hear them without technology. A person bellowing in my ear would be equivalent to that as well.

I hear lower frequencies slightly better, which means that the hearing aids amplify high pitched noises more (and they bother me more than the average person when too loud) and put less oomph in the lower frequency volumes. The devices get me to about 90% of what a normal person can hear, with the caveat of it being filtered through software and electronic devices, so I'm hearing a slightly different sound than most people are.

I also assiduously avoid being rained on or splashed in the head region, in order to protect the devices. The coping mechanisms and workarounds are essentially automatic now for me, but I am always going to mis-hear things and not hear other things.

This has been a fun read. I too hesitated with vaccines. A good friend had a baby who was (appeared to be ) totally normal. Made eye contact, met milestones. At her 18 month shots she got sick and never recovered. Suddenly (it appeared) she had autism. Now as a nurse healthcare worker my whole life I KNOW the diseases are horrific and that I don't want anyone getting them. I still hesitated. My Dr. Was awesome and we talked it out. She made me feel better and we broke up some of the vaccinations so as not to shock their tiny systems with so much at once. My kids are all up to date on their shots but yes I hesitated.

I had a similar situation to amph hearing-wise, actually, only total loss in my left ear which leaves me able to hear quieter noises but unbalanced and short on options to fix it.

And don't worry Stormcat, just cause it's an irrational fear doesn't make it not scary.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Thanks. This is what I was trying to get across. Not that we believed all the hype, just that it gave us pause. How couldn't it?
How you describe the shift towards autism is exactly how my mother in law said it happened too, seemingly all of a sudden.
I can't see how that makes us irresponsible or bad people/parents.

I think for me personally the thing that struck me was the amount of people who blindly ignored facts & repeated all these falsehoods despite them having been proven to be false. I saw more than a few say "would you rather have polio or autism? " one person even said "I'd rather my child had polio than autism because polio is a physically disability and you can deal with that easily with painkillers. Autism is a mental disability that is a lot harder to deal with."

Even when pointed out that the signs of autism often start appearing at the same time as the time that vaccinations are meant to happen, they wouldn't accept it. The person with polio was called a fake and asked how much Obama was paying her (she is Australian & had nothing to do with the US...)

So yeah taking things into consideration for the best (as you two both did) is a looooong way from what these other idiots are doing. The fact that there is a massive campaign dedicated to spreading misinformation is what originally made me so mad.

Also as a healthcare worker I KNOW how much big pharma lies. And they DO. I see first hand consequences of pills that harm because they were pushed through trials or used for "off purposes". So it is not out of the realm of possibility that some vax are a scam, too. I have seen big pharm reps come in and sell stuff to doctors they have NO business selling. So much of this stuff is truly poison. Working hospice I have seen multiple times a case where we get someone signed on, we stop all 20 of their meds and the doctor has given them 6 months tops. Suddenly about 30 days after they stop all meds they perk up, they focus, they.... come back to life... and go on to get off hospice and live for years. I have seen it too many times not to believe it is the pills. So I would say never trust companies who supply "facts" to always paint a clear picture.

I wouldn't say the drugs are poison (one of the major focuses of testing is to ensure they aren't poison) but I would agree we need serious reform of drug testing and big pharmas ability to sell drugs 'off purpose'. For one the fact that drug companies employ so many salesmen is disturbing, a drug should sell because it is clinically effective, best shown by repeated testing. The fact that all drug testing is not required to be openly published, and we don't have a system where the results of all uses of a drug are also openly published is an international scandal. I've never been convinced by drug cocktails either, once you go beyond 3 or 4 drugs I find it hard to believe you can know what the potential interactions could be (and this is something which would not come up in testing). That said I think in most cases it is unlikely that drugs have a serious negative impact on lifespan (though certainly they can reduce quality of life) as so much testing is done to ensure drugs are safe.
