My computer has decided to start woking again for some reason.

I just finished ME3, and while I'm not launching into a seething, bitter mess about the ending...I'm not happy with it either.

Was woken up by my the family living directly below me but on the ground floor level because both she and my downstairs neighbour have a puddle of water in their electrics/ water pipe room. Turns out the leak probably has sprung in my appartment, the concrete around my water pipe is wet and the plastic under my lovely oak floor is moist. At best, a leak has sprung above ground (still a short-circuiting danger). At worst, half my floor will need removing, and whether this is going to be my insurance or the collective insurance of all home owners very much remains to be seen.

Is it that all 3 choices lead to the destruction of the relays and therefore pretty much all life on neighboring worlds that upsets people? AKA Those 3 choices don't really matter so it's not really choice? Or is it more from a story point of view where not only does your hero become a villain, but he pretty much destroys everything as well? Because frankly, I find it brave as shit to do that. It speaks from a narrative that says...yep, this LOOKS like it was all for nothing, you can't be the hero and not come out unscathed and basically this is going to wipe out A LOT of life and clean the slate. See, to my head it only LOOKS that way. This is the gaming equivalent of ..."To beat these fuckers, you have to sacrifice everything. Fucking EVERYTHING." and down the line, after that slate is wiped clean and life begins to flourish again, you will see its purpose. This is the long game goal, it doesn't mean that your actions meant nothing, it means they were going to end up this way no matter what...and it would be the remnants and survivors and their children who would eventually benefit from this. It's more selfless than one might think.

At least that's how I see it. But then, I'm a long time fan of anime where the long game and the hero are tropes that are played with to the nth degree.

I just can't seem to understand the fan backlash is all.

For me, and I guess for many others, it's about all the choices you've made in ME1, ME2 and even earlier in ME3 mean exactly jack shit at the ending, and that it is tragically disconnected from the theme of the trilogy. It doesn't matter if you saved or sacrificed the Council, if you let the Rachni Queen live or killed her, it doesn't matter if you saved or destroyed the Collector Base, it doesn't mean anything if you cured the genophage, nor does it even matter if you brokered a truce between the quarians and geth. Suddenly the game's theme shifts from overcoming impossible odds to organics vs non-organics, all out of the blue. And that's not even touching the subject of the starchild, space magic, the crucible/catalyst... You go for 2.98 games defying ancient eldritch horrors, arrogant politicians and scheming bastards, convincing racial leaders to do things your way as you go, and then you just accept the A, B, C choice without a whimper. It's like they made an awesome, great, super-tasty cake, and then, as a finishing touch, poured cheap ketchup all over it. It's better to think of it as if Ass Defect is a series that was never finished.

See and I say all that stuff mattered...it just didn't matter immediately. Doing all that stuff does lead to the eventual destruction of the Reapers...but you just don't get to see the fruits of that labor in character. It makes it no less poignant for the future. IMHO anyways.

Ugh, don't get into it with author's who feel that, for example, Avenger's Loki calling Black Widow by a sexually-infused nasty name is sexist (which of course it is) but that somehow (to said author's mind) therefore Joss Whedon CHOSE to make Loki sexist and that's not right. *foot stomp* And why should Loki call her a name like that?! *double foot stomp*

To which I responded that he's the villain. Making him say sexist stuff is simply another reason to hate him.

To which he kind of took the stance that a villain is "Not allowed to be viciously sexist"...
