Holy crap, I had no idea this would happen when I woke up this morning but I just spent the last 2 hours in a meeting with a Saudi Sheikh and his wife. I wouldn't dare go into specifics online but let's just say I'd love to have the entitlement complex that rich people have. Some days the fact that the world is stacked so unfairly in these peoples favour feels so much worse than others.

Ah, but Mez, that's because you are a scientist, not part of the service economy. When you're trodden on as much as as some of us, it starts to become part of the job. Anyhow, the Sheik was probably quite avant garde, considering he brought his wife to a business matter.

EDIT: just like whats-her-name, Assad's wife.

He's definitely a character. His missus is a Californian ex-supermodel. It's been a surreal day. I've never had to suck up so badly before!!

Just found out my mother has Cancer. She is undergoing more tests today and I'm half a continent away.

Sorry to hear Obi, I hope that it's discovered on time and that the doctors can do something.

@ stormy: that sounds bad. I can only hope it works out somehow.

@ obdi: I hope this is an early discovery and that your mother pulls through.

Good luck to you both.

Hell, the best thing I've read in 2 weeks was a fanfiction story that I enjoyed chiefly because it was a story about finding a happy home with a mother that cares.

This just made me irredeemably sad.

:p

Sorry. I'm just muddling through, trying as hard as I can to avoid using the same emotional crutch as my mother.

@obdi- she'll pull through, if she's full of half as much piss and vinegar as you.

I've been taking antibiotics for my chest infection and I have been feeling drastically worse than I figured I should be. I was considering going to the hospital when I spoke to my mum. Turns out I'm allergic to the antibiotics I've been taking and somehow I forgot about it. :S

The only valid explanation is that my memory was swiped clean as part of an elaborate plot by my arch-nemesis, the Universe.

Best wishes and luck, Obdi *hugs*

Stormy, hang in there, in 7 days you'll be freer and have more options open to you. You'd be surpised how much time you can hang in there, and how quickly that time passes sometimes. It's shit, but it WILL be over, just make sure you do what you can to change things after this time is over. As tired as the advice is, try not to get into a rut.

Damn, that sucks. Was going to post the news of Adam Yauch's death (MCA of the beastie boys) as messing with my groove, then saw this.

Sorry to hear that Obdi - sincerest wishes for it to be treatable.

Got a phone call from my mother yesterday and I wish I didn't answer it - found out my Aunt has died ( 87 so it wasn't unexpected but still) and also my little cousin was in an accident and is now half blind. I'm horrible for being able to open myself up to giving comfort but I feel utterly useless and feel like scum for not being able to.

Also watching a documentary about the Mccrone Report called Diomhair - Secrets( BBC ALBA).

It beggars belief that this sort of thing has happened in my country and the same attitude is still peddled by the mass media to this day. The BBC and Westminster are beyond contempt.

Sorry to hear that Obdi. I wish her the best possible and you the best of a bad day.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Today is the Pot march in Toronto...and while I have zero issue with pot and smoking of it...I find disrupting traffic on a Saturday in toronto is superfluous. This isn't the States...people don't get arrested for smoking pot in Toronto. They just don't.

That and every restaurant between here and the bookstore was RAMMED with those with the munchies. It was impossible to do anything.

Anyways, I just think marching for Pot in a city like Toronto is silly since our gov't doesn't really give a shit if a person smokes it.
