Since it was the Simpsons' 500th episode yesterday I spent some time online watching "best of" clips and now my coworkers must think that I've gone nuts because I keep giggling to myself for no reason. I'd forgotten just how funny that show could be when they were firing on all cylinders.

Because it makes the person finally feel that they don't have to hide how they are. Most everyone has friends and family that will love them regardless of their sexual orientation, but there is always that ingrained fear that everyone will leave your side in disgust. It's a great moment to admit it to yourself and those around you, and find that they all love you still in your openness.

I don't think I explained that well.

I was the first person five of my friends came out to first.

My reaction to the first friend was 'Well that was a given.' (Not the reaction they expected)

My reaction to the second friend was 'Cool. Do you want the last slice of pizza?' (Not the reaction they expected. Upon seeing how disenchanted with my response they were I proceeded to exclaim very loudly 'Congratulations!')

My reaction to the third friend was 'I'm flattered, really. But I prefer d***' (Yep, not my finest moment and not the reaction they were hoping for)

My reaction to the fourth friend was 'Does that mean you're going to start ordering girlie drinks when we go out? I'm veto'ing anything with an umbrella.' (Not the reaction they expected though to be fair that's exactly the kind of response they should have expected from me given our friendship.)

What I don't get is why they came out to me in the first place - I mean, they'll each tell you that I'm the straightess person they know. Heck, I make ruler's jealous! *shakes head* One day I may, may, start to understand people.

EDIT: Oh, the fifth one my reaction was 'Seriously, do I not have any straight friends?' Funnily, that was the kind of response they were expecting.(Though technically, the fifth one was before the fourth one....I've done this out of order.)

I'm hoping the step-daughter comes out soon as a proper lesbian (as opposed to a "lipstick" that just smooches chicks to turn guys on).

That way I don't have to worry about her getting knocked up at 15 to some apprentice panel-beater. Which is sadly almost considered "royalty" around these parts. :p

Guild Wars 2 did a closed beta and the NDA ran out sometime Monday, and holy balls I have such a raging nerdboner for this game WHY ISN'T IT OUT YET
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Are you kidding!? Messing with my groove would be if there was a single dissenting voice about how good this game is, even with only 3/5 playable races available and before they finish optimising the thing!

I just see it as pointless as 'coming out' to say something like: 'I prefer pepsi to coke. People really glorify sexuality too much.
I've never come out, so to speak, but I wouldn't deny it if someone asked me. Mind you, if I wanted to be really specific, I would deny being gay, but I would also deny being straight or Bisexual. I would say I'm human.
I just don't see the point in talking about it or declaring it.
People who wave their sexuality as if it's a flag are just petty, to my mind. :p

EDIT - What I meant to say was, one of the books I ordered from Amazon on Karst geology and topography arrived today. :p And I am happy.

Tell that to Matthew Shepard('s grieving family).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Having just reread a news article about nine teenagers committing suicide from being bullied by homophobic bigots in America recently, it's far more involved than that. It's a statement of identity in a society where through no fault of your own you have a higher chance of being murdered for being who you are. (or even who you aren't, as only one of those teenagers was actually homosexual)

And that's just in the US, where it isn't actually illegal on pain of death to be gay in the first place. I hate (not really) to be the person who brings up the word privilege in a low pressure conversation but this is a completely valid case.

My mother and step father aren't happy about it at all, in fact they threatened to disown me and my grandmother has tried to get me correctively raped.
I couldn't care less though.

And when I said that part about 'being human,' I meant to say that I am perfectly capable of being attracted to anyone.

EDIT - Perhaps my argument is flawed then. :p I was too quick to speak, sorry.

And I doubt actively coming out would be the best decision in such an environment, hence why I don't believe announcing your sexuality is always wholly necessary. Coming out is likely to make things worse. I know this sounds like I'm saying: 'you must hide,' but if it means self preservation and survival in such extreme circumstances, then hiding, to my mind, is necessary.

That means they'll be literally living a lie, which is a big contributor to decreased mental health, extreme unhappiness and a high suicide rate for most gay people. A lot of people feel challenging the status quo of casual hatred plus the ability to live as yourself is worth the risk. And every single one who does is making it easier for the rest to be open about their sexuality, changing society to make it acceptable to be who you are and not what won't get you beaten one bit at a time.

Three kids have killed themselves in my town of 6,000 in the past 10 years. THREE. And we're not even a particularly bigoted town.

EDIT - This was a reply to Illy.

That makes sense. :p

Perhaps my warped opinion is a consequent result of an equally warped experience.
I don't mind living a lie, if it benefits me in the end. But I don't bare the weight/pressure of social connections, the few people I know/am familiar with are people I don't speak to anyway, so it's a little easier for me I guess.

Well, I really am expressing a flawed message aren't I: don't hide from yourself, but hide from everyone else, and don't make friends.

Sorry, I shouldn't have carried this on, I have just made myself sound like a fool. :p

Feeling somewhat better now that I've had a rest. I guessing the leftovers I ate this morning weren't really leftover material...

EDIT: Only downside is that now I have to change my timetable. Oh well.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

And considering that they said to me, point-blank, that I couldn't do it, I reckon this is a win :p
