That rings a bell so I must have asked you previously. I'm jealous. Been obsessed with birds of prey since a book I read at the age of about 11. Joined a falconry club in New Jersey, back when I lived there, just to have an excuse to be around them close up. Unfortunately, becoming an actual falconer is one of those "If I were to ever hit the lottery" dreams. The good thing about mild winters in Florida, though, is that plenty of hawks, falcons and eagles stop here for migration. I expect to see the first of many American kestrels any day now.

You have to do an apprenticeship over there don't you, if I recall correctly? I know it's a much more regulated thing than it is over here. American kestrels are beautiful - so I'm jealous in turn

Yes, you have to start as an apprentice with an established falconer for a sponsor and in most places that I know of your first bird can only be an American kestrel or a red tailed hawk. Although, I believe I read that Montana is close to making prairie falcons allowable for apprentices there! Then there is a journeyman period and eventually, master falconer. The sport is pretty heavily regulated by all accounts. Surely not just anyone can go out and get a bird and practice it there? There is some amount of licensing and hoops to jump through?

Congratulations QT, that's awesome!

Although I'm a little disappointed you didn't name him something more appropriate, like Vader, or Luke, or Emperor Sheev Palpatine.

Do the falcons dress as owls for Harry Potter week?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Been a while since I've, well, done anything hereabouts, but I guess I can tell y'all I'm happy winning the Rejoice pre-order contest.

So if you were in my shady shoes, what would you have liked to talked to Steven about?

Ok fine, I'll say it.

Ten points to Gryffindor.

I'm in Cyprus, for half term break. Just spent afternoon snorkelling and digging weird and pretty creatures out from under rocks, in a quiet sandy bay while the kids played on the beach.

Back in hotel; fish night at restaurant, I am now stuffed with a large variety of fresh fish, seafood and wine. It's still 25°. I'm now drinking gin in tbe bar while my boy beats me at Star Wars Rebels Top Trumps. (Why the heck has Kallus got a higher Use of the Force rating than an Inquisitor?)

Take that, Autumn.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Thanks - he's a red kite/black kite hybrid. As far as we know he's the only one in the UK (he was an accident) - he's one of my two favourite birds at the centre, and spent all morning trying to eat that time turner necklace I'm wearing.
