And the Yanks are going to South Africa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Got some pretty cool books - among them some I've been looking for - FOR FREE! They're old and need a bit of dusting off but that's in no way diminishing the awesomeness :)

And yet, say it here or use it in an academic paper here... not pointless anymore is it? Acceptable there, not here. Unless you think all the academics over there would think it's okay to start taking out the "u"s in humour, colour, and whatever else is spelled that way.

How to tell when using one variation over another... how about distinguishing them by the region in which that variation is being used? Grand idea, that!

Don't you all have concepts like the "Queen's English" anyways? As opposed to less proper forms?

Bah. No more rowing about American-English. Microsoft has settled the issue. Posted Image

I spend all day, every day bar the odd weekend reading scholarly articles and books, the US scholars use Zs were there should be Ss, miss out the letter U, use words like fall, that don't mean anything to the British and it doesn't stop me understanding them, the point I'm making is that it's nonsensecal to draw a difference between the two when I have to write articles etc which have to take in to account literature from all over the anglophone world. For example a few years ago I was writing a long-ish piece about the Kulturkampf and the German centre party. All the literature coming put of the US said Center Party, everything else said Centre Party and it became annoying as hell trying to produce consistent work when I had to use 2 different spellings one of which my machine constantly tol me was wrong.

I just don't think it would be any skin off our noses to allow 2 spellings in the same document.

And no, Queens English, is just slang and it's really what we'd call 'RP' and as such is an accent not really a way of spelling.

Even the Queen doesn't actually speak Queen's English, apparently.

Awesome weekend! :) I got a borders voucher from one of the ladies at work to thank me for working with her, then went for a 60 minute massage (which was awesome but it felt like my back had been punched for the rest of the weekend), snoozed at home, went to a LAN, slept on a tiny couch that my head and back only just fitted on, went home next day, then went shopping and paid off my courset and got and awesome matching skirt, then cooked for 6 hours, fell asleep at 12:30 while the last of my stuff was simmering, woke up an hour later to find it nicely simmered then went to bed properly, finished off making my lasagne in the morning, went to play DnD for 8 hours, and everyone liked my lasagne. :p :)

So I am now lacking sleep and worn out but AWESOME weekend was had :p

snoozed at home, went to a LAN

My poor brain was thinking, "She went to a Local Area Network?????"

I'm confused (it happens easily).

I don't have to go to work today (happy Thanksgiving to all of my fellow Canadians!) and I have a nice gift card to spend on books. It's shaping up to be a very good day. Posted Image

Got a personal email from Stephen R. Donaldson. I had written him a question on his website asking if he was aware that DoD was dedicated to him. He actually wrote me back to say that he wasn't, but now has a copy and has begun reading it, and was quite touched by the dedication..
