Maybe the eye was used to ensure a way out of Draginpur using the power of the Child God. Other than that i can't really think of anything. I mean Rake destroys himself moving the Gate of Darkness and maybe the eye gave everyone else a chance to get out when Dragnipur was broken by Brood.

i agree. since ditch was the vortex, or whatever, his eye was the eye of the god and using its power they could all escape. i think maybe this was draconus' answer to the 'finality' that the sword possesed. although it seems rather convoluted...

Not likely, in thatcase she, or Rake would have handed it over to Drac. Yet there is no mention of that.

It's a tantalizing bit that SE loves to throw at us. It's similar to the end of RG with Icarium's storyline. We really don't know what the hell that little scene means.

That eye scene is perhaps the my biggest reason for thinking Anomander will be back.

Yeah, I finished it. I'm speechless. I have nothing to say atm. I think my head is broken.
Edit: okay, one thing I wonder about right now is what the deal between Hood and Paran was? I'm gonna chew on that for a while.

I can see that.
Yet so much was made of Rake's sacrifice and death I can't see SE bringing him back.....can I?

But who knows what shape he could come back as. He's not a pure Blood Tiste Andii (as in, he has dragon blood in him now, not that he's a bastard.), so does the blood of tiam make his joining with darkness an absolute?
Anomander is surrounded by mysteries. His sacrafice could be the beginning of something larger, who knows.
Just something that has annoyed me: Has anyone else noticed that most of the cahracters in Gardens of the Moon are nothing like how they are in future book? This rings true especially for Anomander. I was reading some of his interactions with Baruk and its just ridiculous. Baruk Rakes equal? Shadow Throne being able to take Rake on? Sillanah being Almost as strong as Rake?
Please.

It is strange how a knife in the back didn't kill Ruin but Rake dies from a sword to the head (though it is Dragnipur).

When the blood touches Dragnipur, doesn't the sword steal the soul? Thats how I thought it worked.
And I'm pretty sure Silchas had wards or some such ...

You're probably right about Dragnipur.
But in MT, it says specifically that it isn't "easy" to kill a Draconean Ascendant.

And it wasn't! Rake was so fucking awesome, in order for him to die, he had to throw the fight. He didn't even break up a sweat!
Dragnipur must by-pass all the power that the Ascendants. Its the only explanation. I Wonder why Bloodeye didn't stab Silchas in the head? That would have been my first port of call.

But that's what made Rake so amazingly awesome.
An unselfish mega powerful ascendant who saved the fucking universe, not just his own people.

Well alot of things in the malazan world require sacrifice to work,
his death(s) anchored the gate into black coral right? it stopped its endless wandering in the sword and put it right in the malazan world....
what happens(ed) to the sword didnt really matter after that because the threat to the universe was done and the gate already gone...
question, what is chaos going to be up to now that it doesnt have the gate to pursue?

You are correct bout Dragnipur. I reread the section where Rake killed the Hounds and Paran observed one of them was "barely scratched" so it appears that all wounds caused by Drag are fatal.

'Bout Anomander, I reckon if hes back it wont be till the end of the last book.
dragnipur wouldn't kill him, as hes stronger than draconus and draconus comes back from it as we are told at the end of tth.
What may have killed him was the chaos, yet lots is said about going back to KG, and wtf is with the eye etc. We'll just have to wait and see.
