Not bolts of lightning, flashes of light reflected off different surfaces from the moon fragments.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

The hounds of light could have come from the moon and the beams of light coming off the shards were their (for lack of a better word) vapour trails. We know that the beings on the moon are light aspected so it makes sense that the hounds could have lived there. The brother light or Grallin could be their master.

Just speculation....

Remind me how we *know* that there are beings on the moon, and that they are lightaspected please.

I can see how we could speculate how that could be the case, but know?

MT, p 133 US trade PB, Menandore is reflecting upon the night sky, and the moon:

"The moon had risen, prison world to Menandore's true father, who was trapped within it. Father Shadow's ancient battles had made this world, shaped it in so many ways. Scabandari Bloodeye, stalwart defender against the fanatic servants of implacable certitude, whether that certitude blazed blinding white, or was the all-swallowing black. The defeats he had delivered -- the burying of Brother Dark and the imprisonment of Brother Light there in that distant, latticed world in the sky -- were both gifts, and not just to the Edur but to all who were born and lived only to one day die"

"Gardens of the Moon" p 396 US HC-- Apsalar is describing the moon:

"Its oceans. Grallin's Sea. That's the big one. The Lord of the Deep waters living there is named Grallin. He tends vast, beautiful underwater gardens. Grallin will come down to us, one day, to our world. And he'll gather his chosen and take them to his world. And we'll live in those gardens, warmed by the deep fires, and our children will swim like dolphins, and we'll be happy since there won't be anymore wars, and no empires, and no swords and shields. Oh, Crokus, it'll be wonderful, wont it?"

I'm not saying that Menandore is wrong but her perception of the truth maybe totally wrong, or partially incorrect. The Grallin one could be a myth like the man in the moon in our world. Moreover I think Brood asked SE about who Grallin was (someone did) and SE sort of said..."err, who, Grallin, never heard of him...oh right..errr." So I doubt he'll have much of a role if he exists at all!!

Yeah, Apsalars childhood myths are probably less accurate than Menandore. Menandore would likely have had some kind of personal interaction with whoever it was up there, while Apsalar clearly would not have.

If we assume that Brother Dark is Silchas Ruin, which seems very plausible, then it is likely that Brother Light is a Tiste Liosan at around Osserc's power level, but probably not Osserc himself. He does not appear very imprisoned in HoC. So... which other Tiste Liosan has been named? Anyone with a name close to Grallin? :D

I half remember a passage where some of them might have been mentioned, but I might be confusing it with Tiste Edur. I know those are mentioned. Will search when I have the time, but feel free to do it faster :D

Come on! She says her father is up there... There must be a lot of truth in what she says, she's talking about a very close relation after all and blood ties between ascendants on Wu seem to be very important.

Cougar, her father and Grallin do not have to be the same people, the moon is a big place after all.

So? We've no idea where her information comes from, according to other sources we have Osserc is her father, but this is a flawed source. I'm not saying your wrong but this passage with the thoughts of a single character, can only be interpreted as she thinks this, not that it is defintiely the truth. It's a bloody cryptic thought anyway, 'her true father' suggests that others believe someone else is her father.

A question similar to this was asked during one of Erickson's signings.

You know, the ending of that interview, especially the part about Grallian has me wondering.

Has Erikson even reread a single of the books in the series since completion? I have a sneaking suspicion that he hasn't which is funny :D

Brother Dark = Silchas is the most logical conclusion when you consider Scabandari stabbed him in the back and he ended up prisoner of the Azath

Brother Dark could also be Andarist. He who refused to drink Tiams blood.

It's not menandore thinking, it's trull, see p87 UK HC, so as a source it's not reliable twisted as the edur history is, if it was menandore thinking it owuld be much more reliable. As for the true father thing, menandore is one of the three daughters of scabandari bloodeye in edur mythology, so he is who peopel commonly believe to ber her father, but her true father is osserc or another liosan.

Oh and I'd say it's quite likely that brother light is osserc, he is said to be dreaming in HoC, so he is probably stuck in one place.

IH you da man, well that backs my point up even more as it being unreliable one character perception. But why would Osserc be remembered as Brother Dark he's got nowt to do with the dark?

Edit: Oh right

Just wondering why you think its Silchas.

I believe that Brother Dark is Silchas Ruin since Brother Dark is described as buried. I am assuming that Brother Dark is a Tiste Andii, and the only such on that power level that I am aware of that actually has spent a long time buried and did not dig himself up until MT is Silchas Ruin.

Anomander Rake disspeared for a long time, someone else could have done that too.
Brother Dark is described as being on the moon, so since we know where silchas is I think it kinda rules him out.
It'll be someone completely random, cause if we've heard about them, they're active, and therefore no longer buried in the moon.
