One of these days I've got to give Donaldson another chance...
As a 19 year old, I hated his writing... never really gave him a chance since.

(if you havnt read the first TC book there may a spoiler)in a way im glad its not all one way traffic. i thought that mordants need definetly had more life in it. anything you could imagine could be pulled through those mirrors.. for example only.. what if a jaghut tyrant or the like got pulled through one of the mirrors and declared war on the entire continent?? the possibilities were endless.. and the gap novels im still one book away from finishing.. im loving it, its cringe worthy at some stages tho.. but thats what i like. it makes the stories more beliveable and real to me, it mirrors our own world with how fucked up people can be. thats one of the reasons why i love the world of malaz. i have handed the covenant books to some mates.. and they have all said they put it down after the rape scene... only to pick it back up..lol anybody else?

I've heard so many people who stopped reading at that point. Makes me sad, they're missing out on some good stuff.

Teresa is just one thing I don't like about Mordant's Need, I'm afraid. This female POV doesn't work for Donaldson. His imagination from his teenhood gets in the way. The other Mordant characters are rather squishy, too. Splash some water on them, and they melt. Did I mention it made me gag?

Yeah, the vocabulary can get intense. You either need a dictionary, or your context clue-fu must be strong indeed.
Context Clue-fu, funny, like it.

You disappoint me, sir.
I've even got the "Reed Stephens" editions. Track 'em down; they're all great. The fact that they're mysteries are just a bonus; the main draw is the usual Donaldson characterizations -- in first person, even.

I never read them either. Sounds like I need to hunt them down

You're thinking of those firedog things.

I think we could infer it.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I really wasn't that bothered by her. She was a little depressing, but interesting enough as a character. There was so many other things going on though, even if I had hated her it wouldn't have mattered.

I have to disagree about the 'many things going on' statement. There wasn't much going on at all.

It's only fair, I guess, I came into to WoT thread and let everyone know my displeasure.
I don't think anyone is arguing that Mordant's need is his best work. Did you read the Gap?

No, haven't read the Gap. Might check out the library, and see if they have it.

Another vote for The Man Who... series. I read them as I came across them so it was out of order, but still loved the books.
First Chronicles are at the top of my speculative fiction list and the second is right up there. Need to reread Runes and get a hold of Fatal Revenant but I'm not really in a rush until the last book comes out. Too many ongoing series happening at the moment.

I read the first of the gap books nearly cover to cover in a bookstore. After reading the first chronicles I picked it up and just could not put it down. The rest of the series is great, although if the darkness of Thomas Covenant bothers you, there is not a character to like in Gap. Still, the first book is short and gripping, and anyone reading it will know pretty quickly if the series (which only gets darker) is going to be something they like.

Yeah, Gap is so dark it's ridiculous, which is why I love it. If you think SE is dark, HA! Gap makes Malazan look like Rainbow Bright on the darkness scale.
