For the past six months, it’s been difficult to budge Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing off the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Well, this week, a new title finally will: Iron Flame, Yarros’ sequel [...] Amazon has just announced plans to adapt Fourth Wing as a streaming series[...]

[...] Yarros’ system owes more to the long tradition of dragon-rider fantasy series by such authors as Cressida Cowell, Anne McCaffrey, and Naomi Novik. As is often the case with fictional dragons, the ones in Fourth Wing can communicate telepathically with humans, specifically their bonded riders, and because Violet’s and Xaden’s dragons are mated, the two human characters can speak in each other’s minds as well. This makes it easier for the couple to keep up the constant stream of sarcastic wisecracks [...]

[...] Seemingly every single sentence [...] includes at least one cliché, and you can spend hours on the internet discovering which other books readers believe that Yarros has plundered for themes and motifs. [...] a Frankenstein’s monster of borrowed romance and fantasy devices [...] world building displays a real lack of commitment and creativity [...]

Why is it so popular? It’s possible that many of the novel’s younger fans simply haven’t read enough to recognize how tired Yarros’ language and motifs are.

Iron Flame and Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros: Are the romantasy bestsellers actually any good? (slate.com)

Seems like the TV show would have a very hard time being worse than the books... and if it gets a blockbuster Amazon budget the visuals at least might be decent?

I’d say they are going to have a much harder time since Yarros has come out as a strong Zionist and is being widely boycotted in the book community for it. I can’t see that being something worthy of a show while that’s still going on. But then, they made OSC books into movies without much complaint, so who knows.

Huh. I'm viscerally surprised that anyone cares about their opinion, but obviously I shouldn't be. Guess I'm still too naive (or at least my viscera are...).

Doesn't seem to be stopping them from continuing to dominate the bestseller list. Amazon probably won't have too much trouble finding staff for the TV show since there seem to be plenty of Zionists or not-anti-Zionists in the TV/movie business. And it's not like they seem to care much about getting the best of all possible writers....

You’re probably right. It just still astonishes me that authors express vehement public feelings on such a subject when their whole career is based on selling themselves….no matter what way she fell on the topic she was going to piss off potential readers…and it’s not like her writing is all that good. She’s nabbed the BookTok set who haven’t dived too deep into fantasy with what is Essentially Anne Mcaffreys Pern novels with an added spicy layering…so to start burning bridges at that point seems misguided at best.

Guess Amazon hopes to appeal to fans of all the series she's stealing from... especially since they might never get big budget Dragonriders of Perne etc. (well, never until AI can input a novel as a prompt and spit out a series of high-end TV series...).

Since she's negatively influencing people and probably donating some of her profits to anti-Palestinian groups I guess I won't bother watching after all. Plenty of other stuff to watch.... (In case you missed it before: if you're watching Frasier you're donating to Trump &co via Kelsey Grammer.)

As someone who read several of the Pern books, it absolutely could use a spiffing up both in the quality of writing levels and in the horny levels.

I'm surprised it hasn't been done to mass success before now TBH.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

It would be cool to see an updated Pern. Some of fhe older books are…well…a little dated.

According to my saved bookmarks on Deviantart, there are plenty of ways they could make the Dragonriders of Pern hornier. It basically writes itself.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

From the descriptions of the novels in this series... it may have already.

Probably not, of course, but it may as well have. Seems like exactly the sort of ultraderivative and cliche-ridden romantasy series ChatGPT etc could easily come up with.

Band of Brothers a masterpiece. The Pacific I liked fine but was much less enthusiastic about overall, felt a liiiiittle artificial from time to time. Obviously a super high quality production though, with some standout moments. Masters of the Air looks to be the most cinematic of them all, for better or worse. But I mean, still a pretty easy add to the must-watch list.

They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Rewatched THE PACIFIC recently and appreciated it on another level than I had originally. This looks great!

Yeah that's far out, but I'm glad to know it's happening. Season 1 was amazing!

I know the animated show creators dropped out over creative differences, so that should give us all pause....but this looks pretty good?

I've watched 4 episodes of Vox Machina. I am not particularly digging it. Does it get better?

Season 1 or 2?

Season 1 does a lot of "Look at us, were are swearing and being gory in a D&D show!"....up front, and settles in later on. The back half of S1 is very much better than the front half. Season 2 was all cream as they stopped pretending to be what they were not and started just telling stories.
So yeah I feel it gets better, but YMMV.

I'd agree with QT. Once it stops effectively showing off being an animation aimed at adults and settles into the Whitestone story, it gets a lot better.

Series 2 didn't have the swaggering start, got straight down to story business and so was stronger all the way through, being occasionally genuinely moving as well.

So if anyone was into "Shadow and Bone" on Netflix .... buh bowwwwwwwwwwwww. Cancelled.

https://www.news.com...10c4e5ca85c0eaf

Netflix cancelling decisions mystify me sometimes. Apparently this (and others previously) was well-watched.
