The annual 'Here's what's coming in the Fall TV premiere season' round up has begun... http://tvbythenumber...cw-fox-and-nbc/

A few observations....

Quote

"The Crossing" (midseason): Refugees seek asylum in a small town — although they say they're fleeing a war in the United States that hasn't actually happened yet. Steve Zahn, Natalie Martinez and Sandrine Holt star in the show from creators Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie ("Scorpion," "Revenge").

On the one hand, US political commentary by way of tv series is just a weak notion. OTOH, there's a kernel of a concept here i'm intrigued by... hoping its more than just a basic timetravel thing, esp given how every time travel show of recent has tanked or failed to catch my interest.

Quote

"Inhumans" (fall, 9 p.m. Friday): The Marvel title about a group of alien-human hybrid beings comes to TV (and IMAX theaters for the first two episodes). Anson Mount ("Hell on Wheels"), Serinda Swan ("Graceland"), Iwan Rheon ("Game of Thrones"), Ken Leung ("Lost," "The Night Shift"), Isabelle Cornish and Eme Ikwuakor lead the cast. Fall, 9 p.m. Fridays.

I want to muster an enthusiasm for this. Hoping it's more LEGION, less AGENTS OF SHIELD. Initial cast and costume shots have been less than encouraging.

Quote

"SEAL Team" (fall, 9 p.m. Wednesday): Follows an elite unit of Navy SEALs as it plans and executes dangerous missions. David Boreanaz ("Bones") stars along with Max Theriot, Neil Brown Jr., A.J. Buckley, Toni Trucks and Jessica Pare; Ben Cavell ("Justified") is the creator.

SIX gave me hope this sort of show could be done well, i while i could not care less about BONES, Boreanaz was great back in his Buffy/Angel days. May give this a look.

Quote

"Black Lightning" (midseason): The network's fifth DC superhero show centers on Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams, "Hart of Dixie"), a retired superhero turned teacher who's pulled back into his former life. Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil ("The Game," "Being Mary Jane") created the show, which was initially developed at FOX before moving to The CW.

The three ARROWverse shows have mostly held my attention this season. Unfortunately they aren't setting this show in the same world, but will still at least give it a chance. I fear that the necessary fx are going to make this more irritating than cool, with contrived stuations where he cant use his powers, or extended stercthes of other people getting in danger so they can blow the budget in the last five minutes every week.

Quote

"The Gifted" (fall, 9 p.m. Monday): An "X-Men"-adjacent series from Marvel (and "X-Men" director Byran Singer) that centers on a family whose lives are upended when the kids (Natalie Alyn Lind, "The Goldbergs," and Percy Hynes White) start to display mutant powers. Amy Acker and Stephen Moyer play their parents. Matt Nix ("Burn Notice," "APB") is the showrunner, and Singer directed the pilot and is an executive producer.

Amy Acker in an X-Men show. ok, you have my attention despite the trite concept, inevitable network tv stupidity and fact that LEGION set the bar so high for this sort of thing.

Quote

“The Orville” (fall, 9 p.m. Thursday): Seth MacFarlane’s first live-action show for FOX is a sci-fi series set on a “mid-level exploratory spaceship” probing the galaxy in the 25th century. MacFarlane stars as the captain of the Orville, with Adrianne Palicki (“Friday Night Lights,” “Agents of SHIELD”) as his ex-wife and first officer. Jon Favreau directed the pilot.

No. Just no. Did POWERLESS teach them nothing?

Quote

“Ghosted” (fall, 8:30 p.m. Sunday): A true believer (Adam Scott) and a skeptic (Craig Robinson) are recruited by a government agency to investigate a wave of paranormal occurrences in Los Angeles. Ally Walker and Adeel Akhtar also star; Tom Gormican (“That Awkward Moment”) created the show.

Wow. It's like someone watched THE X FILES once.
Just once.

Quote

“Reverie” (midseason): A former hostage negotiator (Sarah Shahi, “Person of Interest”) who left the job after a personal tragedy is pulled into a new line of work: Rescuing people who have become lost in a sophisticated virtual-reality program. From “Extant” creator Mickey Fisher; also starring Dennis Haysbert, Jessica Lu, Sendhil Ramamurthy and Kathryn Morris.

Why Sarah Shahi? WHY???

Also, they SHIFTED the air-day to Friday at 9....that's the "death spot" where networks kill off shows they have zero faith in.

It's also been rumoured that there is A show on this networks' schedule that is such a complete and utter train wreck that all the suits, including the chief of the network itself, think may be the worst TV show to debut in a long, long time. That comment/rumour lines up with shifting a brand new show into that Friday at 9PM timeslot.

Thirdly...the show runner...is Scott Buck. The guy who ran the sublimely lacklustre IRON FIST season. Take from that what you will.

I have zero difficulty syncing these rumours with INHUMANS. Just a poor choice of Marvel property to try to develop as a tv show. The few times the characters have been interesting its been as part of something much larger in the comic MU. Even AoS had a hard time. And all this notwistanding Marvels 'fued' with Sony and sad attempts to make the Inhumans into the XMen.

That's all kinda sad but not surprising. I've always liked Ken Leung for some reason and really wish he'd have a breakout role.

Ken Leung is a GREAT actor. I loved him on LOST.

Also, does anyone know if he's (Admiral Statura) got an amped up part in THE LAST JEDI? I've heard he does, but only time will tell.

And the last few seasons of Dexter. I've not seen them, but I've heard... terrible things.

Plus, just the basic premise is fucking bollocks. He's turned Inhumans into a romcom by the sounds of it.

Finished Season 2 Ep 3 last night.

I think the situation in "Miracle" could be very interesting.

And im finding it difficult to care about Tom and Laurie's new storyline. I enjoyed the episode, but i'm curious where they go with the GR.

Not going into the Preacher thread since it's spolerific but I'm halfway through the season.

I really like this show but there's something off about it. I think it's how disjointed the storylines feel, like it's building towards something else than what I expect. I think it's because I don't remember the stuff in the show at all. But then again I don't remember much about the comics anyway. Anyway I like how weird the show is. It feels like a dirtier version of Twin Peaks. Strange people, strange places, strange stories.

What ever I just watched through episode 6 and it was great. Those first 10 minutes before the late title card makes the whole season worth it.

Spoiler

I also love the "Saint of Killers" origin story they are telling in small parts. I assume that next episode we get to see what happens when the old guy snaps. I imagine it's going to be an orgy of violence.

They canceled Sense8.

I'm with you, BK. The more I think about it the madder I am about Sense8. I haven't watched season 2 yet (aside from the New Year's ep, which was great), but there's something about this show that just feels vital, and its cancellation is just one more bit of rotten, hope-extinguishing news in an awful year. It's not even my favorite show, but it feels like the embodiment of something better that TV should strive for. I hate to oversell any show's importance in the grand scheme of things, but Sense8 is right up there with like All In the Family, Good Times, The Cosby Show (before the retroactive taint), Roseanne, etc. Like it feels right up there with Ellen coming out...its existence is a positive for the world at large. And the fact that it's the Wachowskis' most risky AND most rewarding writing ever just makes its loss sting that much more.

Add to that Netfilx backtracking on net neutrality (https://bgr.com/2017...ality-comments/) and its apparent desire to become more like a network instead of less like one, and it's all kinda losing its luster.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Been binge watching Deadwood season 1.

You can sort of feel this is an older show but damn is it entertaining. There's an art to gratuitous swear words and this show seems to revel in it. I just watched a scene with Ian McShane having a business conversation with a dope selling china man that mostly consisted of shouting "COCKSUCKER" at one another, while making wild gesticulations. It's reminiscent of that "fuck fuck fuck" scene from the Wire.

I feel like Al the whore house owner steals the show. Everything that doesn't revolve around the whore house and Al's scheme's just sort of feels like a distraction. McShane is a charismatic son of bitch.

I also like how the show sort of tries to show how civilization and order slowly comes to the "Wild west". In many ways Deadwood and the characters that inhabit it remind me of Steven Erikson's writing. The characters are often times much smarter or brilliant in their ignorance, than you would expect.

I especially love Calamity Jane. I wonder if the actor won some kind of Emmy nomination for her performance.

Just started the second season of Deadwood. I just watched the funniest showdown between The Sherif and Ian McShane. A fist fight over an insult, turned into a gun fight and then the Sherif's wife arrives... Hell of a season opener.

He already appears in middle of Season 1. His character as the rival saloon owner has taken a pretty dark turn. I thought he was interesting in the first season as a mirror to Ian McShane's business but now he seems like more of just a covetous, paranoid sociopath.

Watched a couple episodes of Into the Badlands. This is a strange show. I haven't watched a show like this since the 90s, maybe early 00s. This is the TV equivalent of a B-movie. The production budget is higher than Xena: The Warrior Princess but the whole thing is pretty dumb.

Still, I have a feeling if I was reading this as the first entry into a fantasy series, this might actually be pretty good. As is, the show seems too limited in what it shows, compared to what it pretends to be.

Doesn't help that I find every single character poorly written and the acting utterly unmemorable.

Daniel Wu is AWESOME. I shall brook no words to the contrary.

Never heard of him before but he's a good pick for a marshal arts series. I guess the show suffers a bit greatly in my eyes coming straight from finishing Season 2 of Deadwood, which is crammed full of great performances.
