THE BLACK COMPANY IS BEING ADAPTED FOR TV, AND ELIZA DUSHKU IS GOING TO BE THE LADY (and apparently she is a fan of the books).

https://deadline.com...bal-1202076367/

Suggestions for who should play Croaker?

Kevin McKidd is probably the best "get" that could be done. Needs someone who's able to be believed as a battlefield medic AND able to pull off the flights of fancy that give rise to the secret dreams of The Lady.

Maybe they could go left field and get someone like Pedro Pascal. He'd rule as Croaker.

If they're going w The Dush for Lady I suspect they're going to slant younger than McKidd for Croaker.
That quote could not have been more fed to her if it was attached to a picture of her doing air quotes with her fingers.

Also, this is a horrible idea.

They also mentioned Port of Shadows releasing in 2018 - certainly possible if they are trying to publish it to coincide with the hype for the series. I hope so anyway. The tv show might suck but at least we'll get a good read out of it.
I'm on board the horrible idea train.

The thing about acting is that a mid thirties lady almost always gets paired up with a mid forties or even approaching fifty guy. It sucks.

I would love a younger, less well known person as Croaker. But will the producers hang their money on a lesser known getting a big break?

All true about the industry, but McKidd is only 7 years older than Dushku, and in the context of the story that's not really a crazy gulf.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Adding in that it's Dushku's production company (whose only claim to fame thus far is DOLLHOUSE...seven years ago) mingled with David Goyer's (which for TV is very hit and miss)...which should set alarm bells at least jangling, if not ringing outright.

And Abyss is right about the quote...no WAY Dushku said that on her own. It's literally Marketing-Speak 101.

I can list off at least fifteen shows currently running [or recent] where this is not the case. I get that this may have been the case once upon a time, but perpetuation that this is the "norm" in TV Hollywood in 2017 is quite offbase.

Here's my list (bearing in mind average couple age differences in real life is usually 3-4 years anyways) some of which even skew the other way with the female actor older than the male actor. I'm also going to skew up a bit in some cases to show that the difference stays small as actors age too:

CONTINUUM - Rachel Nichols 37, Victor Webster 44 (7 years)
AoS: Adrienne Palicki 33, Nick Blood 35 (2 years)
DAREDEVIL: Charlie Cox 34, Deborah Ann Woll 32 (2 years)
JESSICA JONES: Krysten Ritter 35, Mike Coulter 40, (5 years)
GREY'S ANATOMY: Ellen Pompeo 47, Patrick Dempsey 51 (4 years)
STRANGER THINGS: Wynona Ryder 45, David Harbor 42 (3 years)
VIKINGS: Travis Fimmel 37, Kathryn Winnick 39, Alyssa Sutherland 34 (2 years for Trav and Kat, and 4 years between him and Alyssa)
The LAST KINGDOM: Alexander Dreymon 34, Emily Cox 32
LUTHER: Idris Elba 44, Indira Varma 43 (1 year)
THE AMERICANS: Keri Russel 41, Matthew Rhys 42 (1 year)
THE WALKING DEAD: Andrew Lincoln 43, Sarah Wayne-Callies 39, Danai Gurira 39 (4 years)
ONCE UPON A TIME: Ginnifer Goodwin 38, Josh Dallas 38 (no difference)
THE 100: Paige Turco 51, Henry Ian Cusack 50 (1 year)
BLINDSPOT: Sullivan Stapleton 39, Jamie Alexander 33 (5 years)
THE BLACKLIST: Megan Boone 33, Ryan Eggold is 32 (1 year)

These numbers get even more muddied and actively balanced between the genders if the whole show is trended younger, like FLASH, ARROW, RIVERDALE, or the like. A current example is in RIVERDALE where all three lead females who show romantic interest in Archie (KJ Apa) are older than him by between 1 to 3 years.

It might happen...but it doesn't happen in any kind of numbers to make a claim like "always" when the word should be "occasionally".

This is TV not a film. They don't need all big names...and they already have one big name in Dushku...everyone else could be unknowns and this would still fly from a marketing perspective, including Croaker. You know any of the actors on THE EXPANSE other than Thomas Jane when it started?

Is The Dush even a 'name' anymore? ... i don't think she's been TV A-List since Dollhouse tanked.

BLACK COMPANY is just one of those properties that will only translate well to tv if they eject most of the content and keep only the most basic concepts. I'm certain some enterprising producer with a double-degree in marketing made a wild pitch for this to be the next GAME OF THRONES, but no, it's just not.

...all that aside tho, i could see her killing it as Lady.

A fair point, and an accurate one as well. Though, I think she has enough Cred from her BUFFY days to fly as a "known" name when peddling the show to the audience.

I suspect the selling point for DOLLHOUSE was Joss working with a key BUFFY cast member (and to be clear she was awesome in Buffy... hell, she was even awesome, at times, on Dollhouse, it was just that the show as such a trainwreck of a bad idea done bad. But look at her imdb since Dollhouse and it seems like her major source of income has been doing SheHulk's voice on AGENTS OF SMASH. Not sure any of that gives her major cred for BLACK COMPANY, not that it really matters. Someone elseforum pointed out that if she played Lady

Spoiler

so there's that.

Tanking in ratings, pulled twice for repeats. All but dead.

QT you're right that TV is a whole lot better than film in this regard. There are of course other indignities, like being a cast member on The Walking Dead, but those are spread fairly evenhandedly.

Film mind you, still has a way to go in this regard. But that's a different argument.

Starts this Sunday. I'll probably let it run for a few episodes, keep my ear to the hype train. Then give it a go if it seems worthy.
