Ok,I was 20 years old when I read about Itkovian's death but I cried like a little baby. And since then when I think about his fate I feel sad, cause I believe he deserves much better.Do you think he will carry this burden forever?Maybe something can happen and he will not be in death as he was in life?I hope some Ascendant,God,genius, whatever, does something about it...and then we can all put in our playlists the song from Gladiator "now we are free" and smile :D
Oh well...

do you think that his death is the sadest part in the series or not?I know I do..

ps:sorry for my english...

The two moments that made me cry in the series were Coltaine's death and Itkovian's. Personally, Itkovian's is probably the more sad, because I preferred him as a character.

It was an absolutely awesome scene, I loved the Grey Swords in general, and this was a fitting end to their story (I know they reformed again afterwards, but it wasn't really the same group).

I thought so, thanks.

Unfortunately, everyone assumes I enjoyed 300 when I tell them where it came from :D

I'm going to assume he moonwalked through it.

@Raraku: That's my unsigned rep, incidentally. Damn accidentally-hit Enter button.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

i think Brukhalians death is sadest part of series because he and his men willingly gone to their death to prove something.

Oh yeah that was another really grief ridden moment
He tells his 2nd in command that without their deaths there would be no betrayal
And then when the 2nd in command sobbingly asks him how will justice be done to Rath Fener, Brukalian says it will be done by Itkovians hand
That was one of the most beautiful but hard things i had ever read (sob)

It was a really epic scene, but if it wasn't for their zealous conviction in their chain of command, all those soldiers wouldn't have had to die. I mean, come on, sacrificing the Mortal Sword of Fener and... 400? soldiers, to prove a point was a bit extreme.

Awesome but stupid.

Itkovian is the saddest moment of the series, Icarium's plight in DHG is also saddening.

One of the best characters and scenes in the whole series.

Personally I found Baudin's death one of the saddest. Whiskey Jack's death pissed me off, I so didn't want him to die, him and the rest of the bridge burners. Although does it count as "death" if one ascends?

Dead or Ascended matter not. WhiskeyJack was permanently removed from the series by force using a few feet of cold steel.

Thats what counts.

Itkovian wasn't a character that gripped me, niether did the Greyswords at first. However after their sacrafice and Itkovian lets lose his signature line that this thread is named after, I couldnt help but love the guy. The death will always be one of THEE saddest deaths in fantasy. No nobler cause has anyone died for that I've read about, nor has anyone accepted such a fate so willingly.

The saddest part of Itkovians death imho is the fact that no matter where he went or who was there he always ended up welcomed due to his quiet nature and calm capability. Kind of like that cool silent uncle you had, who could fix stuff with two twists of a screwdriver and a slight nod. Itkovian was one of the very few characters in the MBoTF that makes friends in the first place, WJ made ONE friend, Paran? nope, Fiddler? loses 'em mainly, Tavore? Big No there.
The scene where Itkovian shows compassion for Rath Fener after he betrayed Burukhalian is intense as well and shows us the depth of this wonderful characters' compassion and humanity. Then, he lets the bad guy turn into a puddle of goo. That's why I never wanted to stop reading about him.

Im with OP, the parts in the last 100 pages with Itkovian, Whiskeyjack, and the Pannion's sister all had me bawling like a little girl. Its been a long time since I've read a book that could do that. MoI was just incredible.

Cry:
-WJ dying. Not so much Itkovian though, because his was a choice well in character, and really was a triumph of his personal ethics.
-Coltaine. So close. 'nuff said.

Spoiler

I cried at Itkovians death as well. Seemed very appropriate for the character, but so damn sad :( His shrine is just awesome though.

I managed not to hear about WJs death before I finished this one, so it shocked me a fair bit, didn't want him to die either, agreat character!
