Paran is going to show up in this novel Im assuming. My question would be will he be back flying solo or still leading Onearm's old host? are those soldiers loyal to laseen or will they flee with Tavore? if they are loyal will they end up fighting what is left of the 14th? does paran even care about loyalty to laseen?

ok that was a bunch of questions.

And you're expecting us to answer them? We can only guess after all.

Their communications with the empire have been severed so Lazeen thinks they're lost or renegade. I'm guessing the Claw either went native or were killed. So unless Paran or a random deck reader in the army choses to inform the soldiers on the state of the empire, they won't even know about the 14th or the empires internal problems. Their Malazan soldiers, loyal to the empire, if not to the empress.

I believe something in BH suggests that they were heading for Quon Tali or another different continent. So Parans Host will, probably, not show up in Toll the Hounds. Paran might but the army is unlikely... unless the Master uses some of his mojo to move them.

***Spoiler Alert***

Just yesterday I gazed into my crystal ball and made a big pattern with my Deck of Dragons and it told me that Paran took the whole Host to Nathilog and thus they will all appear there at the beginning of the book. As soon as he gets there T'morol happens to tell him about the Felisin-Tavore thingy, and he gets super pissed off and ordered the Host to attack the Bonehunters. It's so convenient, you see, because since the 14th/Bonehunters are outlawed by Laseen, the Host felt no compunction about attacking them. So the Host spends all of TtH on a Meckros city slowly making it's way to Lether, because otherwise the 14th wouldn't show up in TtH. When they meet up in the last chapter before the epilogue, everyone dies.

Haha. No.

But I think there will be some awesome Tavore-Paran tag team action. With armies in full.

Are the wickan plains on Quon Tali? What about the twin girls of Karsa's brood?

If they are then that story line seems to come in contact with where Paran's army is going. Now what does Quon Tali have that is so important that it needs the master of the deck and an army to fix is beyond me.

Sincerely

I think Paran does remain loyal to Laseen to a small degree. The is based on the fact that when he is considering whether he should take control of the Host he does think something along the lines of, "If Laseen wants her army back I'll give it to her." Or am I remembering that completely wrong.

Whether that would last past Paran finding out that Laseen tried to have his sister killed, I don't know. Also, I think the host are loyal to Paran a little more than the Empirea and much more than to Laseen.
Flying Monkeys definitely win.

The Wickan Plains are on Quon Tali, yes. But Karsa's daughters are on the Laederon Plateau on Genabackis, so not sure what the two questions have to do with each other.

As far as I know, it wasn't mentioned where Paran's Host was going, just that they were leaving Seven Cities never to return...but he was heading to Aren and leaving Seven Cities from there. But then, both Quon Tali and Genabackis are east of Aren. My complete guess is that the army is going to Genabackis. Any book with 'Hounds' in the title is going to involve Paran. That's what you call scientific reasoning :D

Well I have no quote or anything, but I was pretty darn sure it said something like Paran going to Quon Tali.

Hmm...unless maybe I just heard (err...read whatever) it hear so much. But still Quon Tali is south of Aren, not really east. Okay I guess some of it is but still I think south before east.

In my humble opinion I think Paran is going to Quon Tali, and will be the one who ends up saving/helping the wickans. Perhaps he will also solve a few other problems in the heart of the empire like the whole Laseen losing control bit. Oh! oh! Maybe he takes her and the two douchebags DOWN! And Paran becomes the new emperor! :D

Oh I was just seeing what other parts of the story are also taking place last we saw Paran was headed. I read on the boards that he is on his way to Quon Tali, and although I recognize that Quon Tali is a stop over for a trip to Genabackis I do not remember reading if Paran had any plans on going that way. Although it could have something to do with Hood request of him. Maybe Hood's request has him going for the soul of Coltaine? Hood might not like the fact that some wickan souls are beyond him. That is of course idle speculation.

Also I thought that the Teblor Tribes are from Quon Tali, but you are saying that they are from Genebackis? I got to read house of chains again before this book comes along. Can you imagine two teblor women in Darujhistan? Poor Murilio (thats the thief's name from Kruppe's/Cutter's troop right) doesn't stand a chance. My idea was that they would meet up with Paran on the way to Genebackis while he was on the Quon Tali Plains.

I could see him eventually merging his Host with the 14th.

Thinking back on the conversaton between (I think) The Destriant of the Perish and the Adjunct about the 14th not being enough. At some point I'm sure they'll need to be enough and I'd imagine that Paran and the host would make it almost so...the Letharii wouldn't add much (i'd imagine)

So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

your thinking of the fenn, a less pure blooded version of the tartheno thelomen toblakai, bellurdan, nightchills companion, was fenn iirc

i think parans next move will be something completely out of the box, perhaps to quon tali, but not in the way we might think. im thinking warrens. he's the master of the deck. if anyone can be confident moving an army through the warrens its ganoes paran. then of course theres hoods request...

a very, VERY old interview about RotCG suggested that Paran and his Host may make an appearance--that's in Quon Tali.

As for Karsa's girls, wouldn't be surprised if they get caught by the Nathii, then escape and lead some sort of rebellion somewhere...

Haha. :D But yeah as Sinisdar Toste says the Teblor are from Genabackis. They are a very isolated people who have spent what I think is thousands of years bringing the purify-ing their blood (a lot of inbreeding I guess) Thanks to Icarium's instructions after seeing how thin their TTT blood was becoming. Apperantly at one point the TTT's had a fairly powerful and wide-spread civilization that spread around the entire world (well basically). That is why there are scattered tribes and decendants of them all around the Malaz world now. Like the Fenn, Tarthenal (I'm pretty sure I massacred that name but whatever) the Teblor, etc.

Oh and yeah Murillio is from their little posse, but I can't remember if he was actually a theif or not...?

nope.
Cutter/Crokus was the thief
Murillio was a nobleman and the "ladies man" of the group, always off chasing some tail and getting inside info for the rest of them

Paran's gonna have to be veeeeeeeery careful, wherever he is. If he's decided to wage war on the Empress, then his newfound soldiers might not take kindly to their inevitable outlawry...

It's strange everyone seems to be of the impression that Tavore and Paran are now a threat to the empire? Why?

None of them are old guard. None of them wants to sit on the throne. SO why would they want to remove her? The only real crime I can think of her doing at the moment is the pogrom of the Wickans.

While it's a dirty move, Paran and Tavore are schooled in imperial tactics and the politics of the empress. They can both see that the empress is funneling the subjects displeasures and the aristocracies greed towards the wickans and away from the throne.

Who says they want to remove her? Maybe they just want this Empire fine-tuned.

Apt is completely right, why would Tavore and Paran want to go against the empire?

I wonder what Paran is going to do with the Host. He's the Master of the Deck, he doesn't need the burden of an army. He's going to be worrying about their survival rather than mastering the pantheon. I hope he passes the control of the Army over to someone else, Captain Kindly perhaps :D

I think Paran will become a patron of soldiers...

I been thinking, a master of the deck needs a power base EG the azath needed worshippers and blood to flood him with power. Paran needs something similar and I think the position of general is just one step on the ladder to becoming the God of soldiers.

Note: this is not a god of war. I think there is a significant division between these two positions and I feel The deck of dragons may accomodate for something like the patron of soldiery...My biggest hint? The bridgeburner spirits all manifest under parans power, they form his bridge or something to that effect and I think the bridge burners ARE a representation of soldiery and the principles of the proffession.

The potential of such a deity are IMMENSE...
